Over 17,000 islands make up the Indonesian archipelago. But for a lot of travellers, there’s only one that really matters; Bali. A volcano-dotted, beach-fringed paradise that’s serene and sensational by turns, from the green slopes of Mt Batur to the Bintang bodegas on Seminyak’s main party strip.

For us though, Bali tours are all about the little treasures. An out-of-the-way village stay at Sidemen, reef-diving the impossibly blue waters off Lovina, soaking up some tranquility in the Banja hot springs, or sipping lime-spiked smoothies in Ubud’s organic cafes. As always, when it comes to paradise, the hardest bit is choosing what to do first.

Located in Central Java, discover Borobudur, or Barabudur, which is a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple in Magelang. It is the world’s largest Buddhist temple, and also one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world.

Temples to Volcanoes

Java is one of the largest and most populous islands in the world, so what better way to explore it than on a week-long overland adventure from its cultural heartlands to the rugged east.

Day 1: Arrive Yogyakarta

Transfer from the airport to your hotel. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and then spend the afternoon creating your own batik.

Day 2: Yogyakarta

This morning explore the city visiting the Sultan’s Palace and Taman Sari before continuing the tour in a local becak (similar to a cyclo or trishaw). This afternoon visit the ancient Hindu temples at Prambanan.

Day 3: Yogyakarta - Borobudur - Yogayakarta

Depart this morning for the drive to one of the highlights of your trip, Borobudur. Explore this massive Buddhist temple - the largest in the world - and discover the incredible history behind its construction. Comprised of thousands of volcanic and river stone blocks, the temple was assembled entirely by human labour and took more than 75 years to complete. These days, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is still visible in its full glory- with magnificent carvings and an unusual, yet surprisingly beautiful bulk structure.

Day 4: Yogyakarta - Jombang - Mount Bromo

A very early departure today for the scenic train ride to Jombang in East Java. Travelling by train in Java is a wonderful way to meet local people and is also the best way to enjoy the volcanic landscapes of central and east Java. On arrival at Jombang you will be met and transferred to your hotel located on the edge of Tengger Caldera. En route visit the archaeological museum and the temples of Candi Bajang Ratu and Candi Tikus at Trowulan. After lunch, proceed to Mount Bromo passing by the coastal town of Pasuruan, which is located on the northeast coast of Java, before continuing by a picturesque mountain road to one of the entrances of the Bromo-Tengger National Park.

Day 5: Mount Bromo - Jember - Kalibaru

Rise early for a sunrise tour of Mount Bromo, travelling by 4WD jeep to a viewing spot with stunning views of the volcano and its surrounds. Follow this with a 20 minute ride on horseback that will take you to a set of stairs which lead to the rim of the still-active crater. Continue the long road journey to Kalibaru.

Day 6: Kalibaru - Mount Ijen

Explore the coffee and spice plantations of the remote area of Kalibaru. Here you will experience authentic rural Indonesian life. Travel on to Ijen and settle in to your hotel nestled amid rice fields and surrounded by jungle and woodlands with Mount Ijen looming in the distance.

Day 7: Mount Ijen - Lovina Beach (Bali)

Cap off this journey with an early start for an excursion to magnificent Mount Ijen, a large crater lake surrounded by sulphur mines. Once you reach the top of the volcano, spend some time enjoying the views of the 200 metre deep crater. Descend the mountain and travel by ferry to the island of Bali where your journey ends.
