Day 1: Arrive Beijing

Welcome to Beijing. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and settle in before meeting your Travel Director for a Welcome Reception drink and local appetisers.

Day 2: Beijing Sightseeing

Begin your visit to this great capital city by exploring one of the world's largest public areas, Tiananmen Square, home to the National Museum of China, the mausoleum of Mao Zedong and the Great Monument to the People's Heroes. Pass through the south gate to the magnificent Forbidden City, a 180 acre complex of courtyards, palaces, pavilions and gardens. It served as the imperial palace for emperors and their households for more than 500 years and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. After lunch continue to another UNESCO Heritage site - the stunning Temple of Heaven, visited by the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prayer to heaven. This evening, enjoy a succulent Peking Duck Regional Meal - a must during any visit to Beijing.

Day 3: Beijing and the Great Wall

Travel outside the city and look down upon the Chinese countryside from your perch on top of the Great Wall, which is actually a collection of fortifications built and rebuilt from the 5th century B.C. to the 16th century, to defend against nomadic invaders like the Mongols. Walk the Sacred Way to the remnants of the Ming Tombs, the once-lavish burial chambers of 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty. Both places are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Day 4: Free Time - Beijing Sightseeing

Spend the morning at leisure, before embarking on a unique tour by rickshaw around the ancient alleyways of the courtyard Hutong residences. Stop at the home of a local family for a delicious Be My Guest lunch of traditional Chinese cuisine followed by a visit to a charming tea house, where a Local Specialist prepares and serves tea, while explaining the historic tea making ritual. This afternoon indulge in a relaxing foot massage, a Cultural Insight, at the Foot Reflexology Centre.

Day 5: Beijing – Xi’an

This morning fly to the city of Xi'an. Later visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, one of the city's most distinctive and outstanding landmarks and one of the Silk Road UNESCO listed sites.

Day 6: Xi’an Sightseeing

During term-time, meet the children and teachers at a local primary school. Perhaps learn a few words of Chinese from the kids who in turn will be happy to practice their English. Afterwards, visit the legendary army of Terracotta Warriors and Horses in Emperor Qin Shi Huang's subterranean tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For lunch enjoy a delicious meal of traditional Chinese noodles and later continue with a visit to a Jade factory.

Day 7: Xi’an – Shanghai

This morning your choice of activities gives you the chance to participate in a T'ai Chi Class, with a skilled Local Specialist, or take a cycle tour around part of the ancient City Wall of Xi'an. Continue on to a local restaurant for a Cultural Insight; watch a demonstration in the art of making dumplings, and afterwards enjoy sampling these for lunch. There are 21 different kinds of dumplings with a variety of fillings and different ways of cooking them. Later, transfer to the airport for your flight to Shanghai. This evening take a relaxing cruise along the Huangpu River and admire Shanghai's illuminated skyline; a great introduction to the city.

Day 8: Shanghai Sightseeing

With a Local Specialist, take a stroll along Shanghai's famous 'Bund', the city's renowned waterfront, lined with former colonial buildings and modern sky-scrapers. Learn how marshland was turned into one of the most important trading hubs in the modern world. Continue to Old Shanghai, a little known treasure trove of winding streets and vibrant markets. Despite the rapid pace of development in the rest of the city, the established customs and lifestyle of this area have remained relatively unaltered. Enjoy some free time for lunch and shopping in the Old Town before continuing to visit a silk museum and shop. This evening enjoy a performance by the world-renowned Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe.

Day 9: Shanghai Free Time

Today is yours to explore Shanghai further, do some last minute shopping or take an Optional Experience to Zhujiajiao, an ancient water town founded more than 1,700 years ago. In its heyday, Zhujiajiao was a bustling market town well known throughout the country. Today, old historical buildings such as rice shops, banks, spice stores and even a Qing Dynasty post office can still be found when strolling down the ancient streets and exploring the many bridges that crisscross its canals. In the afternoon enjoy some free time back in Shanghai before joining your travel companions for a Farewell Dinner.

Day 10: Depart Shanghai

After breakfast transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Welcome to the bustling, cosmopolitan city of Shanghai. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel where the remainder of your day is free to relax and explore the city.

Day 2: Shanghai

Once dubbed the 'Paris of the Orient', Shanghai still retains much of the sophistication and ebullience of yesteryear. Today's sightseeing tour features the famous Yu Yuan Garden, the atmospheric old town and the stunning Jade Buddha Temple. The afternoon is free for you to explore 'The Bund' and Nanjing Road at your leisure. Later this evening, enjoy an exciting Acrobatics Show.

Day 3: Shanghai - Tongli - Suzhou

This morning, visit the splendid Shanghai Museum, which houses thousands of exquisite Chinese archaeological and artistic exhibits. After lunch drive to Tongli, a 1000-year-old 'water-town', and experience the life of local people living along the canals, before continuing on to Suzhou. Tonight, dancers, folk singers and musicians with classical Chinese instruments will entertain you in Suzhou's Garden of the Master of the Nets.

Day 4: Suzhou - Beijing

Suzhou is famed for its silk industry. The ancient canals and bridges here earned it the name `Venice of the East'. Your exploration of Suzhou begins with a visit to Tiger Hill, on the summit of which stands the Pagoda of Yunyan. Visit the Lingering Garden before taking a short cruise along the Grand Canal. After lunch visit a Silk Factory, then enjoy a Rickshaw Ride along the canal banks. This evening, fly to Beijing.

Day 5: Beijing

Beijing holds many wonders for the visitor. Highlights include the vast Tiananmen Square, home to the imposing city museum, and the magnificent Forbidden City, the palace complex that was home to successive Emperors for over 500 years. The glorious Summer Palace will enthrall you with its gardens and landscapes.

Day 6: Beijing - Great Wall Of China

Drive to Mutianyu to visit the legendary Great Wall Of China, which crosses forested mountain tops and stretches approximately 6,000 kilometres across China's barren northern terrain. One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Wall is a spectacular sight you'll be sure never to forget. Later, visit the Jade Museum where you can purchase pieces of this precious stone. Your day ends with a traditional Peking Duck Dinner.

Day 7: Beijing - Yichang - Yangtze River

After a morning visit to Beijing's Temple Of Heaven, fly to Yichang, where you will board your ship for an exciting four-night Yangtze River Cruise.

Day 8: Yangtze River

Set sail this morning and watch dramatic vistas unfold before you as your ship passes through the serenely beautiful Xiling Gorge. After a shore excursion to the incredible Three Gorges Dam, you'll sail through the Three Gorges Dam five-stage ship lock.

Day 9: Yangtze River

Today, experience the swift, crystal waters of the Shennong Stream, a Yangtze tributary. Travel through fairytale landscapes that are unlike anywhere else in the world. Later you will pass through Wu Gorge and Qutang Gorge.

Day 10: Yangtze River

Continue your cruise today and visit Fengdu Ghost City, said to be inhabited by immortals from China's underworld, and bursting with ancient shrines and temples dedicated to these gods.

Day 11: Yangtze River - Chongqing - Xi'An

Disembark your cruise in Chongqing and enjoy a short city tour and a visit to the City Zoo, which is home to some of China's famous giant pandas. Later, continue to the airport for your flight to Xi'an.

Day 12: Xi'An

Marvel at the remarkable Terracotta Warriors, built around 250 BC to guard an Imperial Tomb and comprising thousands of full-size, hand-carved clay soldiers, chariots and horses. Next, stroll along the ancient City Wall and visit the Xi'an Art Ceramics And Lacquer Exhibition Centre. In the evening, enjoy dinner at the Tang Era Music And Dance Show.

Day 13: Xi'An - Guilin

A morning visit to Xi'an's Wild Goose Pagoda, a revered Buddhist pagoda built around 600 AD, is followed by your flight to Guilin.

Day 14: Guilin - Yangshuo

Cruise the picturesque Li River which snakes through limestone pinnacles and rice fields to Yangshuo.

Day 15: Yangshuo - Guilin

Discover the beautiful countryside around Yangshuo and enjoy an afternoon is at leisure before returning to Guilin in the evening.

Day 16: Guilin

Visit the South China Pearl Museum and Reed Flute Cave, a vast cavern pitted with stalagmites and stalactites, named after the nearby reeds that were once used to make flutes. Your tour ends today with a transfer to the airport.

Day 2: Beijing

Your sightseeing begins today with a tour of Tiananmen Square. Enlarged to four times its original size in the 1950s, Tiananmen is the world’s largest city square. After the tour, head to the World Heritage-listed Forbidden City, the largest surviving palace complex on earth. Located within the Imperial City of Beijing, the Forbidden City was home to 24 Chinese emperors between 1420 and 1924. Entrance to the city was once at the sole discretion of the emperor, but today visitors are able to access this extraordinarily preserved site. Enjoy dinner at leisure.

Freedom of Choice Sightseeing: Following dinner, you may choose to attend a fascinating Peking Opera show at Qianmen Liyuan Theatre, watch an exhilarating Kung Fu Show at the Red Theatre, or explore Silk Alley market.

Day 3: Beijing, Great Wall of China

Today, set out for the Great Wall of China, which winds its way from the Yellow Sea up into the Gobi Desert for more than 6,000 kilometres. Travel back to Beijing this evening and indulge in an authentic Peking Duck banquet served with all the traditional accompaniments.

Day 4: Beijing - Yichang - Embark Ship

After the morning at leisure, transfer to the airport and fly to Yichang. On arrival, transfer to your luxury river ship and settle in for your cruise along the Yangtze River.
Cruise: Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer, 4 nights

Day 5: Xiling Gorge - Three Gorges Dam

Cruise along the Yangtze River through China’s most picturesque area, the spectacular Three Gorges region. Pass through the longest of the Three Gorges, Xiling Gorge, cruising through Yellow Ox Gorge and under Huangling Temple, built around 770 BC – 476 BC and set amid groves of orange and pomelo trees. Later this afternoon, arrive at the Three Gorges Dam and take a tour of the world’s largest engineering project. After the Captain’s Welcome Reception this evening, enjoy a special Welcome Dinner.

Day 6: Shennong Stream - Wu Gorge - Qutang Gorge

Disembark your ship at Badong and transfer by ferry to a traditional Chinese sampan (longboat). As you cruise on this longboat, poled by a local Tujia boatman, you’re able to absorb the serenity of the river and take in the rich surrounding forest and towering rock formations. After lunch back on board, continue to the tranquil and spectacular Wu Gorge. Noted for its sheer peaks and towering cliff faces, the gorge is surrounded by the Wu Mountains and is the second of the Three Gorges system. Later, your ship will graciously glide between the majestic Chijia Mountain and Baiyan Mountain to enter Qutang Gorge, the shortest, narrowest and most dramatic of the Three Gorges. Also considered the most beautiful, the two peaks of Qutang Gorge rise up alongside the Yangtze River some 1,300 metres. As you cruise past the south bank, look out for the ancient inscriptions that are engraved into the white chalk cliff faces. In the afternoon, there is the opportunity to attend a fun hands-on arts and crafts demonstration on board. This evening, you can indulge in a delicious dinner with your fellow guests and APT Tour Director.

Day 7: Fengdu or Relocation Tour

Rise early to participate in a tai chi class atop the ship’s Observation Deck for a relaxing start to your day. Following breakfast, disembark for a tour of Fengdu, a graceful little ‘Ghost City’ that lies in the foothills of the mountains by the river. Fengdu is noted for its bustling markets and the many Buddha and Tao temples gathered on Ming Mountain. Alternatively, you may choose to take a ‘Relocation Tour’, which will give you an insight into the impact of the Three Gorges Dam project on local farming communities and the surrounding area. In the afternoon, choose from a range of activities. Perhaps attend a Chinese brush painting and calligraphy demonstration, learn how to play the ancient game of Mahjong, learn a few words of Mandarin, or participate in a dumpling making session run by the ship’s talented chef. In the evening, enjoy the Emperor’s Farewell Dinner, a Chinese banquet feast.

Day 8: Chongqing - Xi'an

Disembark your ship for the final time in Chongqing this morning. A strategic port since ancient times, Chongqing was established in the 11th century and has a dramatic history, having played a key role in World War II due to its mountainous landscape. Head to the Chongqing Zoo, where more than 200 varieties of wild and rare animals are on display, including the endangered Giant Pandas. This beautiful creature is fast replacing the dragon as China’s emblem and has been kept in zoos since the early Han Dynasty – over two thousand years ago. Later, visit a local restaurant for a hotpot lunch before transferring to the airport for your flight to Xi’an.

Day 9: Xi’an, Terracotta Army

Today you will discover the attractions of Xi’an, one of the oldest cities in China with more than 3,000 years of history. The city was one of China’s Four Great Capitals and is the eastern point of the famous Silk Road. Visit the ancient city wall, one of the largest military defensive systems in the world, constructed in the 14th century during the early Ming Dynasty. Afterwards, travel to a clay factory where impressive terracotta soldiers are still made today. Spend the afternoon at the Museum of Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses and the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum. Here lie the three excavation pits where the collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the warriors of Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor of China, were first unearthed by farmers in 1974. Watch a panoramic movie telling the story of the warriors and enjoy time to visit the three excavation pits where over 8,000 terracotta soldiers, horses, chariots and weapons are arranged in vast columns.

Freedom of Choice Sightseeing: This evening, enjoy a Tang Dynasty cultural performance and feast on a local dumpling dinner. Alternatively, you may like to embark on a tour of the Muslim Quarter, followed by dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 10: Xi’an - Shanghai

Transfer to the airport and fly to Shanghai. On arrival, ride the high-speed Maglev train and watch the kilometres race towards an exhilarating 300 kilometres. Once predominantly a fishing and textiles town, rapid growth has seen Shanghai transform into a globally significant metropolis. Check in to your hotel overlooking the Huangpu River. Beyond the crisp cool veneer, Shanghai's architectural heritage is like nowhere else. From Jesuit cathedrals, Jewish synagogues and Buddhist temples to home-grown lòngtáng laneways and shíkùmén housing, lift the lid to a treasure chest of architectural style with time at leisure.

Day 11: Shanghai

This morning, be joined by a local guide for an orientation tour through downtown Shanghai. Stop at the Oriental Pearl Tower and take an elevator to the viewing deck, where you will delight in panoramic views of the city. Standing at 468 metres high, it is one of the city’s tallest buildings and is brightly lit in different LED sequences at night. After lunch visit an authentic local silk factory for an insight into the history of Chinese silk manufacturing. This evening, after dinner at your leisure, enjoy premium seating at a thrilling acrobatic show.

Day 12: Shanghai

Freedom of Choice Sightseeing: Choose your activity this morning. Perhaps cruise the Huangpu River through the heart of the city, then explore Yu Garden and enjoy a traditional Chinese tea ceremony. Regarded as one of the most lavish gardens in China, Yu Garden was built over a period of 20 years by Pan Yunduan who wanted to impress his father, a high-ranking official in the Ming Dynasty. Following your tour, sit down to a dim sum lunch. Alternatively you may prefer to take part in a hands-on cooking class, during which you will learn how to make Shanghai dumplings. Your final option is a full day excursion to Jinxi, an ancient water town. Although only an hour from bustling Shanghai, Jinxi is worlds away in pace and serenity. Less developed than other nearby water towns and largely untouched by tourism, Jinxi’s romantic charm is best appreciated during a guided walking tour. Wandering through the covered corridors along the Jinxi River, you’ll discover ancient bridges arching over the town’s many water alleys. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and time at leisure before returning to the city.

This evening, savour a special Farewell Dinner with new friends at The Cathay Room in the Fairmont Peace Hotel, overlooking both the Bund and Huangpu River.

Day 13: Depart Shanghai

After breakfast this morning, your incredible journey through China draws to a conclusion with a transfer to the airport for your onward flight home.

Today, head for the Great Wall of China, and absorb fantastic views on a cable Car ride to the well-preserved Mutianyu section. Later, visit the Sacred Way of the Ming Dynasty Tombs, and stop at a jade factory before returning to the city via the Beijing National Stadium (the Bird’s Nest).

Enhance Your Journey: You may wish to take the opportunity to attend a spectacular show of kung fu and dance, as you discover the story of a young boy on a journey to becoming a kung fu master.

Day 4: Beijing - Yichang - Embark Cruise

Insider Experience: This morning, enjoy a pedicab tour of Beijing’s old hutongs (alleys) and stop along the way to visit the home of a local Chinese family.

Later today, head to the airport for your included flight to Yichang. Transfer to your river ship to enjoy dinner on board.

Day 5: Three Gorges Dam - Xiling Gorge

Relax today and take in the stunning scenery of the Yangtze River as you cruise through the picturesque Three Gorges region. Disembark for a tour of the incredible Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydropower project. Later, cruise through Xiling Gorge, the longest and deepest of the Three Gorges.

Day 6: Three Lesser Gorges - Wu Gorge - Qutang Gorge

Travel to the Daning River, home to the smaller but equally spectacular Three Lesser Gorges. Continue on through Wu Gorge, known for its sheer peaks and cliff faces, then pass between the Chijia and Baiyan mountains on the way to Qutang Gorge, the narrowest and most dramatic of the magnificent Three Gorges.

Day 7: Shibaozhai

Arrive today at the base of a steep hill, into which is built Shibaozhai, a striking red pagoda. Disembark and explore the pagoda’s 12 floors - each of which contains a range of unique artefacts. Later, there may also be an option to visit the ‘Ghost City’ of Fengdu (own expense). Back on board, enjoy a final onboard dinner with your fellow travellers.

Day 8: Chongqing, - Xi’An

Disembark for the final time this morning in Chongqing and head to the Chongqing Zoo. Here, see the famous giant panda, a national symbol of China that is now critically endangered. Later, board your included flight to Xi’an.

Insider Experience: Tonight, indulge in a dumpling banquet and take in a Tang Dynasty show.

Day 9: Xi’An

Travel via a clay factory to the Museum of Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses. Here, see the three excavation pits that contain countless sculptures of soldiers, chariots and horses that were buried around 210 BC.

Insider Experience: Tonight, head to Xi’an’s bustling Muslim Quarter to wander amid the street food stalls.

Day 10: Xi’An - Shanghai - Wuzhen

After a free morning, board your included flight to Shanghai. From here, travel to the ancient water town of Wuzhen, home to a charming network of canals.

Today you’ll enjoy a cruise along the picturesque Li River, taking in the magnificent karst peaks. Stroll through the markets in Yangshuo before returning to Guilin.

Day 15: Yangshuo - Hong Kong

Insider Experience: Visit the Reed Flute Cave, home to many amazing rock formations as well as inscriptions dating back to the Tang Dynasty.

Return to the Li River today. Afterwards, explore Fubo Hill Park then board your included flight to Hong Kong.
