Discover the Wealth of Northern Madagascar

The principle of this tour program is simple, it comes to travel by taking the time to do things, to see people, to understand their lives. This approach of Madagascar aims to be intimate and soft. Diego Suarez, the Amber Mountain, the Tsingy of Ankarana, Nosy Be … all names that evoke northern Madagascar’s atmosphere and diversity. We walk in this small charming city and visit the area and sites around the huge bay. We will see in the lands of extraordinary wildlife park of Amber Mountain. The Red Tsingy and those of Ankarana are unavoidable in the area. Our rides are quiet with exciting discoveries. It is on the island of Nosy Be that we finish our stay with a relaxing time on the seaside.

Itinerary 
Day 1: Arrive Antananarivo

Arrival in Antananarivo your guide will welcome you at the airport before transferring to your hotel. Depending on the arrival time, we let you relax a few hours before we then walk towards the town to discover the old town around the Queen’s Palace with our guide.

Day 2: Antananarivo - Diego Suarez

Transfer to Antananarivo Ivato Airport where we assist you to check-in for the 1h.15m domestic flight to the north of Madagascar. Your guide welcomes you at the airport of Diego Suarez and takes you for a stroll to the lively market and the port inside the huge Diego Bay. Diego Suarez is a slow going town, often dozing in the heat of the day. It is a slow moving town, relaxed mood; it is easy to get the feel of the atmosphere of northern of Madagascar.

Day 3: The 3 Bays

Today we drive along the Montagne des Français to join the Three Bays. It is a nice 2 to 4 hours walk which combines the bay of Dunes, Pigeons and Sakalava. The channel that separates the huge Diego bay from the Indian Ocean is close; we are now in Cap Miné. This place is full of history and the remnants of the French presence are still visible. We then stroll on Orangea and Ramena beaches. There is a possibility to climb to the top of the Montagne des Français summit and enjoy a beautiful panorama during sunset. We then return to our hotel in the evening.

Day 4: Montagne d’Ambre National park

Start the visit of Amber Mountain National Park with a local guide to this lush forest. This is the first Park in Madagascar. It has special vegetation with tree ferns, palms, orchids and several rare species of trees. Waterfalls and crater lakes decorate our walk. There are seven kinds of lemurs in the forest, we can meet crowned lemur, Sanford lemur. We might see chameleons, gecko, leaf tailed gecko and many colourful birds. There is a possibility of walking back to the hotel depending on time.

Day 5: Diego Suarez - Tsingy Rouges - Iharana Bush Camp

We leave Joffreville village behind us to reach Ankarana National Park. We turn off on the way to visit the Red Tsingy. The geological history of this formation is the same as Tsingy of Ankarana but with some thousands years of difference. Red Tsingy is due to the erosion of sandstone, instead of limestone for Ankarana Tsingy. We drive back to the main road and continue until we reach our hotel.

Day 6: Tsingy, Laka-Laka lake & the panoramic view of Ambatomiloloha

You will have half day to discover the tsingy and its world. We will visit the lake and the panoramic view of Ambatomiloloha.
There is a private path with ladders, bridges, guardrails for Iharana’s guests. The starting point is the camp itself with two choices: depart on foot or on a boat. Let us guide you until the chameleon cave…
The greatest specialist of Tsingys, Jean Claude Dobrilla, designed this tour. He also initiated the designing of Bemaraha National Park. It is open to everyone and is completely unique. The biodiversity, the endemic ecosystem will be revealed to you during this thrilling experience. Don’t forget your camera – for those who are keen on photos: you will see lemurs, butterflies, birds, various colorful flora, invertebrates…
We will also see the famous lake. Enjoy its luxurious fauna and flora: various bird species such as heron, cattle egret, kingfishers, drongos which are considered as the king of the birds or various colorful and shimmering butterflies. This is an excellent spot for amateur photographers. The canoe rambling is an opportunity for a peaceful and calm moments.
At the end of the day, under the soft sunset, you will finish your stroll at Ambatomiloloha’s panoramic viewpoint while following the paths in the massif. A delightful drink is ready to welcome you at this panoramic viewpoint. Enjoy the drinks while admiring the beautiful sunset.

Day 7: Ankarana Reserve - Ankify

We stop in Ambilobe town where we walk around the busy morning market then continue to the Mahavavy River where there are other important activities going on. This region is also famous for sugar cane plantation and its rum. We also pass through coffee, cocoa and ylang-ylang plantations on the way to Ankify; we will have a few stops to learn about those.
We arrive at our hotel by the sea in the afternoon.

Day 8: Valley of Sambirano

This tour allows you to discover Sambirano which is at the centre of the economy of the region with wide plantations of cocoa, rice fields, villages and its real water tower. Visiting inside Sambirano valley is an opportunity to learn about locals’ life organization and enjoy green landscape between forested mountains and the river banks. Ambobaka village is famous for traditional medicine. A lineage of healers practice ancestral knowledge to heal with plants and different ways of massage. We visit a healing herbs garden, try a dugout tour trip on the Ramena River then enjoy a picnic lunch and a swim under the waterfall. We return to our hotel at Ankify in the afternoon to enjoy the sea, facing Nosy Be.

Day 9: Ankify - Nosy Be

We embark by speed boat in the morning to join Hell-Ville (Andoany) which is the capital of Nosy Be, on the way passing close by to Nosy Komba and Nosy Tanikely. We reach our beachfront hotel by taxi then enjoy lunch on arrival. You will be with your guide up to the reception of your hotel. Afternoon is at leisure. We invite you to go and meet local people who are quiet and friendly. Evening at leisure at the hotel.

Day 10, 11 & 12: Nosy Be

Many activities are possible from the hotel: water sport, fishing, excursion in some islands, boat trips, motorbike or bicycle renting. Nosy Komba Island with its fishing village, and island Nosy Tanikely which is a protected marine reserve and one of the best snorkeling sites in the area. One full day of real pleasure! The hotel reception will advise you and help you with all these activities. We also recommend a walk to Mont Passot in late afternoon for a beautiful panorama of the island at sunset, or you can just laze around on the beach. Enjoy your evenings at your hotel in front of the sea.

Day 13: Nosy Be - Antananarivo

Morning at leisure after breakfast at the hotel and then transfer to the airport to fly to Antananarivo.
Lunch on spot or in Tana depending to flight schedules. If the time allows we make a quick stop in the crafts market to look for basketery, marquetery, wood carvings, metal toys, miniature cars and some semi-precious stones, all in very relaxed mood. Transfer to the airport for your departure flight.

Discover Southern Madagascar

On this itinerary we discover a variety of highland landscapes, National Parks, lemurs and ethnic groups. All the population are extremely welcoming. At first, we cross the road N7, to meet the locals in villages, in the fields and while hiking in Ranomafana. We head southwards to see lemurs in the reserve of Anja and the landscapes of the National Park of Isalo, ending with a relaxing stay at the edge of a lagoon, in Vezo Country.

Day 1: Arrive Antananarivo

Arrival in Antananarivo your guide will welcome you at the airport before transferring to your hotel. Depending on the arrival time, we let you relax a few hours before we then walk towards the town to discover the old town around the Queen’s Palace with our guide.

Day 2: Antananarivo - Antsirabe

This morning we meet with our guide then enjoy breakfast in the hotel before heading south, passing through Antananarivo. Rice fields and typical villages of the Highlands represent the landscape directly after Antananarivo.
We stop in Ambatolampy to discover the rather amazing work of aluminum for the making of cooking pots which are distributed throughout the country. We take lunch in town then continue towards Antsirabe in the afternoon. We take our time for a city tour and experience “pousse-pousse” (rickshaw) riding for those who want to try; it is the main transport for locals.

Day 3: Walking in the Highlands

Why the Highlands? Simply because it has the emblematic scenery of Madagascar, a unique landscape composed of different hills with crest lines, villages on the slope, houses made of bricks and thatch roof, colorful valley with rice fields: green, ochre, red and beige. These magnificent hikes take us to the countryside world with authentic colors, meeting local people who enjoy discussions with their visitors. We see women carrying buckets of water on their heads as in Africa, farmers working in their rice fields and sometimes we meet blacksmiths working the same process for ages. The walk is organized by a local association, a partnership with young guides from the area so we contribute partly to the development of the region.

Day 4: Antsirabe - Ranomafana

We stay on road N7 and progress towards the south. We shop around in Ambositra and visit Zafimaniry artisans workshop, look for carved wood or a piece of marquetery box made with care. We stroll around in town before continueing to Ranomafana. We are now in the heart of Betsileo tribe area and are at the highest point of Madagascar Highlands and the road is more and more winding. We turn off to the east and arrive in the rainforest in the late afternoon.

Day 5: Ranomafana - Fianarantsoa

We arrive at Ranomafana National Park office after our morning drive. This is one of the most beautiful sites of the primary forest and rain forest that Madagascar can offer. We walk into the park with a local guide, a very humid environment. We should take waterproofs for this visit. We can find many species of lemurs including the Golden bamboo lemur (Hapalemur aureus), the red-fronted brown lemur (Eulemur fulvus), red-bellied lemur (Eulemur rubriventer) and we can meet also some rare and endangered species such as the Greater bamboo lemur (Hapalemur simus). In botanical terms, the park is the a genetic reservoir of some rare and endemic plant species, but also many medicinal plants. We drive back to the main road N7 after to reach Fianarantsoa town.

Day 6: Fianarantsoa - Tsaranoro

We take a short break at Ambalavao to see the hand-made Antemoro paper workshop. Arab people introduced this variety of mulberry bark-based paper to Madagascar in the fifteenth century and it is still made the same way at this little workshop at Ambalavao. Visit the small Anja reserve and meeting with the lemurs Catta. We take an off road track which is difficult sometimes but the landscape is beautiful, we drive to Tsaranoro Valley, ending the route with a 2 km walk is recommended.
We are facing this huge mountain mass, and its granitic crests hide the horizon.

Day 7: Discovery of Tsaranoro valley

Just amazing! From your hotel, we stroll in the forest close to the foothills. Huge granite domes make these mountains with narrow valleys, an amazing spot, especially at sunrise and sunset. Your guide will lead you through the forest to meet ring-tailed lemur, he will explain also about local beliefs. If you want more sportive hikes, we invite you to climb onto the "chameleon", a small mountain not far from the hotel, or walk around the Tsaranoro cliff by the south. These are hikes which do not present any technical difficulties and offer magnificent views.

Day 8: Tsaranoro - Ranohira

Departure for Ranohira after breakfast and today we are heading southwards for the wide open spaces. After breakfast in the hotel we drive back on the same track to reach the main road, pass by the South gates to Ihosy town before passing through the Ihorombe plateau and from one mountain to another. The Isalo is in front of us, the day comes to its end and the sunset should be great!

Day 9: Isalo National Park

A short drive to join the Isalo National Park foothills. We start the walk quietly with a small rucksack, through impressive landscape, canyons, natural pool and magic rock erosions.
Isalo is a continental sandstone plateau dating from Jurassic era. There are many rock formations with different shapes here. The nature has adapted to a dry climate. This park has a different ecosystem, endemic rupicolous flora such as Aloe, Euphorbia, Pachypodium and Kalanchoe. We picnic in the Tapia forest. Some walks are possible around or going up to summits gives us splendid views. NOTE: Walk pace and duration depend on your ability (minimum 2h). Our guide will offer advice accordingly.

Day 10: Ranohira - Ifaty

Today progress to the South West towards the Mozambique Channel, Driving 245 km from Ranohira to Tuléar via a variety of botanical settings in the morning. We stop on the way to se e Mahafaly tribe typical tombs which are nicely painted and decorated, on which are erected some amazing wooden sculptures. The sea can be seen far away before we reach Tuléar.
Visit of the Arboretum Antsokay, an interesting botanic garden where we enjoy lunch on the terrace. A road along the coast leads us to Ifaty. Installation to the hotel, almost feet in the water.

Discover the West of Madagascar

On this adventure we discover the real Madagascar and is a little off the main track. We meet with local people during the journey in the “rando highlands”. Head to Miandrivazo, we stay overnight in Antsirabe. We continue the ride the next day to join Masiakampy where we embark on a boat by lunch time. We navigate in the afternoon spending two days on a scenic river trip on the Tsiribihina River; the boat crew prepare all the food we take on board. We spend nights in a tent on the river bank. Our 4WD then take us towards Bemaraha National Park to visit the Great Tsingy which is one of the most amazing spots. Drive to Morondava, stop in the famous Baobab Avenue when the sun is setting to make spectacular photos. End the journey in Morondava. Then we return to Antananarivo.

Day 4: Antsirabe - Tsiribihina River

Early start after the breakfast we pass through Betafo and Mandoto villages. We make a quick stop to have a look at gold washers from the bridge. We are in the mid-west, at Itremo region. We take a track after Miandrivazo village towards Masiakampy pier. Our barge and the crew are waiting for us to go down the River. Lunch on board. We leave the river bank straight and by the river meanders we run into the bush. It is only the beginning of the cruise.
Overnight: Camp Site, 2 nights

A night under the stars around campfire, in the nature, We like it ! We provide SVALBARD brand FERRINO tents. These tents are for 3 persons but we only put 2 persons inside. Both sides have access door with mosquito net and the entrances are a kind of apse where we put a mat for your bags. We also provide a 5 cm thick foam mattress. Bring your own sleeping bag

Day 5: River trip on Tsiribihina River by boat

It is a large and quiet river, we go forward slowly with a relaxing and peaceful mood. We set up our camp on the white sand at water’s edge in the evening. The crew prepares the meal and serves it onboard. Passengers can move around, play cards, read books or go up to the solarium roof for a sunbathing and admire the scenery. Often the locals come to us in the evening and play local music and dance.

Day 6: Tsiribihina River - Bekopaka

Breakfast on board. We continue the descent in the morning and getting closer to many villages and the river is becoming more frequented. We come alongside Belo / Tsiribihina and still lunch aboard and finally bid farewell to our crew. We board our 4WD at the landing stage. An uncomfortable track leads us to Bemaraha Tsingy National Park, a hundred kilometers which takes half a day drive. We cross Manambolo River to get to Bekopaka village.

Day 7: Tsingy of Bemaraha National Park

This site is one of the most extraordinary. The TSINGY are real cathedrals of limestone, this dense network of faults, cracks and blocks of limestone carved in blades is one of the most spectacular landscapes of Madagascar. The formation of this massif was in the middle Jurassic, approx. 200 million years ago. During the period the sea still recovered this region of Bemaraha. Then this immense plate of corals and shells lifted up. Exposed outdoors for 5 million years, the rain, with its work of erosion sculptured the formation we see today. Among these marvels there are 6 species of lemurs, reptiles and 53 varieties of birds. It is also the housing environment of one of the smallest sorts of chameleon, the “Brookesia Perarmata”. These two days, together with guides and porters, are dedicated to the discovery of this most surprising site.

Day 8: Tsingy of Bemaraha National Park

Day 9: Bekopaka - Morondava

We head back to Morondava, crossing the Manambolo and Tsiribihina rivers by ferry again. It can take a little time sometimes. We pass through the famous “Allée des Baobabs” just before we get to Morondava town. We are there at the right time, the sun is low, raking light, and smooth trunks reflect the orange rays of the sun. This is an opportunity for more great pictures. We returned to the town of Morondava and we settle into our hotel by the sea.

Day 10: Morondava - Antananarivo

Breakfast at the hotel and we transfer to the airport for our flight to Antananarivo. According to the flight schedules, lunch here or in Tana. If the timing is OK, we make a quick stop in the crafts market find basketery, marquetery, wood carvings, metal toys, miniature cars and some semi-precious stones, all in very relaxed mood.

Day 11: Depart Antananarivo

Your guide is waiting at the reception of the hotel for take you to the airport.
