Days 1, 2 & 3: Nairobi – Chyulu Hills

Depart Nairobi and fly to Ol Donyo. On arrival, check in for 3 nights accommodation including all meals, drinks, laundry and activities. Ol Donyo Lodge’s location is unrivalled with full views of Mount Kilimanjaro and in the path of seasonal elephant migrations. The whole area is reserved for Ol Donyo guests only with no other tourists or safari vehicles in sight! Each lodge is en suite, with indoor and outdoor showers, a bath, twin vanities and flushing toilets. They all have ‘star beds’ on the roof, overlooking the dramatic Mount Kilimanjaro— perfect for private sun-downers or sleeping under the stars. Safaris are conducted daily in 4×4 vehicles as well as tracking and walking safaris. There is also the more adventurous option of mountain biking and horseback riding or even joining the bloodhounds as they track wildlife through the savannah—popular with children. Floor to ceiling net walls and the marquis ceiling make for very open-air and inviting environs. The en suite facilities consist of a double basin vanity, flush toilet and shower. Scheduled flight to Amboseli Game Reserve. Lunch and afternoon game drive in camp’s shared vehicle. Tortilis Camp is home to some of the largest elephants in Africa. 17 tents under thatch, on wooden platforms capture the essence of Africa. The camp is renowned for its high standards of service and spectacular views of truly memorable sunsets over the famous Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.

Morning and afternoon game drives in shared camp’s vehicle.

Day 4: Samburu Game Reserve

Samburu Intrepids is a lush oasis on the banks of the great Uaso Nyiro River in Samburu Game Reserve. The 28 luxury tented camp is a delight to be in – deliciously cooled by the river breeze and the forest.

Day 1: Arrive Nairobi

After breakfast check out and depart with picnic lunches. Drive to Amboseli National Park to arrive in time for an en-route game drive in the park.

Day 3: Amboseli National Park

Magnificent views of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro greet visitors from anywhere in this park. The park takes its name from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust”. The largest elephants in Africa live here and on some mornings over 600 have been counted in the swamps. Early morning and afternoon game drives offer the chance to track lion, cheetah, wildebeest and the rare black rhino.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru National Park

Depart after breakfast and drive to Lake Nakuru National Park. Picnic lunch will be provided on the way. Check in to the park in time for your evening game drive.

Spend the day in Masai Mara with morning and afternoon game drives. The Mara is home to some 95 species of mammals, amphibians and reptiles and over 400 bird species. Other game includes hippopotami, cheetah, Grant’s gazelle, impala, topi, Coke’s hartebeest, giraffe, Roan antelope and wildebeest.

Day 1: Arrive Addis Ababa

Welcome to the Ethiopian capital and transfer to your hotel.

Explore the city of Addis Ababa, founded in 1886. Visit the National Museum, home to the fossilised hominid ‘Lucy’; St. George and Holy Trinity Cathedrals and the Mercato, Africa’s largest market.

Day 3: Addis Ababa – Bahir Dar

Fly north to Bahir Dar, located on the southern shores of Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile. Afternoon sightseeing of this town referred to by some as the Ethiopian Riviera, thanks to its wide streets shaded by palm trees and views across Lake Tana’s shimmering waters.

Day 4: Bahir Dar

Hike to the beautiful Tis Isat Falls (Blue Nile Falls) followed by an afternoon cruise on Lake Tana. Watch local fishermen at work in traditional papyrus reed boats, and visit a selection of the remote island monasteries including Ura Kidane Mehret with its extraordinary murals and frescoes.

Day 5: Bahir Dar – Simien Mountains

Skirt the northern shores of the lake passing rural villages and farmers along the road to Gondar, the 17th and 18th century capital. Famous for its medieval castles and churches, some of the sights you’ll explore include Fasiledes Castle and the 16th century Church of Debre Birhan Selassie with its iconic ceiling of painted angels. Late afternoon, continue by road to the breathtaking Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Your lodge is situated on the edge of an escarpment with breathtaking views all around.

Day 6: Simien Mountains – Gondar

Spend a full day exploring the parks truly dramatic jagged mountain peaks, deep valleys and sharp precipices. The national park is also home to some extremely rare animals such as the Gelada monkey, the Simien fox and the Walia ibex, found nowhere else in the world. Discover the extraordinary wildlife and scenery on a short trek through the park. Afterwards return by road to Gondar.

Day 7: Gondar – Axum

A flight north to the oldest city in Ethiopia. An afternoon exploring this ancient trading post and the impressive stelae fields where carved columns represent the tombs of ancient rulers.

Day 8: Axum – Lalibela

Fly to the World Heritage site of Lalibela. Explore the monolithic red-hued churches carved into the rock. Your guide will lead you through the network of crevices and tunnels linking each of the churches. Still in use today, step inside and you may see a robed priest observing the faith in time-honoured fashion.

Day 9: Lalibela

Discover the eastern group of rock churches. Smaller in size, these are no less impressive with intricate carvings and many dark tunnels to explore. Finish the day with an Ethiopian coffee ceremony.

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Jinka

Transfer to Addis Ababa Airport for your flight to Jinka. On arrival visit the South Omo Research Centre and museum which focuses on the various ethnic groups living in South Omo. You also visit a Yetnebersh village to watch how the Ari distil their own liquor from sorghum, garlic and maize.

Day 2: Jinka – Turmi

This morning head into Mago National Park on the east bank of the River Omo, home to a wide range of ethnic groups. Visit a Mursi village and learn something of their unique habits including lip plates and large decorative ear plugs. En route to Turmi there will be a stop in a Bena village to visit the Beshada people who are adorned with clay and wear impressive headdresses. Afterwards continue to Turmi, home of the proud Hamar tribe. If your visit falls on a Saturday there is an opportunity to wander around the colourful Saturday Dimeka market, where tribes travel for miles to trade.

Day 3: Turmi

Following breakfast drive and cross the Omo River and visit the Bume tribe who are renowned as great warriors. They are also specialised crocodile hunters using harpoons from a dugout canoe. Cross back over the Omo River and drive to the village of Kolcho to visit the Karo tribes who are considered the masters of body painting when preparing for a dance, feast or celebration.

Day 4: Turmi – Arba Minch

This morning after breakfast drive to Arba Minch. En route you will view the beautiful terraced agricultural fields of the Konso people who are well known for their intricately terraced hillsides, fine woven materials, and the carved totems with which they decorate their graves. This afternoon enjoy a boat trip on Lake Chamo for an opportunity to spot hippos and Nile crocodiles.

Day 5: Arba Minch – Addis Ababa

This morning drive up into the hills to visit to the village of Chencha, home to the Dorze who are renowned cotton weavers whose tall beehive-shaped dwellings are among the most distinctive traditional structures to be seen anywhere in Africa. Their weavings and the shama cloth produced around Chencha is considered to be the finest in Ethiopia. Transfer to Arba Minch Airport your departure flight back to Addis Ababa where tonight you will have a wonderful cultural evening at a local Restaurant. Witness a performance displaying some of the country’s many diverse cultural dances and costumes, and enjoy a traditional meal with a drink of Tej, a type of wine made from Honey.

Day 01: Arrive Cape Town

Arrive in Cape Town where we’ll meet you on arrival and transfer you to your hotel, affectionately known as Mt Nellie. At the foot of the Table Mountain, and walking distance of Company’s Garden and restaurants, this exquisitely restored colonial hotel was painted pink over 100-years ago. Upon arrival, enjoy some time to settle in before savouring a warm welcome reception.

Day 02: Cape Town

A gateway to Cape Town’s past, you will stop at the Castle of Good Hope for a tour of this historic landmark. Afterwards, you will board the iconic aerial cableway to the top of Table Mountain, before embarking on your included sightseeing activity. Perhaps spend the afternoon at the Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront with a visit to the largest museumof contemporary African art in the world, the Zeitz Mocaa Museum, followed by a drink or afternoon tea at the Silo Hotel. Or, set off on a heritage tour where you will discover the neighbourhoods of Bo-Kaap and District Six. Maybe set out on a hike along the Camps Bay Pipe Track, which offers views above the gorgeous beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay. Tonight, enjoy a dinner at a local restaurant to savour Cape Town’s Fabulous food.

Day 03: Cape Town – Cape Peninsula

This morning, you will journey along the coastal Chapman’s Peak Drive to Cape Point. En route, take in the South African beach scenery, its quaint villages and the ‘tip’ of Africa, Cape Point, before continuing on to Simon’s Town for lunch. Nearby is Boulders Beach, where you might get the chance to see a colony of penguins, before returning to your hotel.

Day 04: Robben Island – Stellenbosch

This morning, meet with a former prison guard for a private tour at Robben Island. Originally assigned to guard Nelson Mandela, you will be moved by his stories of the island and the Maximum Security Prison where thousands of South African Freedom Fighters were incarcerated. It’s then onto the oak-shaded streets of Stellenbosch for the remainder of the day at the Lanzerac Hotel. Here, let the hotel’s tremendous history, character and charm unfold before you, upon the backdrop of magnificent mountains.

Day 05: Stellenbosch

Today you’ll explore Stellenbosch, and admire its Cape Dutch architecture and colonial history. Today you will fly to Kasane in Botswana, then travel by coach and boat into Namibia where you will board your riverboat, the Zambezi Queen for two nights. From your perfect vantage point directly on the river that flourishes with life, you will enjoy incredible game safaris on the Chobe River.

Day 10: Chobe River

Prepare for a superb day of viewing animals on safari boat rides.

Day 11: Disembark Zambezi Queen – Chobe River + Livingstone

Disembark your riverboat and cross the border into Botswana then into Zambia. You will then be transferred to your hotel overlooking the Zambezi River, with direct access to Victoria Falls. Once you’ve checked in, relax at your hotel or take a leisurely walk to the falls.

Take in the spectacular, expansive views and watch out for wildlife, as you travel to Serengeti National Park. At Olduvai Gorge, also known as the Cradle of Mankind, enjoy a private tour of the earliest evidence of the existence of human ancestors.

Day 18: Serengeti National Park

The plains of Serengeti National Park are home to an incredible amount of animals. Rise early this morning for a game drive. Back at your lodge, enjoy some time to relax. Day 19: Serengeti National Park

A third day in the national park illuminates the opportunity to spy any animals that you may have missed on game drives yesterday.

Day 20: Serengeti National Park – Masai Mara

Board a light aircraft for your journey to Kenya, where you will take a picturesque flight to the Masai Mara. Shortly after arriving, head off-road through the savannah on your first game drive. Afterwards, retire to your tent retreat.

Day 21: Masai Mara

Take in the majestic South African beach scenery before continuing on to historic Simon’s Town which has been an important naval base for more than 200 years. Nearby Simon’s Town is Boulders Beach. Make a visit here and see a colony of penguins up close.

Day 4: Cape Town – Kruger National Park

This morning, board your plane and fly from Cape Town to Kruger National Park, where you enter the private Ngala Reserve. Settle in to your accommodation and enjoy the scenery as you relax with sundowner drinks.

Day 5: Kruger National Park

Rise early before heading out on a morning game drive with experienced trackers. It’s then back to your lodge for some time to relax and enjoy lunch before setting off on another game drive this afternoon. Depart Arusha by 4WD today and head to Tarangire National Park, whose landscape is teeming with imposing baobabs and vast savannah plains.Along the way, make a stop at a Maasai village. Here, you’ll learn how the women are creating a sustainable living, thanks to improved water conditions and the ability to grow vegetables for food and income. After your time spent at the Masai village, arrive at Tarangire in the afternoon. Settle in and head out on your first game drive here.

Day 14: Tarangire National Park

The plains of Tarangire National Park are home to an incredible amount of animals, but they are most famous for the annual elephant migration. Day 15: Tarangire National Park – Ngorongoro Crater

Depart Tarangire National Park after breakfast this morning. You’ll be staying close to the Ngorongoro Crater, which is the world’s largest inactive, and unfilled volcanic crater. This afternoon, perhaps take an included optional game drive through Lake Manyara National Park before enjoying some time to relax. This evening, sit down to a delicious dinner at your romantic country lodge.

Day 16: Ngorongoro Crater

Enjoy a game drive into the Ngorongoro Crater. During your time at the crater today, you’ll also stop for a picnic lunch, giving you time to take in the surrounds. Among them are wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and lions, so make sure you have your camera ready to capture the abundant wildlife.

Day 17: Olduvai Gorge, Serengeti National Park

Visit the prehistoric site, Olduvai Gorge, for a private lecture and tour. One of the world’s most important prehistoric sites, evidence of early humans has been made here, and the gorge is known as the ‘cradle of mankind’. Visit Featherbed Nature Reserve, a pristine piece of paradise on the Western Head of Knysna, accessible only by ferry. Cross the Knysna lagoon and join a park guide for a 4WD journey to the top of Western Head. Later, you may like to join an optional bushwalk that takes you into ancient sea caves.

Depart Knysna and continue along the Garden Route. Make a stop to visit Monkeyland Primate Reserve, the world’s first free-roaming multi-species primate sanctuary. Head for Amboseli National Park, arriving at Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge in time for lunch. Located against the backdrop of Mt Kilimanjaro and in the heart of this world-famous national park, the lodge offers you the perfect base from which to embark on your Kenyan safari. After lunch, you will enjoy an afternoon game drive to look for the Big Five as well as hippos and a variety of water fowl which can be found near the park’s wetlands. It is a truly incredible spectacle to see these animals free-ranging across the plains or wallowing in the swamps, all with Mt Kilimanjaro looming majestically in the background. Sundowner drinks at Observation Hill rounds out a perfect first game drive in Amboseli National Park. You’ll then return to the lodge for dinner.

Transfer to Arusha Airport for your flight into Serengeti National Park. You’ll be met on the ground by your driver guide for a game drive into the golden plains of the national park. Day 1: Arrive Cape Town

Arrive in Cape Town, where we’ll meet you on arrival and transfer you to your hotel, affectionately known as Mt Nellie. At the foot of the Table Mountain, and walking distance of Company’s Garden, this exquisitely restored colonial hotel was painted pink over 100-years ago. Upon arrival, enjoy some time to settle in before savouring a warm welcome reception.

Built by Dutch colonialists, stop at the Castle of Good Hope for a tour of this historic pentagonal fortress that is the oldest colonial building in South Africa. Afterwards, board the aerial cableway to the top of Table Mountain, before embarking on your included sightseeing activity. Perhaps spend the afternoon at the Victoria and Alfred (VandA) Waterfront with a visit to the largest museum of contemporary African art in the world, the Zeitz Mocaa Museum, followed by a drink or afternoon tea at the Silo Hotel. Nearby is Boulders Beach, where you might see a colony of penguins, before returning to your hotel.

This morning, meet with a former prison guard for a private tour at Robben Island. Originally assigned to guard Nelson Mandela, you will be moved by his stories of the island and the Maximum Security Prison where thousands of South African Freedom Fighters were incarcerated. After your private tour of Robben Island, head for the oak-shaded streets of Stellenbosch for the remainder of the day at the Lanzerac Hotel. Here, let the hotel’s tremendous history, character and charm unfold before you, upon the backdrop of magnificent mountains.

Today you will fly to Johannesburg, where you will stay overnight in preparation for our flight to Botswana in the morning.

Today you will fly to Kasane in Botswana, then travel by coach and boat into Namibia where you will board your riverboat, the Zambezi Queen for two nights. From your perfect vantage point directly on the river that flourishes with life, you will enjoy incredible game safaris on the Chobe River.

Cruise: Zambezi Queen or similar

Prepare for a superb day of viewing animals on safari boat rides. Why not seize the opportunity and visit a Namibian village, or try your hand at tiger fishing.

Day 11: Disembark Zambezi Queen, Chobe River, Livingstone

This morning, disembark your riverboat and cross the border into Botswana, then into Zambia. You will then be transferred to your hotel overlooking the Zambezi River, with direct access to Victoria Falls. Once you’ve checked in, you can relax at your luxurious hotel or take a leisurely walk to the falls.

Today presents a selection of ways in which you could spend the day. You might like to embark on Chief Mukuni’s Village Cultural Tour then visit the Maramba Market. Alternatively, marvel at the spectacular sight of thundering Victoria Falls from a helicopter flight. Or tour the Zimbabwean side of the falls and enjoy a lunch. After exploring Livingstone on your chosen sightseeing activity, savour a farewell dinner.

After breakfast, your African Journey adventure concludes. We say goodbye before we transfer you to the airport for your flight
