West of Madagascar

The principle of this 11 Day West of Madagascar tour program is simple, it comes to travel by taking the time to do things, to see the locals, to understand their way of life. This approach of Madagascar aims to be intimate and soft. Diego Suarez, the Amber Mountain, the Tsingy of Ankarana, Nosy Be … all names that evoke northern Madagascar’s atmosphere and diversity. We walk in this small charming city and visit the area and sites around the huge bay. We will see in the lands of extraordinary wildlife park of Amber Mountain. The Red Tsingy and those of Ankarana are unavoidable in the area. Our rides are quiet with exciting discoveries. It is on the island of Nosy Be that we finish our stay with a relaxing time on the seaside.

Planning your holiday is easy, and speak to your friendly Consultant.

Day 1: Arrive Antananarivo

Day 2: Antananarivo – Antsirabe

This morning we meet with our guide then enjoy breakfast in the hotel before heading south, passing through Antananarivo. Rice fields and typical villages of the Highlands represent the landscape directly after Antananarivo. Stop in Ambatolampy to discover the rather amazing work of aluminum for the making of cooking pots which are distributed throughout the country. We take lunch in town then continue towards Antsirabe in the afternoon. We take our time for a city tour and experience “pousse-pousse” (rickshaw) riding for those who want to try; it is the main transport for locals.

Hotel: Plumeria Hotel, 2 nights

Day 3: Walking in the Highlands

Why the Highlands? Simply because it has the emblematic scenery of Madagascar, a unique landscape composed of different hills with crest lines, villages on the slope, houses made of bricks and thatch roof, colorful valley with rice fields: green, ochre, red and beige. These magnificent hikes take us to the countryside world with authentic colors, meeting local people who enjoy discussions with their visitors. We see women carrying buckets of water on their heads as in Africa, farmers working in their rice fields and sometimes we meet blacksmiths working the same process for ages. The walk is organized by a local association, a partnership with young guides from the area so we contribute partly to the development of the region.

Day 4: Antsirabe – Tsiribihina River

Early start after the breakfast we pass through Betafo and Mandoto villages. Make a quick stop to have a look at gold washers from the bridge. We are in the mid-west, at Itremo region. We take a track after Miandrivazo village towards Masiakampy pier. Our barge and the crew are waiting for us to go down the River. Lunch on board. We leave the river bank straight and by the river meanders we run into the bush. It is only the beginning of the cruise.

A night under the stars around campfire, in the nature, We like it ! We provide SVALBARD brand FERRINO tents. These tents are for 3 persons but we only put 2 persons inside. The crew prepares the meal and serves it onboard. Passengers can move around, play cards, read books or go up to the solarium roof for a sunbathing and admire the scenery. Often the locals come to us in the evening and play local music and dance.

Day 6: Tsiribihina River – Bekopaka

Breakfast on board. Continue the descent in the morning and getting closer to many villages and the river is becoming more frequented. We come alongside Belo / Tsiribihina and still lunch aboard and finally bid farewell to our crew. We board our 4WD at the landing stage. An uncomfortable track leads us to Bemaraha Tsingy National Park, a hundred kilometers which takes half a day drive. We cross Manambolo River to get to Bekopaka village.

Hotel: Le Soleil des Tsingy, 3 nights

Day 7 & 8: Tsingy of Bemaraha National Park

This site is one of the most extraordinary. The TSINGY are real cathedrals of limestone, this dense network of faults, cracks and blocks of limestone carved in blades is one of the most spectacular landscapes of Madagascar. The formation of this massif was in the middle Jurassic, approx. 200 million years ago. During the period the sea still recovered this region of Bemaraha. Then this immense plate of corals and shells lifted up. Exposed outdoors for 5 million years, the rain, with its work of erosion sculptured the formation we see today. Among these marvels there are 6 species of lemurs, reptiles and 53 varieties of birds. It is also the housing environment of one of the smallest sorts of chameleon, the “Brookesia Perarmata”. These two days, together with guides and porters, are dedicated to the discovery of this most surprising site.

Day 9: Bekopaka – Morondava

We head back to Morondava, crossing the Manambolo and Tsiribihina rivers by ferry again. It can take a little time sometimes. We pass through the famous “Allée des Baobabs” just before we get to Morondava town. We are there at the right time, the sun is low, raking light, and smooth trunks reflect the orange rays of the sun. This is an opportunity for more great pictures. We returned to the town of Morondava and we settle into our hotel by the sea.

Hotel: Palissandre Cote Ouest

This morning you will depart early and travel north deeper into the heart of Damaraland. Enroute you will visit an extremely remote Himba village, only known to a few people. Your guide’s presence and contacts with the local community will ensure you will be welcomed as a ‘friend of a friend’ and that you will be able to spend considerable time there learning about these fascinating nomadic pastoralists. There has been virtually no modern influence on these communities, which makes for a fascinating cultural exchange. You will then continue on your journey, having a picnic lunch enroute, and arrive at Andersson’s Camp on the southern border of Etosha late afternoon. This should leave some time to relax at the camp’s floodlit waterhole whilst contemplating the fascinating impressions of the day.

Hotel: Okaukuejo Resort, 2 nights
Day 7: Etosha National Park

Today you will take an exciting morning guided game drive in the Etosha National Park, to see more of the wide variety of game and bird species found there. Return to camp for a late lunch. Late afternoon enjoy another game drive before exiting the park before sunset. Alternatively, you can choose to spend the whole day in the park with a picnic lunch. The evening can be spent game viewing at the camp’s floodlit waterhole while enjoying dinner.

Day 8: Windhoek

After breakfast this morning you will travel south from the Etosha National Park through the small towns of Outjo and Otjiwarongo before stopping at the Okonjima Day Centre. Here you will be treated to a short game drive and educational tour of the AfriCat Foundation in order to learn about the great work being done here with regards to the conservation of Africa’s large cats. Lunch will be enjoyed at the centre before continuing to Windhoek, stopping in Okahandja to visit the local craft market for some last minute curio shopping if time permits.

Hotel: Galton House
Day 9: End of Ultimate Namibia Tour

Today you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight.

African Waterways

This inspiring journey takes a privileged look at two pristine parts of Africa – the Okavango Delta and the Chobe National Park, which has one of the largest concentrations of game on the continent. The wildlife in Botswana is prolific and the landscapes diverse and dramatic. Game viewing is offered by 4WD vehicle, boat and sometimes on foot. The companionship of outstanding safari guides combined with the privacy of luxurious Sanctuary Retreats’ Lodges & Camps delivers an unforgettable safari experience.

Planning your holiday is easy, and speak to your friendly Consultant.

Day 1: Arrive Kasane – Chobe National Park

A warm A&K welcome to Botswana on arrival at Kasane airport. Transfer to your lodge in nearby Chobe National Park, Botswana’s second largest, famous for its massive herds of elephant and buffalo.

Hotel: Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero, 2 nights

Day 2: Chobe National Park

Today enjoy a morning game drive traversing the park’s diverse landscapes, getting up close to elephants, hippo, buffalo, puku and other animals that gather on the banks of the Chobe River. Lion and leopard are also found in the area. This afternoon take a boat safari on the river watching elephants as they come down to drink and bathe, and hippos grazing. Enjoy sundowners as the sun sets.

You’ll spend a morning with these gentle pachyderms on their daily forage. By participating in this activity you are supporting the Living with Elephants Foundation, a Botswana registered non-profit organisation. Later take a game drive on the grassy plains, glide along the waterways by mokoro (seasonal), or take a guided safari walk.

Day 5: Okavango Delta

Fly onwards by light aircraft to the newly refurbished Sanctuary Chief’s Camp, in the world renowned Mombo Concession, Africa’s “predator capital”. Game viewing here is outstanding with the Big Five a highlight.

Hotel: Sanctuary Chief’s Camp, 3 nights

Days 6 & 7: Okavango Delta

Further explore the Delta, experiencing the exceptional wildlife by 4WD with an expert safari guide or a mokoro ride through the waterways (in season). Back in camp, relax by your plunge pool, indulge in a safari spa treatment or simply soak up the views from your deck or from the bar.
