Day 01: Arrive Cape Town

Arrive in Cape Town where we’ll meet you on arrival and transfer you to your hotel, affectionately known as Mt Nellie. At the foot of the Table Mountain, and walking distance of Company’s Garden and restaurants, this exquisitely restored colonial hotel was painted pink over 100-years ago. Upon arrival, enjoy some time to settle in before savouring a warm welcome reception.

Day 02: Cape Town

A gateway to Cape Town’s past, you will stop at the Castle of Good Hope for a tour of this historic landmark. Afterwards, you will board the iconic aerial cableway to the top of Table Mountain, before embarking on your included sightseeing activity. Perhaps spend the afternoon at the Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront with a visit to the largest museumof contemporary African art in the world, the Zeitz Mocaa Museum, followed by a drink or afternoon tea at the Silo Hotel. Or, set off on a heritage tour where you will discover the neighbourhoods of Bo-Kaap and District Six. Maybe set out on a hike along the Camps Bay Pipe Track, which offers views above the gorgeous beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay. Tonight, enjoy a dinner at a local restaurant to savour Cape Town’s Fabulous food.

Day 03: Cape Town – Cape Peninsula

This morning, you will journey along the coastal Chapman’s Peak Drive to Cape Point. En route, take in the South African beach scenery, its quaint villages and the ‘tip’ of Africa, Cape Point, before continuing on to Simon’s Town for lunch. Nearby is Boulders Beach, where you might get the chance to see a colony of penguins, before returning to your hotel.

Day 04: Robben Island – Stellenbosch

This morning, meet with a former prison guard for a private tour at Robben Island. Originally assigned to guard Nelson Mandela, you will be moved by his stories of the island and the Maximum Security Prison where thousands of South African Freedom Fighters were incarcerated. It’s then onto the oak-shaded streets of Stellenbosch for the remainder of the day at the Lanzerac Hotel. Here, let the hotel’s tremendous history, character and charm unfold before you, upon the backdrop of magnificent mountains.

Day 05: Stellenbosch

Today you’ll explore Stellenbosch, and admire its Cape Dutch architecture and colonial history. Here you will indulge in its storied past, remarkable culture and inspiring artwork on a walking tour, before tasting traditional cuisines. You will enjoy the rest of the day at your estate, surrounded by mountains and wine farms, where you can relax or partake in the activities offered within the property.

Day 06: Cape Town – Kruger National Park

Today, fly to Kruger, before transferring to your private lodge within Kruger National Park. This evening, enjoy a round of sundowners as you soak up the African sunset, before dinner.

Day 07: Kruger National Park

Rise early today for your morning game drive with experienced trackers. It’s then back to your lodge for some time to relax before setting off on another game drive this afternoon. Day 08: Kruger National Park – Johannesburg

Today, fly to Johannesburg, where you will stay overnight in preparation for you River safari in the morning.

Day 09: Chobe River – Embark Zambezi Queen

Today you will fly to Kasane in Botswana, then travel by coach and boat into Namibia where you will board your riverboat, the Zambezi Queen for two nights. From your perfect vantage point directly on the river that flourishes with life, you will enjoy incredible game safaris on the Chobe River.

Cruise: Chobe River, Zambezi Queen, 2 nights

Day 10: Chobe River

Prepare for a superb day of viewing animals on safari boat rides.

Day 11: Disembark Zambezi Queen – Chobe River + Livingstone

Disembark your riverboat and cross the border into Botswana then into Zambia. You will then be transferred to your hotel overlooking the Zambezi River, with direct access to Victoria Falls. Once you’ve checked in, relax at your hotel or take a leisurely walk to the falls.

Day 12: Livingstone

Today presents a vast selection of ways in which you could spend the day. You might like to embark on Chief Mukuni’s Village Cultural Tour then visit the Maramba Market. Day 13: Livingstone, Nairobi

Fly to Nairobi for your East Africa safari.

Take a flight to Lake Manyara in Tanzania and join our 4WD vehicles and continue to your lodge. Savour time at leisure before a round of sundowners, followed by dinner.

Day 15: Ngorongoro Crater

Today at the crater, you will stop for a picnic lunch, giving you time to take in the surrounds. Voted as one of the Seven Wonders of Africa, the crater’s high walls are a natural enclosure to vast numbers of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and lions, so make sure you have your camera ready to capture the abundant wildlife.

Day 16: Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara

Visit a local school and Maasai village, before a barbecue lunch and optional game drive through Manyara National Park.

Day 17: Olduvai Gorge – Serengeti National Park

Take in the spectacular, expansive views and watch out for wildlife, as you travel to Serengeti National Park. At Olduvai Gorge, also known as the Cradle of Mankind, enjoy a private tour of the earliest evidence of the existence of human ancestors.

Day 18: Serengeti National Park

The plains of Serengeti National Park are home to an incredible amount of animals. Rise early this morning for a game drive. Back at your lodge, enjoy some time to relax. Day 19: Serengeti National Park

A third day in the national park illuminates the opportunity to spy any animals that you may have missed on game drives yesterday.

Day 20: Serengeti National Park – Masai Mara

Board a light aircraft for your journey to Kenya, where you will take a picturesque flight to the Masai Mara. Shortly after arriving, head off-road through the savannah on your first game drive. Afterwards, retire to your tent retreat.

Day 21: Masai Mara

Wake to the sounds of the African bush. Later, enjoy the Masai Mara on morning and afternoon game drives through the private Mara conservancy.

Tonight, try African drumming before a Welcome Dinner of Cape Malay cuisine.

A city alive with creativity, colour and natural beauty, be ready to fall in love with Cape Town today as you ride a cableway to the summit of Table Mountain before touring the city. During a free afternoon perhaps take a ferry to Robben Island; explore Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens; join an African Heritage Tour; or visit the Constantia Wine Valley.

Farewell Cape Town this morning, and travel through the Karoo region, which showcases a well preserved semidesert eco-system. Arrive at your hotel for a dinner of local produce, including ostrich.

Visit Featherbed Nature Reserve, a pristine piece of paradise on the Western Head of Knysna, accessible only by ferry. Cross the Knysna lagoon and join a park guide for a 4WD journey to the top of Western Head. Later, you may like to join an optional bushwalk that takes you into ancient sea caves.

Depart Knysna and continue along the Garden Route. Make a stop to visit Monkeyland Primate Reserve, the world’s first free-roaming multi-species primate sanctuary. The golden Highveld gives way to rolling green hills as we travel to South Africa’s Lowveld. We admire the iconic sights along Mpumalanga’s Panorama Route – the Blyde River Canyon, the heavenly landscapes of God’s Window and Bourke’s Luck Potholes. Before evening falls, we venture to our hotel near the famous Kruger National Park, our home for two nights.

Connect with nature and explore South Africa’s oldest national park in the company of a Local Specialist. Travel to landlocked eSwatini. ‘Dive Into Culture’ during a visit to a Swazi Chief’s village and gain insights into the community’s way of life, sampling some of the local pap and stew, and admiring their striking crimson traditional dress.

Day 5:  Mbabane (Swaziland) – Hluhluwe

We venture to ‘garden of province’ of KwaZulu Natal and its northern wilderness. Traversing rolling sugarcane fields and lush valleys, we arrive at Hluhluwe-Imfolozi National Park where there is an opportunity to embark on an optional 4×4 game drive. This evening enjoy a delicious South African braai – a perfect way to end the day.

Day 6:  Hluhluwe – Durban (Umhlanga Rocks)

Board an optional morning cruise on Lake St. Lucia and get up close to the hippos, crocodiles and birdlife residing in the estuary. Alternatively explore the town of St Lucia. We continue south to Durban for an effortless encounter with this tropical east coast hub, which begins with a delicious Curry Buffet at the Oyster Box Hotel, one of Trafalgar’s ‘Stays With Stories’ – a seaside hotel that captures the nostalgia of a bygone era.

Venture through the scenic Valley of 1000 Hills bound for the spectacular escarpment that winds north from the Eastern Cape to Mpumalanga. You’ll continue to the foothills of the iconic Sani Pass where you’ll have the rest of the afternoon at leisure and stay overnight .

From enigmatic mountain landscapes to South Africa’s untamed coastline, we venture through the Eastern Cape and the green hills of the Transkei, dotted with Xhosa kraals and homesteads. Discover the legacy of Nelson Mandela, at his birthplace in Xunu, then enjoy the unspoiled Wild Coast beaches of Chintsa, where the only footprints in the sand will be yours.

Walk beneath the tranquil canopy of Tsitsikamma’s giant and ancient Yellowwoods, arriving at Storms River Mouth to peer into the depths of the gorge. Our final stop today is the picturesque lagoon setting of Knysna, known as South Africa’s own Garden of Eden. Famed for its indigenous forests, fresh oysters and the two landmark Knysna Heads that stand as sentinels at the edge of the lagoon which shield the town from the Indian Ocean.

You’ll have a free day to explore the jewel of the Garden Route. Start your day with a leisurely coffee in the Knysna Quays overlooking the lagoon, then consider an Optional Experience to Featherbed Nature Reserve including a drive through the reserve to the top of the lagoon’s Western Head. This evening, why not join an Optional Experience sunset cruise to the Knysna Heads and see where the Indian Ocean crashes against their towering sandstone cliffs?

Day 13: Knysna – Cape Town 

Leave the Garden Route behind bound for the Mother City. You’ll pass through vibrant coastal towns and the Cape Winelands, winding your way along South Africa’s southern Cape coastline. Arriving in Cape Town later this afternoon, you’ll have some time to freshen up before embarking on a visit to the iconic Table Mountain by cable car this evening (weather permitting).

Day 14: Cape Town Free Day

Capture the cosmopolitan energy of South Africa’s Mother City. Spend the day exploring its streets and squares in search of a tucked-away restaurants, boutiques and galleries. Spend your final evening at a Farewell Dinner with your travelling companions indulging in delicious Cape Malay speciality dishes.

Day 1: Arrive In Johannesburg, South Africa

Day 2: Johannesburg

Today’s sightseeing starts with a visit to Soweto (South Western Township), the largest township in the country. Soweto is a part of South Africa’s turbulent past, but this multicultural area is also a reflection of today and hope for tomorrow. Along the way, see the neighborhood that was home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners: Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela. Gain some perspective of life here at Mandela House, where Nelson Mandela lived from 1946 to around 1960, when he was forced underground to elude arrest. After lunch, visit the unforgettable Apartheid Museum to learn about the founding of South Africa before delving into the apartheid era. Using photos, video, and print, the museum takes you on an extraordinary journey through the apartheid years to the 1994 democratic elections that named Nelson Mandela president.

Day 3: Johannesburg – Kruger National Park Area

Depart Johannesburg and explore the Panoramic Route known for its dramatic landscapes. Along the way, see God’s Window, the Lisbon Falls, and Berlin Falls. Continue on to the Kruger National Park area.

Day 4 & 5: Kruger Area

Rise between 5 am and 5:30 am for coffee and tea before your Early Morning Game Drive with an experienced guide. If the timing is right, you might spot some of the big cats after a night of hunting. Spend some time at leisure in the middle of the day. Perhaps book a spa treatment or simply relax at the pool. Be sure to watch for kudu, impala, giraffe, cheetah, spotted hyena, and more on your Afternoon Game Drive. As darkness descends, your guide will bring out a spotlight to help you spot nocturnal animals. Return to your lodge for dinner.

Day 6: Kruger Area – Cape Town

Enjoy some time at leisure this morning before flying to beautiful Cape Town.

Day 7: Cape Town

Today, enjoy a full day of sightseeing, starting with a Cable-Car Ride (weather permitting) up Table Mountain for stunning views of the city and its surroundings. Next, visit Boulders Beach where you will see a Colony Of Endangered African Penguins, known for the unique sound they make. After free time for lunch, continue on to Cape Point Nature Reserve for stops at the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point, the southwesternmost point on the African continent. Here, take a Funicular Ride to the steps of the old lighthouse for spectacular panoramic views. On your return journey back to Cape Town, skirt the rocky coastline as you ascend Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the most spectacular drives in the world. Enjoy the evening at your leisure.

NOTE: Each year, generally in early August, the Table Mountain cableway closes for yearly maintenance. During this time, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens will be visited.

Day 8: Cape Town

Enjoy a full day at leisure for your own discoveries. Perhaps explore the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, take an excursion to the stunning Cape winelands for wine tasting, or cruise to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. Your Tour Director has suggestions to help you make the most of your day.

Day 1: Arrive Cape Town

South Africa’s ‘Mother City’ and her iconic Table Mountain extend a warm welcome as you embark on a journey that will reveal the highlights of South Africa. Spend the day delving into Cape Town’s cosmopolitan surrounds before joining your fellow travellers and Travel Director for a Welcome Reception.

Day 2: Table Mountain and Cape Town City Tour

This morning, we encounter Table Mountain first-hand, ascending via aerial cableway to its vast flat top – a rocky wonderland of rich Cape fynbos and curious dassies (hyraxes). Peer over the bustling City Bowl and Atlantic Seaboard keeping a keen eye out for the landmarks your Travel Director will show you during this morning’s city tour, including Company Gardens, Bo-Kaap and the Castle of Good Hope. The rest of the day is yours to explore Cape Town at leisure. Ramble up Bree Street to sample the city’s vibrant coffee culture or take a stroll along the Sea Point promenade with the fellow outdoor enthusiasts.

Day 3: Cape Peninsula Tour

Circumnavigate the Cape Peninsula, from trendy Camps Bay to Cape Point and back. The crashing waves of the Atlantic to your right, the rocky 12 Apostles to your left, wind your way along one of the world’s most magnificent coastal roads towards the outcrop that is Africa’s most extreme south-western tip. Say a quiet hello to the shy penguins of Boulders Beach, see the Cape of Good Hope and travel through charming coastal towns along the way.

Day 4: Cape Winelands Excursion and Cape Town Free Time

Venture to the town of Franschhoek and see during your orientation why it is proclaimed as one of the most beautiful wine valleys in the world. In nearby Stellenbosch, you’ll ‘Connect With Locals’ over a ‘Be My Guest’ experience with host Nocawe. Learn how to make the local dish of pumpkin fritters, then be treated to a traditional Xhosa meal including Amagwinya (fried bread), Umphokogo (crumbled maize meal served with sour milk) and homemade ginger beer. Return to Cape Town for an evening at leisure.

Day 5: Cape Town – Greater Kruger National Park Area

This morning you’ll bid farewell to the ‘Mother City’ and fly to Hoedspruit (flight purchased separately) where a private game reserve near South Africa’s great Kruger National Park beckons. Then kick back, relax and settle in to one of Trafalgar’s ‘Stays With Stories’, Becks Safari Lodge, your home in the bush for the next three nights.

Day 6: Karongwe Private Reserve Safari Game Drives

The action begins as we embark on an early morning game drive through Karongwe Private Reserve with a Local Specialist game ranger and Shangaan tracker-guide. The rising sun awakens the birds and insects that share your journey into the bush, as you scour the dense brush for signs of the Big 5. After lunch, and time for a siesta and a swim, return to the bush for an afternoon safari drive.

Today enjoy another full day of game drives through Karongwe Private Reserve. Continue to scour the dense brush with your Local Specialist for incredible encounters with Africa’s iconic wildlife. Day 8: Greater Kruger National Park Area – Johannesburg

Our time in the South African bushveld comes to a close with a ‘Dive Into Culture’ visit to a local Shangaan village. Learn about the traditions and customs of the Shangaan people and how the Eco Academy there provides eco and wildlife education. The visit includes a simple meal of grilled chicken, pap, Shangaan style cabbage, and for the brave, the opportunity to try mopani worms! Fly to Johannesburg (flight purchased separately) and check into your hotel, which is located in the restaurant and entertainment hub of Melrose Arch.

Day 9: Johannesburg Sightseeing

Unlock the secrets of the ‘city of gold’ on a full-day tour to view several iconic sites including the Regina Mundi Church and Mandela’s house in Soweto. ‘Dive Into Culture’ during a visit to the Hector Pieterson Museum and the Apartheid Museum, which chronicles South Africa’s tumultuous Apartheid years.

Day 06: Disembark Zambezi Queen – Chobe River – Livingstone

This morning, disembark your riverboat and cross the border into Botswana then into Zambia. You will then be transferred to your hotel overlooking the Zambezi River, with direct access to Victoria Falls. Once you’ve checked in, relax at your hotel or take a leisurely walk to the falls.

Today at the crater, you will stop for a picnic lunch, giving you time to take in the surrounds. Day 11: Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara

Visit a local school and Maasai village, before a barbecue lunch and an optional game drive through Manyara National Park.

Day 12: Olduvai Gorge – Serengeti National Park

Take in the spectacular, expansive views and watch out for wildlife, as you travel to Serengeti National Park. At Olduvai Gorge enjoy a private tour of the earliest evidence of the existence of human ancestors.

Day 13: Serengeti National Park

The plains of Serengeti National Park are home to an incredible amount of animals. Rise early this morning for a game drive. Back at your lodge, enjoy some time to relax. This evening savour another game drive, this time observing animals as they prepare for the night time, before enjoying dinner at your lodge.

Day 14: Serengeti National Park

A third day in the national park illuminates the opportunity to see any animals that you may have missed. You might like to head off in the morning, evening or both to maximise your chances. Otherwise, you might like to relax and enjoy the beautiful setting in the bush.

Day 15: Serengeti National Park – Masai Mara

Board a light aircraft to the Masai Mara. Here, be greeted by 4WD vehicles and head off-road through the savannah on your first game drive. Afterwards, head to your tented camp where you’ll be greeted by sounds of the African bush. Enjoy dinner at your camp before retiring for the evening.

Day 16: Masai Mara

Stop for a light lunch then watch the penguins totter along the shoreline at Boulders Beach. Continue to historic Simon’s Town for some time to wander at your leisure. Named after Simon Van Der Stel, an early governor of the Dutch settlement, who arrived in the Cape in 1679, Simon’s Town is South Africa’s third oldest settlement. Van Der Stel chose it as a safe alternative to the stormy Cape coast during winter. Tonight, back in Cape Town, partake in the art of African drumming before enjoying a delicious Welcome Dinner of Cape Malay cuisine.

Today begins with a cableway ride to the top of Table Mountain, followed by a city tour. With a free afternoon, perhaps choose from one of our select experiences. Take a ferry ride to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned; enjoy an African Heritage Tour; discover the Constantia Wine Valley; or enjoy the floral displays at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens (see page 60 for further details). Day 4: Cape Town – Oudtshoorn

Travel through the Karoo region onwards to Oudtshoorn. Arrive at your hotel for a dinner of regional produce, including ostrich.

Today, discover the subterranean formations of the Cango Caves. Come face-to-face with Africa’s enormous flightless birds as you tour an ostrich farm. Straddling the southern coast of South Africa, the 300-kilometre-long Garden Route takes its name from the stunning and ecologically diverse vegetation that typifies the region. Travel through grasslands, wetlands, forests and mountainous regions, passing the numerous lagoons, lakes and rivers that dot the coastline. In Knysna, enjoy the afternoon at your leisure.

Visit the Regina Mundi Church, as well as Mandela House Museum to learn about the legacy of Nelson Mandela. Spend the evening relaxing, or perhaps venture out and explore the nearby shops and peruse the restaurants close by.

This is the best time of the day to see large herds of elephants, as well as a plethora of other animals that flock to the banks of the Chobe River. Later, retreat to your modern bush-style accommodation, which sits at the doorstep of where four African countries meet: Botswana; Namibia; Zimbabwe; and Zambia.

Day 14: Chobe National Park

You may also wish to take advantage of the lodge’s beautiful surrounds and embark on a stunning nature walk around the property. The afternoon is all about wildlife spotting, with a game drive. From here, you will board a connecting flight to Kilimanjaro Airport, where you will be transferred to your game lodge. Nestled between the Usa River and a wildlife sanctuary, Mount Meru Game Lodge is located in an idyllic location. Tonight, enjoy dinner at your lodge.

Day 25: Ngorongoro Crater – Serengeti National Park

Travel to World Heritage-listed Ngorongoro Crater. Marvel at the lush green scenery as you descend down the high crater walls. Enjoy a picnic lunch and go in search of the unique wildlife that roams this special place. Then take a 4WD out to Oldupai Gorge to explore one of the world’s most important archaeological sites. It’s then onto Serengeti National Park, best known as a host to the epic Great Migration. The park is also famous for its predators who spend their days pursuing impalas, zebras, buffalo, gazelle and more. Arrive at Kati Kati Tented Camp in the central Serengeti. At certain times of the year, you may see enormous herds of wildebeest, gazelle and zebra travelling to and from the Serengeti in search of food during the seasonal Great Migration. Plus, you can also see the predators who follow them. This afternoon, head out on an exhilarating game drive, noticing how different these landscapes are compared to those you experienced in Southern Africa. At the end of a thrilling day of exploration, perhaps unwind with a drink before sitting down to dinner this evening at your lodge.

Afterwards, enjoy a leisurely breakfast before the rest of the morning at leisure. This afternoon’s game drive, meanwhile, once again brings you plenty of chances to catch a close-up look at the animals that call the expansive grasslands of the Masai Mara home. Delight in a memorable bush dinner this evening and experience the flavours of the region. Day 23: Masai Mara – Depart Nairobi

On your final morning in the Masai Mara, transfer to the airstrip and board your scheduled flight to Nairobi. From here, you’ll board your onward flight home.
