Although best known for the population of mountain gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, there are many other wildlife experiences to discover. In Kibale Forest Reserve, track chimpanzees in the wild, spot tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park and at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park bed down at the luxurious Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, your base for gorilla tracking adventures.

Day 1: Arrive Entebbe

On arrival, transfer to your stylish new boutique hotel nestled in the leafy suburbs.

Day 2: Entebbe – Kibale National Park

Much of today is spent on the road to Kibale National Park in the far west of the country (approx 6 hours). Set against the backdrop of Lake Kyaninga and the mystical Rwenzori Mountains, Kibale has one of the highest diversities and concentration of primates of any park in Africa. It is home to a large number of endangered chimpanzees, as well as the red colobus monkey and the rare L’Hoest’s monkey. Arrive at elegant Kyaninga Lodge, where the great Rift Valley meets the might Congo basin. Set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Kyaninga and the Rwenzori Mountains, there are just nine spacious cottages on stilts made from hand-carved logs. A terrace leads down to a swimming pool overlooking the lake.

Day 3: Kibale National Park

Kibale is one of Africa’s premier destinations for chimpanzee tracking. Today you head out with your tracker in search of these engaging creatures. The forest is also home to over 300 species of birds, with six endemic to the park, and other mammals including leopard, rare forest elephants, buffalo, giant forest hog and half a dozen species of antelope.

Day 4: Kibale National Park – Queen Elizabeth National Park

Drive south (4 hours) to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The game density here is high and it supports some of the largest herds of elephant in Uganda. There is prolific plains game and a good number of predators.

Hotel: Ishasha Wilderness Camp, 2 nights

Day 5: Queen Elizabeth National Park

At Ishasha, game drives through the park by day and night are included. Resident wildlife includes Spotted hyena, leopard, hippo, elephant, buffalo, waterbuck and a population of tree climbing lions.

Day 6: Queen Elizabeth National Park – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

This morning continue south to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Arrive at your luxurious Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, with eight private comfortable, canvas tents situated uniquely inside the national park, meaning you are only minutes away from the start of your gorilla tracking adventure.

Days 7 & 8: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is home to many primates including colobus monkeys and chimpanzees, but is most notable for its population of the critically endangered mountain gorilla. Spend the next two days trekking through the forest to locate one of the habituated gorilla families. The walk is demanding, up and down steep forested slopes and through thick jungle vegetation, however sighting the gorillas in the undergrowth is an inspiring moment! Spend time observing the family as they interact with each other, play and forage.

Day 9: Bwindi – Depart Entebbe

Transfer to the airstrip for your flight to Entebbe and onward connections..

Day 1: Arrive Entebbe

On arrival you will be met and transferred to your property for an overnight stay.

Day 2: Bwindi National Park

This morning you are transferred to the airport for the scheduled flight to Bwindi National Park and onward road transfer to your lodge.

Day 3: Bwindi National Park

After an early morning briefing, experienced trackers will lead you into the forest in search of the endangered mountain gorillas. After spending an unforgettable hour observing the gorillas you will return to the lodge for late lunch. This afternoon will be at leisure.

GORILLA TRACKING: The journey, through dense foliage and up steep climbs, is abundantly rewarded with the lifetime experience of viewing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. You will have an opportunity to be within metres of these magnificent apes, sharing in their daily lives and experiencing their day-to-day activities. Mountain gorillas are extremely rare with only an estimated 850 remaining in the wild. This is an experience you won’t easily forget!

Day 4: Bwindi National Park

Today if you have pre-purchased a second gorilla permit you will trek again, or for those not undertaking a second visit, there are walks to explore the local area.

Day 5: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Today you drive to the southern Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park – Uganda’s oldest park – with a stop enroute to visit the Ishasha Community Project.

Day 6: Queen Elizabeth National Park

An early morning game drive before breakfast and then check out and drive to the Central sector of the park, check in for lunch at your next accommodation. Afternoon game drive in the Kasenyi area returning to the lodge before dusk for dinner.

Day 7: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Another day in the park with early morning and late afternoon game drives and after lunch enjoy a scheduled boat cruise on the Kazinga channel.

Day 8: Kibale Forest National Park

Today enjoy chimpanzee trekking in Chamburu before driving to Kibale Forest and an optional afternoon swamp walk.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Day 1: Arrive Entebbe

Arrive in Entebbe and check-in to your hotel.

This morning you will be transferred to Entebbe Airport for your flight to Kihihi.

On arrival at Kihihi Airstrip you will be met and transferred to Bwindi National Park. This afternoon an optional community visit (at additional expense) may be done.

Day 3: Bwindi National Park

Today set off on your Uganda gorilla tracking adventure in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Forest Reserve – home to half of the world’s total mountain gorilla population. While trekking through the dense forest you’ll have the opportunity to view the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Looking deep into the expressive brown eyes of the Gentle Giants of the park surely is the most exciting and poignant wildlife encounter that Africa has to offer. After this captivating and unforgettable experience, you will head back to your lodge.
