Explore the languid waterways and countryside of Southern Laos, taking in the lush coffee plantations and waterfalls of the Bolaven Plateau and the amazing 4,000 Islands expanse of the mighty Mekong. Watch the sun sink over the Mekong, admire the breathtaking scenery, and explore idyllic islands by bicycle. End with two nights at the gorgeous La Folie Lodge on Done Daeng Island, within eyesight of the mysterious Wat Phou Angkorian temple.

Day 1: Luang Prabang

Welcome to Luang Prabang! Check-in to your hotel to relax and refresh. Enjoy a welcome drink and have a brief introduction with your guide.

Day 2: Luang Prabang

Discover the charms of Luang Prabang with a leisurely walk around the old quarter. Start from the vibrant morning market, then on to the charming city main street and the National Museum. After, visit Wat Xieng Thong ‘The Temple of the Golden City’, considered the finest temple in Laos. For the finalé, embark on a scenic boat ride for a memorable sunset cruise along the Mekong river.

Day 3: Luang Prabang – Kuang Si Waterfall

takes us to the multi-tiered turquoise-coloured Kuang Si Waterfall, deemed one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Southeast Asia. Here you can also visit the Bears Rescue Centre to see rescued Asiatic bears. On our way back, get to see the fascinating world of Lao textiles come alive with a visit to Ock Pop Tok Weaving Centre. Stop for an ice cream made from real buffalo milk at the Buffalo Dairy! In the evening, see a bamboo presentation plus dinner and ‘baci’ ceremony at Bamboo Experience.

Day 4: Luang Prabang – Bolaven

Enjoy free time in the morning, then board your flight to Pakse, the gateway to Southern Laos. Begin your journey with a scenic drive through mountains and winding roads all the way up to the Bolaven Plateau. Meet a local coffee farmer and a coffee expert who will take you for an exciting off-road driving adventure in an old army Jeep into the coffee plantation.

Day 5: Bolaven – Wat Phou – Don Khong

Experience being surrounded with verdant jungles and rolling mountains, at Tad Fane the
twin waterfalls. Visit the ancient ruins of Wat Phou Tok mountain temple, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, noted to be one the oldest archaeological sites in Laos. Continue the scenic route until we reach Don Khong, the largest island of Si Phan Don (which means ‘4,000 islands” in Lao).

Day 6: The 4,000 Islands – Mekong Cruise

Explore an archipelago of islands where time swings slowly by. Feel the fresh breeze while sailing along the Mekong River, passing fisherman villages and eventually reaching Don Khone where we will disembark. On the island, enjoy a bicycle ride and see some iconic sights such as the old French locomotive and Railway Bridge. Then, we will visit the spectacular Liphi Waterfalls, a collection of powerful falls spilling down in many angles branching out to join the Mekong River. Cruise to Ban Nakasang then transfer back to Don Khong.

Day 7: Don Khong – Pakse

Continue your adventure with a visit to mighty Khone Phapheng waterfall and the village of Ban Khiet Ngong located in Xe Pian National Protected Area, an extensive wetland home to rare wildlife species. Enjoy a short climb to the top of Phou Asa mountain where mysterious columns made out of stacks of plate-like rocks stands proudly as if protecting an unseen structure, believed to be a temple. Return to Pakse to end an adventurous day and feast on a farewell Sindad dinner (Lao BBQ).

Day 1: Arrive Luang Prabang

On arrival at Luang Prabang International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Time permitting; your half day city tour begins with a visit to the Royal Palace Museum, which hosts a range of interesting artifacts. We then head to the magnificent Wat Xiengthong with its roofs sweeping low to the ground, which represents classical Laotian architecture. We also have time to visit the impressive stupa of Wat Visoun and the shrines of Wat Aham and Wat Mai.

Day 2: Luang Prabang

The day starts with a visit to the Big Brother Mouse shop to select some books for the village visit. Head north by car along route 13, before taking an unpaved road to Ban Khia Luang village. We then have ample time to visit the school, play with the kids and watch them enjoy their new books. Take some time to explore the rest of the village, where you can see weaving and visit the local temple. Stop for lunch at the village, which can either be a western picnic lunch, or traditional Lao food such as sticky rice, laap and fresh vegetables cooked by the villagers. After lunch we say good bye to the village and drive to Ban Khoklin, which takes us through some beautiful scenery of mountains and paddy fields. At Ban Khoklin we then board a private boat down the Nam Ou river for 30 minutes to Pak Ou Caves, two linked caves crammed with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes left by pilgrims. Continue down the Mekong River back to Luang Prabang.

Day 3: Luang Prabang

Today we cross the Mekong River by boat, to the picturesque village of Ban Chan, a pottery village. We then visit the morning Phousi Market, where you will see such diverse offerings as dried buffalo skin, local tea and saltpeter among the chickens, vegetables and hill-tribe weavings. Laos is also known for its traditional crafts, and today you will visit local villages of Lao ethnic minority groups at Ban Ouay, a Hmong village, Ban Ou a Laoloum village and Ban Thapene, Khmu villages. This then takes us to the beautiful Khuang Si Waterfall where you can cool off with a refreshing swim in the pools or walk along the forest trails. We then return to Luang Prabang by late afternoon.

Day 4: Luang Prabang – Xiengkhuang

Today, we make the day’s drive through the country side and view wonderful natural scenery before arriving Xiengkhuang. The journey will give you plenty of opportunities for photos and we will visit hill tribe villages. Upon arrival, visit Site 1 of the Plain of Jars, an impressive archaeological site where hundreds of large stone jars are scattered all over the plateau.

Day 5: Xieng Khuang – Plain of Jars

This morning we have time to visit the interesting Central Market in Phonsavan, visit the MAG exhibition and Site 2 of the Plain of Jars before taking a short scenic trek to Site 3 via a Tai Dam and Lao Leum village. Following lunch, visit the old capital of Muang Khoun and the nearby villages, home to the Hmong hill tribe and the Tai Dam people.

Day 6: Xiengkhuang – Vang Vieng

Transfer to Vang Vieng by road, arriving there mid afternoon.

Day 7: Vang Vieng – Vientiane

As part of our half day tour of Vang Vieng, explore the famous caves of Tham Jang, which was once used by the local people as a hideout from Chinese invaders. We also cross the river to Ban Huai Ngai. A very pleasant village where we can explore the different lifestyles of the locals. Following lunch we head south to Vientiane, where we arrive before sunset.

Day 8: Vientiane

After breakfast, explore Vientiane capital by visiting the major sights. Start your tour with a visit to the oldest Wat Sisaket with thousands of miniature Buddha statues. We then former royal temple of Wat Prakeo, which previously housed the famous Emerald Buddha Image. En route to Lao’s national precious heritage, the famous and sacred structure of That Luang Stupa, you will have the opportunity to take some pictures of the imposing Patuxay Monument, which is well known as Vientiane’s own Arc de Triumph. In the afternoon we continue visiting the rest of Vientiane by foot, including Wat Ong Tue, Wat Inpeng and Wat Haisok. We pass by the major shopping area continuing to the Vientiane Central Market of Talad Sao and Talad Kouadin where various goods are displayed for sale; including fresh food, household goods, souvenirs, textiles, gold, silver and antiques.

Day 9: Vientiane – Pakse – 4000 Islands

You will be transferred to the airport early this morning for your flight to Pakse. On arrival in Pakse, we drive south to Champassak. Visit the fascinating pre-Angkorian ruins of Wat Phu, one of Southeast Asia’s most dramatically situated temples. We have time to explore these intriguing Khmer ruins, which are perched at the base of Mount Phu Kao. Following lunch, we continue our journey by road and long tail boat to the 4000 Islands area, where you have the rest of the day to relax.

Day 10: 4000 Islands

After an early morning breakfast, we explore Khone Island. Here we begin by re-tracing the French colonial-past at Ban Khone, where some old colonial houses and glimpse the first Lao railway with its own locomotive. Continue our exploration of the area of the 4000 islands by boat. Visit the beautiful Liphi waterfall, also known as the Samphamith, which forms a natural border between Lao and Cambodia. We return to Ban Nakasang and drive to the famous waterfall of Khone Phapeng. The largest waterfall in South East Asia, also known as the ‘Niagara of the east’.

Day 11: 4000 Islands –Tad Lo – Pakse

This morning we leave Khone Island and you will be met and taken by road west into the Bolevean Plateau. The Bolevean Plateau is known for its cooler temperature being located high above the Mekong Valley. The area is famous for its many waterfalls, and the most beautiful of these falls, Tad Fan. Tad Fan waterfall is spectacular with twin waterfalls plummeting into a deep gorge surrounded by flourishing vegetation. A trip to the plateau provides a refreshing break from the heat and allows you to observe the cultivation of rich coffee, tea, cardamom, bananas, and other crops that can be seen en route. In the afternoon we arrive at Tad Lo, home to another scenic waterfall and numerous ethnic minority groups. We visit the villages of Alak, Nge, and Katu before returning to Pakse.

Day 12: Depart Pakse

Depending on your flight, you may have time at leisure before you will be transferred to Luang Pakse International Airport.
