Day 1: Cairns – Malanda

Travel to the Atherton Tablelands and Lake Barrine before today’s highlight, Historic Village Herberton, with over 50 original buildings, interior displays plus thousands of antique items. Stay tonight in Malanda.

Day 2: Chillagoe – Georgetown

An early start sees us travel to Mount Surprise for lunch. Then board the ‘Savannahlander’ train as it tracks towards Einasleigh. There is time for a beer in the pub before the train departs for Forsayth. From here we travel to Georgetown.

Hotel: Latara Motel

Day 3: Georgetown – Karumba

Enjoy a morning ‘smoko’ on the shore of Croydon’s Lake Belmore. In historic Normanton see landmarks like the ‘Purple Pub’, Burns Philp General Store and a replica of Krys, the 8.63m crocodile. Continue to Karumba for a Gulf sunset cruise.

Day 4: Karumba – Adel’s Grove

Travel back through Normanton this morning and visit Burke & Wills Camp #119. Cross the vast ‘Plains of Promise’ to Leichhardt Falls and Burketown. Then it’s on to Adel’s Grove.

Hotel: Adels Grove – Basic cabins, 2 nights

Day 5: Lawn Hill National Park

Spend a relaxed day enjoying Lawn Hill National Park, an oasis set amid the spinifex clad Constance Range. Enjoy a cruise of Lawn Hill Gorge, a haven for bird and wildlife.

Day 6: Adel’s Grove – Normanton

Visit Riversleigh Fossil Fields, recording the history of Australia’s mega-fauna. Enjoy lunch at Gregory, then call in at remote Burke & Wills Roadhouse, before travelling on to Normanton.

Day 7: Normanton – Cobbold Gorge

Take the Gulflander RM93 train through the savannah landscape and across the Norman River to Critters Camp. Visit Georgetown and Forsayth en route to Cobbold Gorge.

Day 8: Cobbold Gorge – Undara

Cruise Cobbold Gorge through Hampstead sandstone cliffs. Visit the famous Undara Lava Tubes. There’s campfire entertainment after dinner, then retire to faithfully restored antique rail carriages.

Hotel: Undara Lava Lodge

Day 9: Undara – Cairns

Breakfast in the bush, then take a tour of the 190,000 year old lava tubes, a geological spectacle. Visit Ravenshoe and the Atherton Tableland’s Curtain Fig Tree. Descend to Cairns where your adventure comes to an end.

Cape York Frontier

Your Cape York Frontier starts en route to the Daintree rainforest. See historic Cooktown and the farm district of Lakeland. In Quinkan Country view Aboriginal art. Explore Lakefield National Park, the gold town of Coen and the Archer River. Delve into Weipa and go off-road in Bramwell. Explore ancient Cape York and cruise to Thursday Island.

Day 1: Cairns – Cooktown

Your adventure begins on the coastal route to the Daintree Rainforest. Cross the Daintree River by cable ferry to Cape Tribulation. Next is the rugged 4WD Bloomfield Track (conditions permitting). Cross the Bloomfield River near the Aboriginal community of Wujal Wujal. You’ll visit Lion’s Den Hotel and eerie Black Mountain en route to Cooktown.

Day 2: Cooktown – Musgrave

Travel through the agricultural district of Lakeland to Quinkan Country near Laura. Climb the sandstone escarpment at Split Rock to view Aboriginal rock art dating more than 13,000 years depicting traditional activities and culture (suitable footwear and reasonable fitness required; uneven surfaces). Discover Lakefield National Park’s waterlily covered billabongs and teaming wildlife. The day ends at Musgrave’s century old Telegraph Station.

Day 3: Musgrave – Weipa

Cross the Great Dividing Range to visit the old gold mining town of Coen. Cross the Archer River and head to the bauxite mining town of Weipa, where you can enjoy a sublime sunset over the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Day 4: Weipa – Bramwell Station

This morning you have ample time to explore the township of Weipa or join a Wildlife Eco River Cruise (own expense). After lunch (own expense), we head to our overnight accommodation on a true blue Aussie cattle station.

Day 5: Bramwell – Cape York

Head north along part of the Old Telegraph Track to Fruit Bat Falls for lunch. Relax, swim, and enjoy this unique area with its enchanting waterfall. Cross the mighty Jardine River by cable ferry, then travel on to the northern-most settlements on mainland Australia.

Hotel: Seisia Holiday Village, 2 nights

Day 6: Cape York – Somerset

Stand at the very top of mainland Australia. We then visit Somerset (conditions permitting), once the home of the famous Jardine family. We have lunch on palm fringed Anchorage Beach overlooking the Albany Passage.

Day 7: Seisia – Thursday Island – Cairns

Board a boat to cruise to Thursday Island, in the Torres Straits for a guided tour. Later, transfer by ferry to Horn Island to board your aircraft to fly over the Great Barrier Reef to Cairns Airport, ending your fascinating safari of adventure and discovery in Australia’s far north.

Day 1: Welcome to Cairns – Port Douglas

On arrival at Cairns Airport (flights anytime), you’ll be transferred to your resort.

Day 2: Cape Tribulation & Daintree

Enjoy a guided walk at Mossman Gorge and then cruise on the Daintree River, to spot wildlife and unique plants. Enjoy lunch in a rainforest setting and take a walk on Cape Tribulation Beach. Wind through the rainforest of the Alexandra Range to a lookout for views out to the Coral Sea.

Day 3: Great Barrier Reef – Cairns

An experience of a lifetime today – cruise to an underwater world that is a kaleidoscope of colour and brilliance on an Outer Great Barrier Reef Cruise. Dive, snorkel or just stay dry and explore the stunning reef from the comfort of a semi-submersible craft. Watch the fish feeding from a unique underwater viewing platform and enjoy a tropical buffet lunch before heading to Cairns for the next 3 nights.

Day 4: Kuranda

On arrival at Freshwater Station, board the Kuranda Scenic Rail for the journey to enjoy breathtaking views across the cane fields of Cairns, to the tropical rainforest of Kuranda. Wind through hand-hewn tunnels, across bridges and curves, all the time appreciating what an amazing engineering feat it is. In Kuranda, it’s time to explore this fascinating village. Later, board the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway for your 7.5km journey over and through World Heritage protected rainforest to Smithfield. This iconic experience showcases ancient rainforest and spectacular views with time at both Red Peak and Barron Falls Stations for education and interpretation.

Day 5: Cairns ‘Free Time’

Relax and unwind or explore and discover many hidden gems.

Day 6: Farewell from Cairns

Your Short Break concludes this morning. Make your own way to Cairns Airport (flights anytime).

Today you have the freedom to enjoy the Gold Coast in your own style. Nature lovers may head to Mt. Tamborine, foodies explore the growing culinary culture or those needing relaxation just stroll down to the sand and salt of Surfers Paradise Beach.

Enjoy a sneak peek into the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. See how AAT Kings works with the Wildlife Warriors to support the koala rehabilitation project at the hospital, the country’s largest and busiest wildlife facility. This afternoon the ferry will take you across to the World Heritage listed K’gari, also known as Fraser Island.

A day of discovery lies ahead as your 4WD tour takes you for a ride around the island’s must-see sites. Visit Lake McKenzie, ringed with magnificent white sandy beaches. Visit Langmorn Station, a fully operational family run cattle station. Meet the Creed family and take a guided tour of the property including the original family homestead, built in 1873. Enjoy afternoon tea in the garden in the company of the pet kangaroo! Cross the Tropic of Capricorn as you arrive in Rockhampton, the beef capital of Australia. Spend some free time in Kuranda, the ‘village in the rainforest’, before travelling on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Board a high-speed catamaran today and cruise out to the iconic Great Barrier Reef, the only living organism that can be seen from the moon.
