In the afternoon we will go to the small twons, were given their name in the early colonial period because the Spaniards decided to paint their homes in white. Nowadays “white towns” is a part of Nicaraguan folklore. The interesting fact is that each town has its own specialty when it comes to art, food and tradition. In the past, these towns were known as “witch doctor’s towns”, since a lot of the people were shamans and did that for a living. Nowadays, there are not many witch doctors left, but some people suspect that certain individuals in the towns are still devoted to these practices. There is a good balance between the rainy and dry seasons and this combines to make this a beautiful area full of fruits and trees. The landscape is very attractive and people are humble and friendly. We take today’s tour through these towns making strategic stops in the most interesting places. We learn how people make bamboo baskets and furniture and we go by Somoza and Sandino’s native towns. We’ll do shopping in San Juan de Oriente and Catarina (pottery). Here you find beautiful arts and crafts and nurseries with beautiful flowers. We will also see the view from Catarina of the surrounding water and volcano landscape and get to know the Nicaraguan’s character, personality and way of life.

Only ten minutes from the entrance we will be able to visit the environmental center, a museum where we can see a model of the park and also see paintings of Nicaraguan artists relating to the history of the volcano. We’ll Learn about the tectonic plates and volcanic regions of the planet and get to know about the flora and fauna of this wildlife refuge. We will continue our trip to the summit of the volcano, where we will get out of our vehicle and walk the few steps to see the Santiago crater, active since 1946. We will also have time to explore the surrounding area and see more volcanic formations, learn about the Aratinga Strenua (amazing birds living in the toxic crater walls) as well as the history of the Spanish priests who explored the volcano and the superstitious beliefs held by the natives who inhabited the area. Then We will continue to León City and take the lunch in a local restaurant.

Hotel: Convento Hotel, 2 nights

Day 14: Leon

The colonial city of Leon was founded by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in the year 1524 next to Lake Xolotlan and the active Momotombo volcano. There were important indigenous towns in the area. The city was actually built next to the town known as Imabite but in the year 1610 it was moved to its current location after being destroyed by a series of eruptions from the Momotombo volcano and the city was basically buried. That is why the city is called the Central American Pompey. We will begin with the city of Leon to see the main churches including the monumental cathedral, the largest in Central America, located at the main square. We will also see the birdhouse of Ruben Dario, the “Ortiz Gurdian” art gallery and the “El Convento” hotel and its colonial architecture. Meeting up with a Local Specialist this morning, you’ll seemingly step into another world as you enter the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. Home to a variety of different eco-systems, you’ll learn about the thousands of different plant and animals species that thrive in this area, many of which only exist right here. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears poised for the sounds of hummingbirds, howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, and if you’re really lucky, the Quetzal bird. Costa Rica has a big reputation as a nature lover’s paradise, and this place won’t let you down. Leaving the forest on a real nature high you’ll have time to relax this afternoon, or join our ‘El Trapiche’ Optional Experience tour where you’ll get to visit sugarcane, banana, orange and coffee plantations.

Day 4: Monteverde – Arenal

Enjoy the ride this morning as you travel past cattle ranches and coffee plantations on your way to Arenal Volcano National Park. One of the shining jewels in Costa Rica’s already bedazzling crown, the national park is best known for its bubbling hot springs and geothermal activity, wide variety of wildlife and of course the sleeping giant, Arenal Volcano. As exciting as this all is, your attention upon arrival will likely be taken up by your gorgeous and secluded resort, nestled on the banks of the San Carlos River. Boasting outdoor pools, a butterfly garden, botanical gardens growing all manner of fruit trees and tame iguanas roaming the grounds, you’ll likely feel like you’ve entered a little corner of heaven. Settle in and enjoy relaxing in paradise this afternoon, before joining your fellow travellers for an included dinner at the resort restaurant this evening.

Hotel: Tilajari Resort, 3 nights

Day 5: Arenal Full Day Sightseeing

A guided hike through Arenal 1968 is first up on today’s action packed agenda. Denoting its name from the year Arenal Volcano created its most catastrophic eruption, this private reserve gives you the chance to walk through lava fields, observe leftover lava rocks and boulders and walk through forest land for wonderful views of both the volcano and Arenal Lake, the largest lake in Costa Rica. After a browse around La Fortuna town and a spot of lunch, this afternoon you’ll then head to the famous Arenal Hanging Bridges Park. Meeting up with a Local Specialist, you’ll ‘sky walk’ your way through the jungle canopy, testing your head for heights on the 6 suspension bridges whilst spotting a whole manner of birdlife. This evening and to round off an incredible day, let your worries and stresses drift away as you relax in the mineral rich pools of a hot springs resort.

Day 6: Arenal Sightseeing and Free Time

Another day, and another chance to explore this natural wonderland. Your morning will begin with a safari float down the Peñas Blancas River, where you’ll join a Local Specialist and get to experience the peaceful tranquility of the rainforest whilst looking for monkeys, sloths, iguanas, caimans and tropical birds. On the way you’ll visit a local family who live and work on the river, gaining an appreciation for how connected the people of Costa Rica are to the natural environment. Back at your resort and with the afternoon free, enjoy going for a dip in the pool, play tennis, or join a horseback riding excursion through the rainforest.

Day 7: Arenal – San Jose

Transfer back to San Jose International Airport will be at 12:00 PM approximately or extend your holiday to Guanacaste.
