Day 2: Budapest

Budapest is a treasure trove of architectural wonders, from Gothic to Baroque; Neoclassical to Art Nouveau, but also full of history, a food capital and surprisingly rich in thermal waters. Discover all of this and more during the guided city tour this afternoon, then maybe join our evening optional excursion.

Day 3: Budapest – Bratislava, Slovakia – Vienna, Austria

Journey northwest and cross the border into neighbouring Slovakia. Stop in Bratislava, its intriguing capital on the banks of the Danube, to explore the medieval Old Town. Continue west and enter Austria, arriving in magical Vienna.

Days 4: Vienna

Enjoy two full days in one of Europe’s most beloved capitals. Join the included city sightseeing tour for a great introduction to the major sights: the State Opera, Parliament, the ornate Rathaus (Town Hall), and views of the Hofburg imperial Palace from Heroes’ Square. You’ll have plenty time to discover Vienna on your own, or choose from our wonderful selection of optional excursions.

Day 6: Vienna – Danube River Cruise – Salzburg

From Krems, situated along the banks of the Danube and surrounded by hills and vineyards, marvel at the stunning scenery as you embark your ship for a delightful Danube River Cruise through the legendary Wachau Valley to Spitz. You might enjoy an optional excursion to visit the magnificent Benedictine Melk Abbey. Upon arrival in Salzburg, see some of the highlights of the historical centre, including the Domplatz, the Festival Hall with the former Horse Trough, and, of course, the charming Getreidegasse, where Mozart was born!

Depart Salzburg and travel into the heart of the Bavarian Alps for a guided visit of the world’s most famous fairytale castle: King Ludwig ii’s incomparable Neuschwanstein, inspiration behind Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle. Wander through the lavish apartments and staterooms, and hear the legends about what drove King Ludwig “mad.” Afterward, continue to Munich, Germany’s “Secret Capital,” where you’ll spend two nights

Day 1: Arrive In Amsterdam, Holland

Welcome to Amsterdam! At 6 pm, meet your Tour Director and travelling companions for a welcome dinner at your hotel.

Day 2: Amsterdam

Meet your Local Guide and hear about the fascinating history of the 700-year-old capital during a leisurely Canal Cruise. Admire the patrician mansions and the gabled facades; the “Golden Bend,” the most prestigious part of the Herengracht and a monument to the Golden Age; the Stopera, Amsterdam’s proud concert hall; the Hermitage, a branch museum of the Hermitage Museum of St. Petersburg; and much more. Also visit a major Diamond centre. For those who wish to experience Dutch life in the countryside, an optional excursion is available to picturebook Volendam, a fishing village at the former Zuiderzee, including visits to a working windmill, a clogmaker, a cheese farm, plus dinner.

Day 3: Amsterdam – Cologne, Germany – Koblenz

A smooth drive past the Dutch region best known as the setting of A Bridge Too Far brings you to the Rhine Valley. Stop in Cologne and see the awesome twin-spired gothic cathedral. Overnight in Koblenz, where the Mosel River flows into the Rhine River. Why not join an optional excursion to famous Marksburg castle, from where you have spectacular views of the river below?

Day 4: Koblenz – Rudesheim – Wiesbaden

Today is dedicated to a romantic Rhine Cruise, including lunch, along the most scenic part of the Rhine River. Sit back and relax while you pass castle-crested cliffs, terraced vineyards, and trim, half-timbered towns. Arrive in Rudesheim, capital of the Riesling wine, for a traditional Wine Tasting, before proceeding to your hotel in Wiesbaden.

Day 5: Wiesbaden – Rothenburg – Munich

Join your Tour Director for a walk through medieval, walled Rothenburg. Time to shop for Christmas ornaments, for which this town is famous. Continue to Munich, capital of Bavaria. Visit Marienplatz with its New and Old Town Halls, followed by the famous Hofbrauhaus, dating back to 1589. Free time for dinner.

Day 6: Munich – Salzburg, Austria

Drive eastwards, following the Bavarian Alps to Austria. Arrive in Salzburg, where your Local Guide takes you for a walking tour through the historic centre. Admire exquisite Mirabell Gardens, the Great Festival Hall, St. Peter’s Monastery, and magnificent Residenz Square, where some scenes of The Sound of Music movie were filmed. Also see Mozart’s birthplace in the charming Getreidegasse. Time to browse through the downtown market. You may wish to join an optional excursion to spectacular Berchtesgaden and Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest.

Day 7: Salzburg – Innsbruck – Vaduz, Liechtenstein – Lucerne, Switzerland

A scenic drive brings you to Innsbruck, tucked amid the Alps, and capital of Tyrol. Join your Tour Director for a pleasant walk through quaint medieval lanes to Emperor Maximilian’s Golden Roof. Next is Vaduz, capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein. Time to buy your stamps or other souvenirs before continuing to Lucerne in the heart of Switzerland.

Day 8: Lucerne

During your walking tour, admire Thorwaldsen’s impressive Lion Monument, dedicated to the fallen Swiss Guards who protected the Royal House of France during the French Revolution, and the ornate patrician houses lining the cobblestone streets of the walled Old Town. Then, cross the famous covered Chapel Bridge to the Jesuit Church. Afterwards, shop for Swiss watches and chocolate. Tonight, a farewell dinner has been prepared at a local restaurant, the best way to say auf Wiedersehen, Lucerne.

Day 9: Lucerne – Zurich Airport

Morning transfer to Zurich Airport in time for home-bound flights leaving no earlier than 10 am.

Day 1: London – Paris

Leaving the bright city lights of London behind us, we cross the English Channel by ferry from Dover to Calais, travelling across the World War I battlefields w here so many brave souls lost their lives. We catch a glimpse of the Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge before arriving in Paris. Later, we join our Travel Director and travel companions for a Welcome Reception including dinner and drinks and an evening drive to embrace the energy of this vibrant city.

Day 2: Paris

Join a ‘Local Specialist’ for a drive along the Champs Élysées to the Arc de Triomphe and view the Eiffel Tower. View Notre Dame Cathedral and enjoy a stroll through the Latin Quarter. Perhaps pay a visit to the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, stroll along the Seine admiring the exquisite work of street artists or consider attending one of the city’s famous colourful cabaret shows.

Day 3: Paris – Amboise – Bordeaux

Journey through France’s Loire Valley stopping to see the royal château at Amboise, where King François I hosted Leonard da Vinci. Continue south through one of France’s most renowned wine regions, arriving in Bordeaux, celebrated for its centuries-old trading heritage and extraordinary architecture. Spend the evening exploring its historical centre or amble along the Garonne and watch how the 18th-century Place de la Bourse glitters across the river at night.

This morning, we delve into the heady days of la Belle Époque in the glitzy seaside resort of Biarritz, an elegant retreat for aristocrats for centuries. Later head to Pamplona, perhaps most famous for its annual Running of the Bulls Festival.

Day 5: Pamplona – Madrid

Head to the heart of Spain this morning and its lofty capital, Madrid. Upon arrival, enjoy an included visit to the Prado Museum and admire the incredible works of Rubens, Goya and El Greco. This morning, perhaps take to the waters of Retiro Park, visit the Mercado de San Miguel to indulge in the delicious flavours of Spain, or join an Optional Experience to the imperial city of Toledo. Day 7: Madrid – Barcelona

Driving towards Catalonia and the shores of the Mediterranean, we pass Guadalajara and the Gorges of Jalón and Aragón en route to vibrant Barcelona, where we will spend the next two nights delving into the intoxicating charm of this cultural and artistic powerhouse.

Day 8: Barcelona

Join a ‘Local Specialist’ today and delight in the whimsical world of Gaudí, whose characteristic Art Nouveau architecture is dotted throughout the city. See his unfinished masterpiece La Sagrada Familia, before spending the rest of the day embracing the energy of Barcelona. Pay tribute to Columbus and his brave exploration of the New World, wander down to La Barceloneta for some tasty tapas treats, or ramble up Las Ramblas watching street performers entertain crowds. This evening, you could choose to witness Spanish passion, power and drama unfold at an unforgettable foot-stomping flamenco evening including a delicious Spanish buffet.

Day 9: Barcelona – Perfumery Excursion – Cannes

From the rugged Costa Brava to the stylish shores of the French Riviera, we travel through the South of France, stopping to ‘Dive Into Culture’ during a guided visit to Fragonard Perfumery where we’ll learn how fragrances are crafted. Later, we arrive in the glamorous town of Cannes, home to the famous film festival.

Day 10: Cannes

Tread in the footsteps of showbiz royalty, savouring a full day at leisure in Cannes. Wander along La Croisette against the backdrop of the Mediterranean and Estérel Hills, shop on Rue Meynadier or consider joining an Optional Experience to the medieval hilltop town of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, renowned for its museums and galleries.

Day 11: Cannes – Monaco – Pisa – Florence

Travel along the sophisticated Cote d’Azur to the Principality of Monaco, where you’ll see the Royal Palace and the cathedral where Princess Grace is buried. Cross into Italy and pass Genoa, the birthplace of Columbus, before arriving in Pisa to admire its Leaning Tower and Baptistery, the largest in Italy. This evening we arrive in the Renaissance city of Florence where we will spend the night.

Join a ‘Local Specialist’ for a guided walking tour of one of the cultural capitals of the world. Visit Piazza della Signoria, once the political hub of the city, and enjoy an included visit to the Academy of Fine Arts to see Michelangelo’s statue of David. We depart Florence for the mystical city of Assisi later, and tread in the footsteps of St. Francis who was born and laid to rest in this hilltop town. Day 13: Assisi – Pompeii – Sorrento

Travelling south towards the deep blue waters of the Bay of Naples, we stop in Pompeii and join a ‘Local Specialist’ to explore the tragic history of this ancient Roman settlement that was lost for centuries under ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The stylish seaside resort of Sorrento is our stop for the next two nights. Embrace la dolce vita as we ‘Connect With Locals’ over a family ‘Be My Guest’ dinner featuring traditional flavours.

Day 14: Excursion to the Isle Of Capri

Cross the waters of the bay to the enchanting Isle of Capri and explore its Piazzetta in the company of a ‘Local Specialist’ who will take you on a guided tour.

The grand boulevards and ancient history of Rome await as we travel north from Sorrento to the ‘Eternal City’, crossing the gold and green countryside of Lazio.

Join a ‘Local Specialist’ to delve into the centre of Christianity – the Vatican City. The rest of the day is yours to explore the city’s history and culture that span almost two millennia. Sit on the Spanish Steps, shop up a storm on the Via del Corso or toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain to secure your speedy return to Rome.

Day 17: Rome – Venice

We journey over the scenic Apennine Mountains, past Bologna and Padua to Venice, the ‘Queen of the Adriatic’ where we’ll spend the next two nights at a superb hotel on Lido Island.

Day 18: Venice

‘Dive Into Culture’ and witness the centuries-old tradition of Venetian glassmaking. Glide through the city’s bustling canals by private launch, arriving at St. Mark’s Square, the gateway to Venice. See St. Mark’s Basilica, the ornate Doges Palace and Bridge of Sighs. The rest of today is yours to enjoy the sights and sounds of this Byzantine treasure. Cross the Rialto bridge, enjoy a sunset over the Grand Canal with a Campari Spritz or ascend the Campanile for panoramic views.

Day 19: Venice – Vienna

A scenic drive from Italy to Austria takes us through the Carnic Alps to the imperial capital of Vienna where we’ll spend the next two nights exploring a city famous for its musical heritage and elegance.

Day 20: Vienna

Join your ‘Local Specialist’ this morning to explore the sights, including views of the famous Opera House, Stadtpark, Parliament, Imperial Boulevards and Hofburg Palace, once home to the powerful Habsburg Dynasty. Spend the rest of the day delving into Vienna’s cosy coffee culture, perhaps visit the exquisite Schönbrunn Palace or discover the harmonies of the world’s music capital, enjoying one of the city’s many musical performances.

Day 21: Vienna – Salzburg – Munich

Today we explore the tales of the Von Trapp family on a sightseeing tour of Salzburg with a ‘Local Specialist’ before continuing to the Bavarian capital of Munich, where we will spend the night.

Day 22: Munich – Liechtenstein – Lucerne

Munich’s Marienplatz and Glockenspiel take centre stage this morning during an orientation tour of the city. We leave Germany for Switzerland, stopping in the Liechtenstein capital of Vaduz. Our home for the next two nights is one of Trafalgar’s ‘Stays With Stories’ – the Grand Hotel Europe, featuring a scenic lakeside and alpine backdrop.

Day 23: Lucerne

Pay tribute to the brave Swiss Guards who lost their lives defending King Louis XVI in the French Revolution and see the famous mournful Lion Monument. Walk along the wooden Chapel Bridge and admire its decorative ceilings. Then spend the rest of the day admiring the colourful façades of the Old Town or join an Optional Experience to one of the surrounding peaks.

Day 24: Lucerne – Heidelberg – Rhine Cruise – Rhineland

View the ruins of Heidelberg Castle perched above the Neckar River and board a relaxing cruise down the mighty Rhine from St. Goar to Boppard – fantasy castles and hillside vineyards line your scenic journey. This evening, we stay at one of Trafalgar’s ‘Stays With Stories’ – Bellevue hotel, located close to the Rhine River.

Day 25: Rhineland – Cologne – Amsterdam

Admire the tall twin Gothic spires of the Cologne Cathedral this morning, before crossing into the Netherlands and on to Amsterdam where we spend the next two nights. Sit under the leafy canopy at Leidseplein indulging in Dutch beer and kroketten, hire a bike and hit the city’s tree-lined streets or bask in the warm glow and gezelligheid of one of the city’s renowned bruin cafés.

Day 26: Amsterdam

Enjoy an orientation of Amsterdam and spend the rest of the day exploring the city on foot, by bike or tram. Consider delving into the tragic story of Anne Frank, admire the works of Van Gogh or people-watch in Vondelpark. This evening enjoy a Farewell Dinner with your travel companions on board a glass-top boat. Cruise through the city’s canals looking up at the centuries-old gabled façades for which Amsterdam is so famous.

Day 27: Amsterdam – London

Drive through the peaceful landscapes of Belgium and France to Calais and cross to England by ferry. See the famous White Cliffs of Dover en route to London, where your memorable journey through Europe comes to an end.

Day 1: Munich – Tegernsee – Zell Am See

We’ll meet with the group in Munich this morning before moving on to Tegernsee – where we’ll get acquainted with the picturesque lake on a boat trip. Our next stop will be Zell am See, which is filled with marvellous alpine scenery (and comes complete with another shimmering blue lake). Tonight, we’ll get to know each other a little better over a group dinner. Accommodation: Hotel Steinerwirt 1493.

Day 2: Zell Am See

After this morning’s breakfast, we’ll roll up our sleeves for an included cookery class – where a local expert will demonstrate how to make Austrian delicacies kaspressknödel (cheese dumplings) using fresh farm produce. When we’ve learnt the tricks of the trade, we’ll try our hand at making the delicious treats ourselves – with the chance to taste the fruits of our labour afterwards.

Day 3: Zell Am See – Berchtesgaden – Salzburg

Today we’ll head back over the border into Germany for a stop at Berchtesgaden. While we’re here, we’ll visit Hitler’s famous Eagle’s Nest, which is perched high at the top of a mountain peak overlooking the quaint Bavarian town. After wandering the very rooms where Hitler and other Nazi party officials entertained foreign diplomats and held banquets, we’ll travel back down the mountain toward our next stop: Salzburg.

Day 4: Salzburg

Today you’ll be free to experience Salzburg’s fairytale magic and explore its spectacular Baroque sights at your own pace. The birthplace of Mozart, the impressive Mirabell Palace and Gardens, Salzburg Cathedral and St Peter’s Abbey are all great places to start! This evening, we’ll come together to enjoy a group dinner and Mozart concert at the lofty Salzburg Fortress.

Day 5: Salzburg – Schafbergbahn – Schnitzhof Alm – Tauplitz

Today we’ll board an old-fashioned cogwheel train and take the SchafbergBahn up to the top of the Schafberg mountain – taking in some fantastic views of the Salzkammergut region along the way. Then, it’s on to Schnitzhof Alm – a delightful 400-year-old cottage where traditional cheeses are made. After enjoying a cheese tasting session and included lunch we’ll continue to Tauplitz.

Day 6: Tauplitz – Admont – Amstetten – Dürnstein

After a breakfast in idyllic Tauplitz our road will take us to Admont Abbey, where a guided tour awaits. Exploring landmarks is thirsty work – so it’s only fitting that our next stop in Amstetten will be a local distillery! While we’re here, we’ll gain an insight into the cider-making process, and – of course – have a chance to taste it for ourselves. Tonight we’ll dine in Dürnstein, a photogenic town famous for its vineyards.

Day 7: Dürnstein – Spitz– Tulln An Der Donau – Vienna

Our final day together will see us travelling to Spitz, a wine-growing village in Lower Austria. After that, we’ll move on to Tulln an der Donau, a historic town teeming with parks and gardens, where you’ll be free to lunch where you choose. Then: our tour will come to a close in buzzing Vienna, with its captivating blend of Baroque architecture, imperial palaces and musical masterpieces.

Day 1: Arrive In Munich, Germany

Welcome to Munich! At 6 pm, meet your Tour Director and travelling companions for a welcome dinner at your hotel.

Day 2: Munich

Guided sightseeing of Germany’s “Secret Capital” features the Olympic Stadium, built for the 1972 Olympics; the 1,000-foot-high Olympic Tower; Nymphenburg Palace; and the historical Konigsplatz, used for Nazi rallies during World War II. Drive along the Ludwigstrasse, and see the Bavarian Arch of Triumph and Field Marshall Hall, a monumental loggia on the Odeonsplatz. Continue on foot and visit lively Marienplatz with the Old and the New Town Halls and the gothic Frauenkirche. An optional excursion is available to Linderhof Castle, one of King Ludwig’s prettiest castles, and a visit to the picturesque Passion Play town of Oberammergau.

Day 3: Munich – Neuschwanstein – Innsbruck, Austria – Salzburg

Drive into the garden-like landscapes of the Bavarian Alps and visit King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein Castle, which inspired Walt Disney, and enjoy magnificent views of the Alps from high up. Cross the border into the Tyrolean mountains to Innsbruck, capital of Tyrol and host of two Winter Olympic Games. Follow your Tour Director for a pleasant walk through the quaint medieval lanes to Emperor Maximilian’s Golden Roof. Time to shop for Innsbruck’s famous crystal, before continuing to Mozart’s hometown, Salzburg.

Day 4: Salzburg

This morning, an optional excursion to spectacular Berchtesgaden and Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest is available. Back in Salzburg, join your Local Guide for a walking tour through the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire Mirabell Gardens, the Great Festival Hall, St. Peter’s Monastery, and magnificent Residenz Square, where some scenes from The Sound of Music movie were filmed. Also visit Mozart’s Birthplace in the charming Getreidegasse.

Day 5: Salzburg – Mondsee – Vienna

Visit the Parish Church in Mondsee, which was used for the wedding scenes in The Sound of Music. Follow the Valley of the Danube River and board your ship for a leisurely River Cruise. Sit back and relax with Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake) as you sail along the most scenic section of the river. Arrive in Vienna, once the centre of the mighty Habsburg Empire. Tonight, you may wish to join an optional Heurigen evening.

Day 6: Vienna

Guided sightseeing features a visit to the baroque Belvedere Palace with its famous Klimt collection; a drive along the Ringstrasse with its magnificent buildings like the the Vienna State Opera; and a stop at the Hofburg Palace, winter residence of the Austrian Imperial family. Marvel at the impressive courtyards, famous Heldenplatz, and stunning St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Time to savour Sachertorte and watch the lively crowd in one of Vienna’s famous coffee houses. Choose from our selection optional possibilities.

Day 7: Vienna

Today, an optional excursion to Bratislava, capital of Slovakia, is available. End your holiday with a special treat: a private visit of Schonbrunn Palace, followed by a farewell dinner and a classical music concert, the best way to say auf Wiedersehen, Wien.

Day 8: Depart Vienna

Your holiday ends with breakfast this morning.

Day 1: Arrive Munich

Willkommen in München – which you will have an opportunity to explore before embarking on your lyrical sojourn through the Sound of Music. Join your Travel Director and fellow travellers for a memorable Welcome Reception to kick-start your leisurely meander through Germany and Austria.

Day 2: Munich

Embark on a morning orientation tour past some of the city’s most renowned sites, including the Opera House, Ludwigstrasse, Hofbräuhaus and Marienplatz, whose Glockenspiel delights visitors throughout the day with its re-enactment of 16th-century tales. Spend the rest of the day at leisure exploring the city’s Old Town or consider an Optional Experience to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, the first of the Nazi camps established in Germany. This evening, connect with the city’s rich beer heritage and consider a memorable night out at a local beer hall.

Day 3: Munich – Neuschwanstein Castle – Innsbruck

Journey to Neuschwanstein Castle, built as a retreat for shy King Ludwig II to retire from public life. Continue through Bavaria, arriving in Innsbruck. We dine at a local restaurant this evening.

Day 4: Innsbruck

The Tyrol mountains beckon today in this capital of Tyrol. We spend a leisurely day against a magnificent alpine backdrop, exploring the city’s iconic sights. Admire Emperor Maximilian I’s ornate Golden Roof, then maybe take a trip up the funicular for spectacular views, or see the Hofburg Palace. Admire the fascinating crystal installations and browse for precious gifts and souvenirs at the Swarovski Crystal Worlds Store.

Day 5: Innsbruck – Berchtesgaden – Salzburg

Spend a soul-stirring morning connecting with the astounding natural beauty of Berchtesgaden. Venture to Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 6: Salzburg Sightseeing – Mondsee – Villach

Join your ‘Local Specialist’ for a tour of the city’s iconic highlights including Getreidegasse, the Salzburg Cathedral, Mozart’s birthplace and many of the locations used in the film ‘The Sound of Music’. Leave the sounds of Salzburg behind for lakeside Mondsee, where you’ll visit Mondsee Abbey, the one-time Benedictine monastery that served as the church where Captain Von Trapp and Maria were married in film. This afternoon travel to Villach where we will ‘Connect With Locals’ and enjoy a Carinthian ‘Be My Guest’ dinner with the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood in the Monastery of Kloster Wernberg.

Day 7: Villach – Piber – Graz – Vienna

‘Dive Into Culture’ during a visit to the Lipizzaner Stud farm at Piber and gain insights into the breeding of the Spanish Riding School’s athletic white stallions. Later, stop in the town of Graz with its galleried courtyards and Renaissance squares. Finally arrive in the Austrian capital, Vienna, and check in to your hotel.

Day 8: Vienna

Enjoy an exclusive guided visit of the Habsburg royal collection of art at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, prior to admission of the general public. ‘Dive Into Culture’ and visit the Kunstkammer during this private insider visit. Later, your ‘Local Specialist’ will show you the city’s major landmarks and palaces during your included sightseeing tour. The magic continues with a walking tour through the oldest parts of the city. This evening, join your fellow travellers for a Farewell Dinner.

Day 9: Depart Vienna
