Day 2: Budapest

Budapest is a treasure trove of architectural wonders, from Gothic to Baroque; Neoclassical to Art Nouveau, but also full of history, a food capital and surprisingly rich in thermal waters. Discover all of this and more during the guided city tour this afternoon, then maybe join our evening optional excursion.

Day 3: Budapest – Bratislava, Slovakia – Vienna, Austria

Journey northwest and cross the border into neighbouring Slovakia. Stop in Bratislava, its intriguing capital on the banks of the Danube, to explore the medieval Old Town. Continue west and enter Austria, arriving in magical Vienna.

Days 4: Vienna

Enjoy two full days in one of Europe’s most beloved capitals. Join the included city sightseeing tour for a great introduction to the major sights: the State Opera, Parliament, the ornate Rathaus (Town Hall), and views of the Hofburg imperial Palace from Heroes’ Square. You’ll have plenty time to discover Vienna on your own, or choose from our wonderful selection of optional excursions.

Days 5: Vienna

Enjoy day at leisure.

Day 6: Vienna – Danube River Cruise – Salzburg

From Krems, situated along the banks of the Danube and surrounded by hills and vineyards, marvel at the stunning scenery as you embark your ship for a delightful Danube River Cruise through the legendary Wachau Valley to Spitz. You might enjoy an optional excursion to visit the magnificent Benedictine Melk Abbey. Upon arrival in Salzburg, see some of the highlights of the historical centre, including the Domplatz, the Festival Hall with the former Horse Trough, and, of course, the charming Getreidegasse, where Mozart was born!

Today is free to do as you please! Whether you’re interested in food, music, or history, your Tour Director can help you arrange independent activities or join one of our exciting optional excursions.

Day 8: Salzburg – Neuschwanstein, Germany – Munich

Depart Salzburg and travel into the heart of the Bavarian Alps for a guided visit of the world’s most famous fairytale castle: King Ludwig ii’s incomparable Neuschwanstein, inspiration behind Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle. Wander through the lavish apartments and staterooms, and hear the legends about what drove King Ludwig “mad.” Afterward, continue to Munich, Germany’s “Secret Capital,” where you’ll spend two nights

Day 1: Depart from London by Eurostar to Amsterdam

At 07:00, meet your Travel Director and transfer to London’s St. Pancras Station to board the high-speed Eurostar for a rail journey via the revolutionary Channel Tunnel. Once in Amsterdam, join your Travel Director in the evening for a Welcome Reception. Get to know your fellow guests during a cruise, along some of the many quaint, tree-lined canals. Admire the elegant merchant houses from the 16th and 17th centuries, their facades are a reflection of when trade flourished during Amsterdam’s Golden Age. Relax as you pass stunning gables, beautiful churches and the iconic Magere Brug, better known as the Skinny Bridge. Disembark and venture to Humphrey’s Restaurant for your Welcome Dinner.

Day 2: Würzburg

Relax with a scenic drive along the Rhine Valley to Würzburg. See the mighty Marienburg Fortress – the immense baroque palace of the Prince Bishops and one of the most important landmarks in Germany. On arrival, visit the imposing Würzburg Residenz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a Local Expert. Marvel at intricate decorations and lavish staterooms boasting with French, Austrian and Venetian influences.

Day 3: Rothenburg and Golden Prague

In the morning venture to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the most well-preserved town on the Romantic Road. Continue east to the Czech border, passing the town of Pilsen renowned for its beer, before reaching the Golden City of Prague. In the evening, perhaps take a river cruise through the heart of the city?

Day 4: Prague, City of a Hundred Spires

Join a Local Expert in the morning for guided sightseeing of one of the most beautiful and intact historic centres in Europe. Start with the 1,000-year-old Prague Castle, to admire the stained glass of St. Vitus Cathedral and enjoy amazing views over the Old Town. Walk on the famous Charles Bridge and through the Old Town. An artisan baker shows you how the Trdelník or traditional Czech chimney cakes are made, and enjoy a tasting. Finish in the Old Town Square where the mechanical antics of the Astronomical Clock’s glockenspiel delights onlookers each hour. Then, the city is all yours to explore with the rest of the day at leisure. Perhaps you may choose to rummage through the renowned antique shops or shop for the finest Bohemian crystal?

Day 5: Through Bohemia to Budapest

Start the day with a journey through the beautiful forested countryside of Bohemia. Journey through Slovakia and travel on to Hungary, following the River Danube to Budapest. Stand atop Gellért Hill where the colossal Liberty Statue stands in front of the Citadella watching over the city. Marvel at extensive panoramic views as you look out over the famous river dividing Buda and Pest – the two sides linked by the mighty Chain Bridge and the newer, elegant Elizabeth Bridge. In the evening, join a Local Expert to enjoy a scenic dinner cruise and take in the city’s nighttime beauty as you float along the Danube.

Day 6: The flavours of Budapest

Stroll through the alleys of the Old Town of Buda and admire sweeping views from the Fisherman’s Bastion with a Local Expert. Drive along the beautiful Andrassy Avenue to Heroes’ Square. Then, enjoy free time to browse the boutiques of Vaci Street. Continue your travels, past the eagle overlooking the town of Tatabanya, to the Austrian border and through pleasant farming country to the imperial capital of Vienna.

Day 7: Vienna and the Habsburgs

In the morning, there is the option to join a private tour of Maria Theresa’s Schonbrunn Palace & formal gardens. Later, get your camera ready for a drive around the famous Ring Road. This grand boulevard, built alongside the lines of the old city walls, showcases many of the capitol’s architectural masterpieces, including the Opera House, magnificent Hofburg Imperial Residence and Parliament. Then join your Local Expert for a walk through Innere Stadt, the first district and historic core of Vienna. Explore Vienna with Insight Choice. Choose between a visit to a traditional Viennese Café to enjoy local specialities of coffee and sachertorte. Alternatively, listen to the musical masterpiece of Mozart as you take to the floor in a Viennese Waltz dance lesson.

Day 8: Along the shores of Lake Wörthersee to Venice

This day’s route takes you past quiet villages, through Styria’s forested mountains and into the Carinthian Lake District. Continue past Europe’s warmest lake, the Wörthersee, to cross into Italy near Tarvisio. Then follow mountain valleys and cascading streams down to the Veneto Plain en route to the unique city of Venice. This evening is truly a special experience, starting with a private boat to arrive at your central hotel. Stroll past the entrance doors of the famous Opera House to La Fenice restaurant for a magical Celebration Dinner. Indulge in traditional Venetian dishes that are enriched with inspiration from seasonal produce. Finish in true Venetian style – savour a cocktail at Café Florian at twilight whilst being serenaded by an ensemble of talented musicians, and admire the peace of St. Mark’s Square long after the day-trippers have gone to their mainland hotels. Return to your hotel along the Grand Canal.

Day 9: The magic of La Serenissima

Wake up to one of Europe’s most romantic cities. Admire the Doge’s Palace and its adjoining Bridge of Sighs. Witness the skill of glassblowers and learn how the Venetian gondola is made on a visit to a traditional arts centre. Only minutes away by private launch is St. Mark’s Square where the city’s former wealth and power is evidenced by the riches of St. Mark’s Basilica. With the rest of the day free, why not cruise along the Venetian lagoon to the island of Burano for a meal of local specialities and wine?

Day 10: Arrivederci Venice

Bid farewell to this enchanting city with departure transfers by water taxi, arriving at Venice Marco Polo Airport at 08:00 and 09:30.

Day 1: Arrive Vienna

Tune into the enchanting musical heritage of Vienna, your launch pad to a grand adventure through the highlights of Eastern Europe. After checking in, join a ‘Local Specialist’ for a sightseeing walking tour of Old Town Vienna, revealing insights into the Habsburg dynasty, once one of the most influential royal houses of Europe. Admire the Hofburg Palace, Imperial Boulevards and the beloved St. Stephen’s Cathedral, with its colourful tiled roof. This evening, we join our Travel Director and fellow travellers for a Welcome Reception to kick off our exciting holiday.

Day 2: Vienna – Lake Bled

We cross the Loibl Pass in the Karawanken Mountains and into the lush green hills of Slovenia. Arrive later at Lake Bled, an exquisite natural retreat set against the backdrop of forests and mountains. During your free time, you could consider taking a boat trip on its crystal clear waters to admire the castle, which clings dramatically to a cliff rising up from the lake’s edge. This evening, we dine at our hotel.

Day 3: Lake Bled

Spend the day at your leisure, up the romantic atmosphere of this Alpine lake setting. Perhaps take a boat ride along the lake’s tranquil waters, or consider joining an Optional Experience to the extensive maze of underground caves at Postojna.

Day 4: Lake Bled – Ljubljana – Zagreb

We leave the emerald waters of Bled behind and arrive in the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, where we will join a ‘Local Specialist’ for a sightseeing tour to see its Opera House, Cathedral, National Museum, Three Bridges Square and Castle. We cross into Croatia and travel to its capital, Zagreb – our home for the next two nights. You’ll have a free evening to spend as you wish. Consider heading to Tkalčićeva Street to indulge in the flavours of traditional fruit brandy.

Day 5: Zagreb

Explore a tale of two hilltop settlements and Zagreb’s scenic cityscape, to this day lit by gas lamps in the Upper Town. Join a ‘Local Specialist’ who will share the landmarks of the city’s Lower and Upper Town, including the Gothic Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Opera House and St. Mark’s Church, with its exquisitely coloured roof. Spend the rest of the day on your own, paying homage to the patron saint of Zagreb at its Stone Gate, or enjoying the city views from Strossmartre.

Day 6: Zagreb – Lake Balaton – Budapest

Crossing the border into Hungary, we enjoy a photo stop on the shores of Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe and affectionately known by locals as the ‘Hungarian Sea’. We continue to the romantic capital of Budapest – our home for the next two nights. Perhaps, sail along the Danube on a scenic river cruise, enjoy an evening of Hungarian wine tasting or relax in the healing waters of the Szecheyni Spa Bath as the sun sets.

Day 7: Budapest

Today, we join a ‘Local Specialist’ for a walking tour of the Castle district to admire picture-perfect views of the Danube and Fisherman’s Bastion with its towers representing the seven Magyar tribes who formed the Hungarian nation. See the imposing Parliament and the Great Synagogue, the largest in Europe. Later we meet the Schieszl family and ‘Connect With Locals’ over a ‘Be My Guest’ dinner.

Day 8: Budapest – Slovakia – Kraków

The exquisite natural landscape of Slovakia provides a scenic backdrop for our journey to Poland, past the foothills of the Tatra Mountains. We arrive in the enchanting city of Kraków. Consider an evening of lively Polish entertainment with dinner, or perhaps visit a traditional Polish Wódka Bar.

Day 9: Kraków

A leisurely walk through the beautiful streets of Kraków this morning with our ‘Local Specialist’ will include such highlights as the Royal Castle and Cathedral on Wawel Hill, recognised as the most historically and culturally significant site in Poland. We continue through the Old Town with a visit to the Mariacki Church and view of the Cloth Hall. Spend the afternoon exploring the city on your own or consider visiting a traditional milk bar. Enjoy a slice of Polish Sernik Babci in the Old Town Square or join an Optional Experience to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, where underground chambers are hewn out of rock salt. This evening, we dine at our hotel.

Day 10: Kraków – Auschwitz – Czestochowa – Warsaw

Our journey this morning takes us to the concentration camp at Auschwitz, a poignant reminder of the horrors perpetrated during the Holocaust. Travelling to Jasna Góra Monastery, we ‘Dive Into Culture’ and rub shoulders with Catholic pilgrims, who have journeyed to the famous shrine for centuries to see the iconic Black Madonna of Częstochowa. This evening, we arrive in the elegant Polish capital of Warsaw, where we will dine tonight at our hotel.

Day 11: Warsaw

Connect with the youthful energy of Warsaw, a city that has triumphed over the tragedy of war and the shackles of communism. This morning, we join a ‘Local Specialist’ visiting the Old Town, which the Nazis destroyed to retaliate against the Warsaw Uprising. You’ll also see the site of the Warsaw Ghetto, immortalised in the Roman Polanski film – The Pianist. Spend the rest of the day exploring the sights on your own, or celebrate the talents of Chopin during a private recital of Chopin’s works.

Day 12: Warsaw – Berlin

Journey across Poland’s patchwork countryside along the Autostrada Wolnośki (Motorway of Freedom) which was first initiated by Nazi Germany to connect Berlin with Poland and left unfinished for decades after World War II. Continue west into Germany and arrive in Berlin, a capital city with an enviable youthful verve and charisma. Here you’ll enjoy an evening at leisure to explore the city your way.

Day 13: Berlin

Ascend an icon of reunification this morning as you witness spectacular panoramic views of the city from the Berlin TV Tower. Then join a ‘Local Specialist’ for a sightseeing tour through the city’s great landmarks, including the Neoclassical Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden Boulevard and the Reichstag Building, lovingly restored after it fell into disuse after World War II. Spend the afternoon people-watching on Friederichstrasse with an Fassbrause or join an Optional Experience to discover Berlin’s turbulent past.

Day 14: Berlin – Dresden – Prague

Travel through the Spreewald Forest to Dresden – its iconic domes and spires almost entirely rebuilt after the Allied Forces left their deep scars on the city during World War II. Hear about its restoration during your orientation tour as you stroll through its streets to see the Semper Opera, Zwinger Palace and fully reconstructed Frauenkirche. We leave Germany behind and travel to the Czech Republic, arriving later in glorious Prague, straddling the mighty Vltava. Spend your evening savouring hearty Czech flavours during a Regional Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 15: Prague

Explore exquisite Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque façades as you ramble through the ancient streets of Prague with your ‘Local Specialist’ who will share insights into the city’s centuries-old history. Marvel at Prague Castle, the 14th-century Charles Bridge and Old Town Square, with its Astronomical Clock and hourly Walk of the Apostles. Visit the Cathedral of St. Vitus, then enjoy the rest of the day free to explore or relax. Day 16: Prague – Tábor – Vienna

‘Dive Into Culture’ and witness the centuries-old Venetian tradition of glassmaking. Day 12: Assisi – Pompeii – Sorrento

Pass the site of the bloody World War II battle of Monte Cassino en route to the Bay of Naples and the lost city of Pompeii where you’ll join a ‘Local Specialist’ who will share the story of this remarkable ancient Roman settlement that was buried in ash following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Cross the enchanting blue water of the Bay of Naples to the Isle of Capri and ascend to Capri by funicular railway where you will join a ‘Local Specialist’ for a guided walking tour of the town. Spend a leisurely afternoon soaking up la dolce vita in the piazza before sailing back to the mainland. This evening we arrive in Rome, the Eternal City, where we will spend the next two nights.

Day 14: Rome – Vatican Experience

See the beautiful marble Duomo and Baptistery with its famous bronze doors, and the picturesque Ponte Vecchio which straddles the Arno. Learn about the quality and workmanship of one of this city’s historic industries at a demonstration of Florentine leathercraft. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure admiring the work of great masters in the Uffizi Gallery, climbing the stone steps to Piazzale Michelangelo for iconic views, or relaxing in the Boboli Gardens.

Day 16: Florence – Pisa – Monaco – French Riviera

We drive to the city of Pisa and its Square of Miracles to see the famous Leaning Tower which bears this city’s name. From Italy to the sun-kissed landscapes of the French Riviera, we stop in the sophisticated Principality of Monaco before continuing to the French Riviera, our home for the next two nights. Enjoy an orientation drive along the scenic Promenade des Anglais, which for centuries has attracted sun-worshipping aristocrats to its shores, and see Place Massena before spending the evening at leisure.

Day 17: French Riviera – St. Paul De Vence Excursion

Rub shoulders with artists and actors in the medieval hilltop town of Saint-Paul-de-Vence before enjoying an afternoon at leisure in the French Riviera to indulge in the laid-back seaside atmosphere. Wander along the scenic promenade and embrace café culture on the tranquil shores of the Mediterranean, stroll through the chic city streets shopping at the French Riviera’s fashionable boutiques or relax on the beach watching the sun set. Day 1: London – Paris

Leaving the bright city lights of London behind us, we cross the English Channel by ferry from Dover to Calais, travelling across the World War I battlefields w here so many brave souls lost their lives. We catch a glimpse of the Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge before arriving in Paris. Later, we join our Travel Director and travel companions for a Welcome Reception including dinner and drinks and an evening drive to embrace the energy of this vibrant city.

Day 25: Rhineland – Cologne – Amsterdam

Admire the tall twin Gothic spires of the Cologne Cathedral this morning, before crossing into the Netherlands and on to Amsterdam where we spend the next two nights. Sit under the leafy canopy at Leidseplein indulging in Dutch beer and kroketten, hire a bike and hit the city’s tree-lined streets or bask in the warm glow and gezelligheid of one of the city’s renowned bruin cafés.

We cross the fertile Thessaly region and see the battle site at Thermopylae, where the heroic Leonidas and brave Spartans battled against the invading Persians. We arrive at the centre of the world and Mount Parnossos, joining a ‘Local Specialist’ to explore the ancient sanctuary of Delphi and seat of the most important oracle in the ancient classical world. Wander through the centuries-old ruins of the Sacred Way to the 5th-century Temple of Apollo and marvel at the site where athletes once competed in the Pythian Games held in honour of Apollo and the Arts. We arrive in Athens this evening.

Day 19: Athens Sightseeing – At Sea

Travel to the heart of ancient Athens, back to a time of philosophers and great thinkers. Journeying north through the beautiful landscapes of Umbria and Tuscany, we arrive in the Renaissance city of Florence. Day 26: Lucerne

Day 1: Munich – Tegernsee – Zell Am See

We’ll meet with the group in Munich this morning before moving on to Tegernsee – where we’ll get acquainted with the picturesque lake on a boat trip. Our next stop will be Zell am See, which is filled with marvellous alpine scenery (and comes complete with another shimmering blue lake). Tonight, we’ll get to know each other a little better over a group dinner. Accommodation: Hotel Steinerwirt 1493.

Day 2: Zell Am See

After this morning’s breakfast, we’ll roll up our sleeves for an included cookery class – where a local expert will demonstrate how to make Austrian delicacies kaspressknödel (cheese dumplings) using fresh farm produce. When we’ve learnt the tricks of the trade, we’ll try our hand at making the delicious treats ourselves – with the chance to taste the fruits of our labour afterwards.

Day 3: Zell Am See – Berchtesgaden – Salzburg

Today we’ll head back over the border into Germany for a stop at Berchtesgaden. While we’re here, we’ll visit Hitler’s famous Eagle’s Nest, which is perched high at the top of a mountain peak overlooking the quaint Bavarian town. After wandering the very rooms where Hitler and other Nazi party officials entertained foreign diplomats and held banquets, we’ll travel back down the mountain toward our next stop: Salzburg.

Day 4: Salzburg

Today you’ll be free to experience Salzburg’s fairytale magic and explore its spectacular Baroque sights at your own pace. The birthplace of Mozart, the impressive Mirabell Palace and Gardens, Salzburg Cathedral and St Peter’s Abbey are all great places to start! This evening, we’ll come together to enjoy a group dinner and Mozart concert at the lofty Salzburg Fortress.

Day 5: Salzburg – Schafbergbahn – Schnitzhof Alm – Tauplitz

Today we’ll board an old-fashioned cogwheel train and take the SchafbergBahn up to the top of the Schafberg mountain – taking in some fantastic views of the Salzkammergut region along the way. Then, it’s on to Schnitzhof Alm – a delightful 400-year-old cottage where traditional cheeses are made. After enjoying a cheese tasting session and included lunch we’ll continue to Tauplitz.

Day 6: Tauplitz – Admont – Amstetten – Dürnstein

After a breakfast in idyllic Tauplitz our road will take us to Admont Abbey, where a guided tour awaits. Exploring landmarks is thirsty work – so it’s only fitting that our next stop in Amstetten will be a local distillery! While we’re here, we’ll gain an insight into the cider-making process, and – of course – have a chance to taste it for ourselves. Tonight we’ll dine in Dürnstein, a photogenic town famous for its vineyards.

Day 7: Dürnstein – Spitz– Tulln An Der Donau – Vienna

Our final day together will see us travelling to Spitz, a wine-growing village in Lower Austria. After that, we’ll move on to Tulln an der Donau, a historic town teeming with parks and gardens, where you’ll be free to lunch where you choose. Then: our tour will come to a close in buzzing Vienna, with its captivating blend of Baroque architecture, imperial palaces and musical masterpieces.

Guided sightseeing of Germany’s “Secret Capital” features the Olympic Stadium, built for the 1972 Olympics; the 1,000-foot-high Olympic Tower; Nymphenburg Palace; and the historical Konigsplatz, used for Nazi rallies during World War II. Drive along the Ludwigstrasse, and see the Bavarian Arch of Triumph and Field Marshall Hall, a monumental loggia on the Odeonsplatz. Continue on foot and visit lively Marienplatz with the Old and the New Town Halls and the gothic Frauenkirche. An optional excursion is available to Linderhof Castle, one of King Ludwig’s prettiest castles, and a visit to the picturesque Passion Play town of Oberammergau.

Day 3: Munich – Neuschwanstein – Innsbruck, Austria – Salzburg

Drive into the garden-like landscapes of the Bavarian Alps and visit King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein Castle, which inspired Walt Disney, and enjoy magnificent views of the Alps from high up. Cross the border into the Tyrolean mountains to Innsbruck, capital of Tyrol and host of two Winter Olympic Games. Follow your Tour Director for a pleasant walk through the quaint medieval lanes to Emperor Maximilian’s Golden Roof. Sit back and relax with Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake) as you sail along the most scenic section of the river. Arrive in Vienna, once the centre of the mighty Habsburg Empire. Day 6: Vienna

Guided sightseeing features a visit to the baroque Belvedere Palace with its famous Klimt collection; a drive along the Ringstrasse with its magnificent buildings like the the Vienna State Opera; and a stop at the Hofburg Palace, winter residence of the Austrian Imperial family. Marvel at the impressive courtyards, famous Heldenplatz, and stunning St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Time to savour Sachertorte and watch the lively crowd in one of Vienna’s famous coffee houses.
