Day 2: Ljubljana – Postojna Caves – Zadar, Croatia

Undoubtedly, one of the highlights on this tour is a visit to the Postojna Caves. Your included visit is comprised of a Train Ride and a walking tour, which will allow you to see what are possibly Europe’s most extensive and best-known caves. Then, into Croatia, travelling along the coast to Zadar. Over the centuries, Zadar was ruled by Venetians, Austro/Hungarians, by italy after WWi, and today it belongs to Croatia. Day 3: Zadar – Split – Dubrovnik

Day 4: Dubrovnik

Day 1: Arrive Zagreb

Embark on an epic discovery of the Balkans. The capital city of Zagreb is your springboard to a fascinating journey through what was once a troubled region and is today a land of diverse cultures and traditions which you will have a unique opportunity to enjoy with newfound friends. Meet your Travel Director and fellow travellers this evening for a Welcome Reception and evening orientation drive.

Day 2: Zagreb

The paved squares and steep alleyways of Zagreb are ours to explore this morning as we join a ‘Local Specialist’ to delve into the city’s rich medieval and religious history. See the majestic cathedral on Kaptol and St. Mark’s Church, with its vividly coloured tiled roof. Admire the Opera House, then take a stroll around the 17th-century Ban Jelačić Square. Spend the rest of the afternoon on your own – enjoy panoramic city views from Strossmatre, pay tribute to Zagreb’s patron saint at the Stone Gate or wander through the Old Town, twirling your Šestine umbrella as you ramble through its labyrinthine lanes. Perhaps join an Optional Experience to Kumrovec, birthplace of the iconic leader Tito and enjoy a delicious meal of regional specialities with magnificent views of the Croatian countryside.

Day 3: Zagreb – Sarajevo

We journey to Sarajevo, whose rich religious and multicultural heritage has earned it the nickname, the ‘Jerusalem of Europe’. Its centuries-old religious history is reflected in its beautiful synagogues, mosques, and Orthodox and Catholic churches. Delving into the depths below Sarajevo, we join a ‘Local Specialist’ for an insider tour of the Bosnian war tunnel which allowed food, war supplies and humanitarian aid to come into the city, and people to get out. Hear war-time tales of bravery and tragedy. This evening, join your travel companions for dinner at your hotel.

Day 4: Sarajevo

Join a ‘Local Specialist’ for a guided walking tour of the city’s Old Town, past the largest mosque in the Balkans, the Eternal Flame and the Sarajevo Roses that are dotted across the city as a stark reminder of the turmoil Sarajevo endured decades ago. During your free time this afternoon perhaps ramble along Copper Street seeking treasures, or drink from the fountain of Sebilj to secure your return to Sarajevo.

Day 5: Sarajevo – Mostar – Dubrovnik

We journey to the secluded coves and dramatic cliffs of the Dalmatian coast that for centuries have attracted famous artists, actors and aristocrats. En route to Dubrovnik, the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, we stop at the magnificent Mostar Bridge. A ‘Local Specialist’ will provide tales of this impressive bridge over the Neretva River and the bridge keepers who watched over it in medieval times – giving Mostar its name. The 16th-century bridge, built by Sinan the great Ottoman architect, was destroyed during the war and has been rebuilt using age-old traditions. Enjoy some free time to explore the town, before continuing to the ancient city of Dubrovnik. This evening, consider joining a private sunset cruise with dinner, enjoying the best views of this enchanting city from the water.

Day 6: Dubrovnik

Stroll through the limestone streets of this stunning medieval city, joining a Small Group Sightseeing walking tour of the main sights of Dubrovnik with a ‘Local Specialist’. Admire the Rector’s Palace, Onofrio’s Fountain and the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries. Consider taking an afternoon boat ride to the seaside oasis of Cavtat. This evening, we travel to Osojnik and ‘Connect With Locals’, joining the Muhoberac family for a traditional ‘Be My Guest’ dinner in the village their ancestors have lived in for over 500 years.

Day 7: Dubrovnik – Excursion to Montenegro

Dazzling natural surrounds are ours to enjoy today as we travel to the Republic of Montenegro, where we will meet a ‘Local Specialist’ and head towards the mouth of the Bay of Kotor. Celebrate centuries of history in the charming town of Kotor, with its Venetian palaces and medieval churches. We return to Dubrovnik this evening and dine tonight at our hotel.

Day 8: Dubrovnik – Split

We pass old fishing villages and modern resorts, arriving in the vibrant city of Split. Enjoy a sightseeing tour with a ‘Local Specialist’ featuring the historic inner city. ‘Dive Into Culture’ and admire the façades of Diocletian’s Palace, which today forms half of the Old Town of Split. See Split’s Renaissance and Gothic structures, Jupiter’s Temple, the Peristyle and the Cathedral. Spend the evening on your own, or join an Optional Experience to savour traditional Dalmatian flavours.

We return to Zagreb for a final Farewell Dinner together, reminiscing over an enchanting Balkan exploration.

Day 2: Zagreb – Ljubljana, Slovenia

Discover the Lower and medieval Upper Town of the capital of Croatia, with a Local Guide, and admire the Austro-Hungarian architecture such as the Parliament, Stone Gate, the Archbishop’s Palace, and more, plus a visit to the majestic Cathedral. Enter Slovenia and arrive in its capital, Ljubljana.

Day 3: Ljubljana

Guided sightseeing features the main sights like the medieval castle, the impressive City Hall, St. Nicholas’ Cathedral, and a visit to the Town Hall’s Inner Court. Balance of the day is at leisure to join the locals along the banks of the Ljubljanica River or to just relax.

Day 4: Ljubljana – Postojna – Opatija, Croatia

Enjoy A Guided Walk Through The Spectacular Postojna CAVES and ride a mini-train. The cave was discovered in the 17th century, opened to the public in 1819, and is considered the most beautiful in Slovenia. Continue to the famous seaside resort of Opatija.

Day 5: Opatija – Excursion to Pula

Take a scenic drive through the Istrian Peninsula to Pula, where your Local Guide will show you the Triumphal Arch of the Sergi, dating back to the 1st century. Then, visit the perfectly preserved Amphitheatre and the Temple Of Augustus. Return to Opatija and immerse yourself in the relaxed atmosphere of the resort. Walk along the seaside promenade and take pictures of the famous Maiden with the Seagull.

Day 6: Opatija – Plitvice – Zadar

Head to Plitvice and join your Local Guide for a walking tour of the National Park, with its lakes, waterfalls, and forests. Back to the coastline, arrive at your beautifully-located hotel, surrounded by fragrant pine woods.

Day 7: Zadar – Trogir – Split

A guided walking tour to the main square gives you a good impression of this city with its turbulent history of fighting off the Venetians, crusaders, and Turks over the centuries. The next two cities are UNESCO World Heritage Sites: explore picturesque Trogir, founded by Greek colonists and a major port until Roman times, and then continue to Split, the ancient Spalato. This evening, enjoy a delicious dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 8: Split

Walk through the labyrinth of medieval streets within the walls of Emperor Diocletian’s Palace, a well-preserved fortress and a living part of the Old Town, with your Local Guide. Also see the Mausoleum, the Cathedral of St. Domnius, and the Temple of Jupiter with its impressive basement halls-a filming location in Game of Thrones.

Day 9: Split – Bosnia – Herzegovina – Dubrovnik, Croatia

Follow the Dalmatian coast, heading south to Dubrovnik. Enjoy a walking tour with a Local Guide to see the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries, and the impressive ramparts, erected during the Crusades to protect the town against land attacks. Also visit the 15th-century Rector’s Palace, built in gothic style, with renaissance and baroque elements, harmoniously combined.

Day 1: Welcome to Zagreb

Transfers to your hotel depart from Zagreb airport at 11:30 and 14:00. Relax and settle in or perhaps head for the romantic chestnut-lined Stross Promenade for your first views over the city. At 17:30, join your Travel Director for a Welcome Dinner with the opportunity to get to know your fellow travellers over a pleasant evening with wine.

Day 2: Zagreb’s Twin Towns

Join your Local Expert to explore the two-tiered capital of Croatia. Drive through the squares of the Lower Town, Donji Grad, designed to give a sense of grandeur. See the Mimara Art Museum in Roosevelt Square and continue to Ban Josip Jelacic Square en route to the cathedral. Board the city’s funicular to the medieval Upper Town, Gornji Grad. It’s a network of little streets, stretching between the Kaptol and Gradec hills. View the former Presidential Palace, Stone Gate, St. Mark’s Church and the Lotrščak Tower. The afternoon is at leisure. Relax and enjoy your hotel’s amenities or perhaps take an Optional Experience to the Zagorje region to learn about the local traditions and visit the house of Marshall Tito?

Day 3: The Postojna Caves and on to Belle-Epoque Opatija

Venture into Slovenia to visit the world-famous Postojna Caves. Step aboard the cave train and descend into a subterranean world of stunning stalactites, stalagmites, columns and curtains. Marvel at the five-metre tall Brilliant, the cave’s most beautiful stalagmite. Return to Croatia where your hotel is in the Belle Époque seaside-resort town of Opatija, nestled at the foot of Mount Učka. Take time to stroll by the luxurious villas along the tree-lined seafront promenade.

Day 4: Discover the Jewels of Istria

Cross the heart-shaped peninsula to explore the Jewels of Istria with your Local Expert. Visit the well-preserved first-century arena at Pula, scene of brutal gladiatorial battles in Roman times. Continue to the charming old town of Rovinj, rising directly from the sea. Wander through the cobbled streets lined with tempting shops, pastel-coloured bars and sidewalk cafes.

Day 5: Pristine Plitvice National Park

Enjoy the scenery of the Adriatic coast in the morning – journey past sparkling deep blue seas, studded with rocky islands, before heading inland to visit one of Europe’s great natural wonders. Zig-zagging timber footbridges will lead you through the blue-green beauty of Plitvice Lakes National Park, a scenic wonderland of 16 interconnected lakes, flanked by waterfalls and primeval forest.

Day 6: The Dalmatian Coast to Split

The green forests of Plitvice Lakes National Park give way to pebble-dashed shores lapped by turquoise waters. Walk through the Roman Ruins and market to see the sea organ of Zadar before witnessing a dramatic change in landscape, as you travel through Mediterranean olive groves on your way to Trogir, founded by the Greeks in 3rd Century B.C. Admire the cathedral and Renaissance Čipiko Palace before continuing to the historic port of Split. In the evening, don’t miss the opportunity of dinner in a traditional konoba.

The Roman Emperor Diocletian built his palace here, and today it forms the heart of the Old Town of Split. With your Local Expert, explore the 1,700 year-old palace cellars, and learn the story of the infamous emperor. Continue through the labyrinthine streets and arcaded squares to see St. Duje’s- originally Diocletian’s Mausoleum, and the Temple of Jupiter, which today is a baptistery, as well as the Golden Gate. Continue your venture underground, to explore the cellars. Your island-hopping adventure begins here. Cross the azure waters of the Adriatic to spend two nights on Hvar, famed for being the sunniest island in the country and boasting an interior dotted with lofty mountain peaks and aromatic fields of lavender.

Enjoy a full day at leisure, as you explore the hidden coves, secluded beaches, old monasteries and villages of Hvar. Perhaps stroll around seaside Stari Grad, known for being one of Europe’s oldest towns and a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Maybe visit the local museum with its impressive collection of archeological finds dating back to Greek antiquity or enjoy fresh seafood at a local restaurant? Cruise back to the mainland and continue your journey to the island of Korčula, known for its grace, history and rich culture. In the morning, join a knowledgeable Local Expert for a walking tour of the Old Town. Marvel at spectacular views of the mainland as you stroll towards the main square of Korčula where the Cathedral of St. Marc dominates the ancient skyline. Hear about local legends and history from your Local Expert, stopping by the Town Museum, the Bishop’s Palace with its treasury collection and the Town Hall. Visit the ruins of the house where – according to local legend – Marco Polo was born. The rest of the day is at your leisure to enjoy the narrow streets, beautiful churches and magnificent palaces of this charming medieval town.

Day 11: Dubrovnik, Pearl of the Adriatic

Journey to the beautiful southern slopes of the Pelješac Peninsula. Should weather permit, cruise the tranquil waters of the bay of Mali Ston and admire the surrounding untouched natural beauty, as you enjoy a glass of traditional Croatian brandy. Stop at a shellfish farm and meet Tomislav, a local oyster farmer, to learn about the cultivation and harvest of oysters. Enjoy a delicious Sea-to-Table tasting of the fresh shellfish, accompanied with a glass of wine. Continue to the walled town of Dubrovnik, ‘paradise on Earth’ according to George Bernard Shaw. Join a walking exploration of the city, guided by a Local Expert. Get a glimpse into local life, as you explore the stone-paved streets inside the 16th century bastions of the Old Town. Make the most of a day at leisure in the Pearl of the Adriatic. Relax by the pool, shop in the markets or perhaps take the opportunity to visit Cavtat, one of the most enchanting seaside resorts in Croatia? This evening, should weather permit, you’re invited to embark on a dazzling cruise around the fabled bay of Dubrovnik. Gaze out at views of the glistening Adriatic and the mighty city walls rising straight from the cliffs before your cruise moors in the Old Town Harbour. Start your Celebration Dinner with the national favourite drink, a glass of grappa. Savour authentic flavours of local specialties washed down with locally produced wine.

Your journey draws to a close after breakfast. Departure transfers arrive at Dubrovnik airport at 05:00, 09:00 and 11:30.
