Day 1: Cagliari

Welcome to Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital. Cagliari, located on the Bay of Angels, is an ancient fortified city that has seen the rule of civilisations for over 5000 years. Transfer to your hotel and enjoy a late afternoon walking tour of the historic medieval Castello with its ancient fortifications, 14th century towers and town hall. Visit Piazza Palazzo, The Cathedral of Santa Maria, The Bastion of St Remy, Royal Palace and the bustling marina quarter with its tangled streets, bars and restaurants.

Day 2: Cagliari – Nora – Pula – Chia – Cagliari

Visit Nora, the oldest village in Sardinia, for Carthaginian and Roman archaeological ruins dating to the 8th century BC. Afterward, enjoy leisure time in Pula and at Chia’s pristine series of bays with its pale apricot sand lapped by turquoise waters.

Day 3: Cagliari – Su Naraxi di Barumini – Tharros – Orgosolo

Enjoy a guided tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Su Naraxi di Barumini. The defensive structures date to 2000BC and consist of circular towers of truncated cones built of stone. Continue to the Sinis Peninsula and the ancient settlement of Tharros before arriving at your mountainous retreat near the artistic village of Orgosolo. The town is located adjacent to the neighbouring blue zone of ‘Ogliastra’ where life longevity is famed.

Day: 4 Orgosolo – Mamoiada – Bosa – Orgosolo

Visit Orgosolo, famous for its murals depicting political struggles and international issues. Browse the murals and visit craft stores including carnival masks from the neighbouring village of Mamoiada, before enjoying a lunch and tasting at a fabulous winery. In the afternoon, visit the ancient hamlet of Bosa with its colourful hillside houses and one of Italy’s most beautiful bridges, the Ponte Vecchio of Bosa.

Day 5: Orgosolo – Alghero – Castelsardo – Costa Smeralda

Enjoy a guided tour of the medieval fortified town of Alghero. Known as ‘Little Barcelona’ for its Catalan influence, the town boasts a striking Gothic-style historic centre with the Church of St Francis and Santa Maria Cathedral. Stroll the narrow lanes, walk the old town walls and take a boat to Neptune’s Grotto. Continue to the Necropolis of Anghelu Ruju dating to 3000BC and Castelsardo, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

Day 7: Costa Smeralda – Arzachena – Bonifacio – Porto-Vecchio

Visit the archaeological sites of Arzachena, dating to 2000BC including the Nuraghe La Prisgiona, a megalithic fortress, and the Giant Tombs of Coddo Vecchiu. Afterward, transfer to the pier for your ferry ride to Corsica, a French Island basking in the Italian sun! Enjoy the afternoon to explore the fortress town of Bonifacio, one of the most spectacular towns of the Mediterranean. The citadel walls and ancient houses rise out of sheer cliffs. Visit Sartène, a medieval hilltop town with narrow alleyways surmounted by arches and vaults. The surrounding region boasts some of the best wines in Corsica. Enjoy lunch and wine tasting at a local winery before a quick stop to observe the ruins of Filitosa. Accessible through an ancient olive grove, the site features stone carvings from 3300BC. Continue to Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica and the birthplace of Napoléon Bonaparte.

Visit Lumio, Sant’Antonino, Pigna and L’Île-Rousse.

Day 13: Calvi – Saint-Florent – Saleccia – Oletta

Continue to the wild Désert des Agriates, an area of arid landscape and savage beauty. Tucked away between mountains and the sea, Saint-Florent is an elegant town of cobbled streets, pink plastered houses, cafes, boutiques and a marina’s edge lined with bars and restaurants. Here, travel by boat to discover the inaccessible beaches of Saleccia and Loto. Bearing picture-postcard scenery. Afterward, delve into the attractive countryside of Conca d’Oro to your magnificent rural retreat in Oletta.

Day 7: Amsterdam Area – Groningen – Bremerhaven, Germany

Depart Amsterdam and stop in Groningen, an important trade centre in the 13th century that today is hailed as the “World Cycling City.” In the centre of town, admire the Martini Tower with its 62-bell carillon, the Spanish Moorish synagogue, and much more. Reach Bremerhaven for a guided visit of the interactive German Emigration Centre, Europe’s largest museum about emigration, particularly German emigration to the United States.

Day 8: Bremerhaven – Bremen – Berlin

Travel to the Hanseatic city of Bremen, which majestically straddles the Weser River. Attractions here include the opulent Town Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the massive, 15th-century statue of Roland, the city’s protector; the oldest wine cellar in Germany, the Ratskeller, whose wine list boasts more than 650 German wines; and the bronze sculpture of the Bremen Town Musicians from the Grimm Brothers’ famous fairytale. You’ll see the highlights on your included guided walking tour, then it’s on to the city of Berlin!

Day 9: Berlin

On the included guided tour, learn how Berlin is no longer divided but every bit as fascinating. Once a city of stark contrasts, since the fall of the wall, Berlin has developed into a harmonious blend of old and new. It has preserved the old buildings, such as the State Opera House and Brandenburg Gate; its neoclassic-style boulevards, such as the Kurfustendamm and Unter den Linden; and it has created brand new buildings in the most daring, up-todate architectural styles. Day 10: Berlin – Dresden – Prague, Czech Republic

Travel southwest toward the Czech border to Dresden, hailed as the “Jewel Box” city for its splendid baroque and rococo centre. With four nature reserves and 63% of the city consisting of green areas and forests, Dresden is one of the greenest cities in all of Europe. On your included guided sightseeing tour, see the Zwinger Palace Glockenspiel with its bells made by the famous Meissen porcelain factory, as well as many other city highlights. Cross into the Czech Republic and head towards Prague. Your Tour Director can suggest optional excursions, including a fun evening of traditional Czech music and entertainment.

The wealth of gothic and baroque architecture in the “Golden City” of Prague inspired local composers Dvorak and Smetana. Prague will inspire you, too, during your included guided sightseeing tour. Your Tour Director can suggest optional excursions, including a fun evening of traditional Czech music and entertainment.

Day 12: Prague – Tabor – Vienna, Austria

Visit Tabor this morning, founded in 1420 as an egalitarian peasant commune. Walk through the pretty Old Town with its narrow cobblestone streets to its main square. In the afternoon, cross the Austrian border to arrive in Vienna, Austria’s capital. This evening, how about an optional classical concert?

Day 3: Amsterdam Area – Mannheim Area, Germany

Travelling through Germany, choose an included scenic drive along the shores of the Rhine or, even more thrilling, the optional Rhine cruise with vistas of the Lorelei rock, hilltop castles, half-timbered wine villages, and terraced vineyards. Spend the night in the Mannheim area.

Day 6: Venice Area – Assisi – Rome

An interesting drive southward, cutting across the Po Delta, then through the gentle Umbrian hills to medieval Assisi, where St. Francis was born in 1182. Visit the world-famous Basilica with its beautiful frescoes by Giotto, then head for Rome.

Day 7: Rome

The “Eternal City” is steeped in history, vibrantly alive and exciting, and absolutely unique! Included sightseeing with a Local Guide starts with St. Peter’s Square and Basilica. Other highlights are the iconic Colosseum, the largest amphitheater ever built and Circus Maximus.

Day 8: Rome – Florence – Montecatini

Drive on the Highway of the Sun to Florence. This Renaissance gem and city of the Medicis will keep you enthralled for a whole day. Don’t miss out on the included walking tour with a Local Guide that features most of the city highlights. You will see Piazza Santa Croce; beautiful Piazza Signoria; Palazzo Vecchio; Loggia dei Lanzi; and, to top it all, Piazza del Duomo and its cathedral with the Giotto Campanile, and the magnificently carved East Door of the Baptistry, known as the “Gate of Paradise.” Overnight in the spa town of Montecatini.

Day 9: Montecatini – Pisa – Milan – Lake Como

Day 1: Arrive London

From tragic battles to tales of triumph, this special-interest exploration of two World Wars kicks off in the vibrant British capital of London. Meet your Travel Director and fellow companions this evening for a traditional English pub Welcome Reception.

Day 2: London – Sightseeing and included Imperial War Museum Visit

Towering Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey feature on this half-day introductory sightseeing tour with a Local Specialist, which also includes views of Buckingham Palace. This afternoon, we visit the Imperial War Museum, which tells the story of those whose lives were shaped by war from World War I to today. See extensive archives and recordings, as well as a Spitfire that saw action in the Battle of Britain. Enjoy London after dark, spending your evening at leisure meandering along the Thames, riding the London Eye or watching the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London.

Day 3: London – Ferry to Caen – Bayeux

We journey south to Portsmouth and leave British shores bound for Caen by ferry this afternoon. After dinner on the ferry, transfer to your hotel in Bayeux.

Day 4: D-Day Normandy Beaches – Bayeux

We journey to the historic D-Day Normandy landing beaches and learn about British, Commonwealth and American involvement in this unbelievable battle for supremacy. Later, we see the famous Bayeux Tapestry, depicting the Norman conquest of England.

Day 5: Bayeux – Visit Memorial de Caen – Paris

Take yourself back to June 6, 1944. Imagine the terror and bravery of thousands of soldiers who landed on the beaches of Normandy to free Europe from the Nazis. This morning, we visit the Memorial de Caen to learn about the significance of Normandy and the day that changed World War II. You’ll also receive a souvenir D-Day Landing beach booklet, before travelling to Paris, the City of Lights.

Day 6: Paris Sightseeing and Free Time

Join your Local Specialist to visit Notre Dame Cathedral then delve into the lives of Parisians, wandering through the enchanting hidden squares and secret passages of one of Paris’s oldest neighbourhoods. Our walking tour concludes in one of the city’s loveliest squares which is a real favourite among the locals. Spend the rest of the day on your own to see the sights. Consider an Optional Experience to the opulent Palace of Versailles. This evening, you may wish to enjoy a traditional Parisian Cabaret.

Day 7: Paris – Somme Battlefields – Amiens

The bloody battlefields of the Somme take centre stage today. Stop at Villers-Brettoneux to visit the memorial to Australian soldiers who lost their lives in WWI. Carry on to Thiepval to see the poignant memorial which honours the 72,337 missing British and South African men who died with no graves. We journey to Amiens for an evening at leisure.

Day 8: Amiens – Vimy Ridge – Dunkirk – Fromelles – Lille

Today we visit the memorial at Vimy Ridge dedicated to the Canadian soldiers, who fought a battle here in 1917. This horrific battle, and the bravery of the men who fought in it, came to symbolise Canada’s coming of age as a nation. We then journey to Dunkirk, where Operation Dynamo miraculously saw over 330,000 Allied troops evacuated to Britain. We stop in Fromelles, where there was a combined operation between British troops and the Australian Imperial Force, described as the “worst 24 hours in Australia’s entire history”.

Day 9: Lille – Excursion to Ypres Battlefields – Passchendaele – Menin Gate

Some of the biggest battles of World War I are explored at Ypres Salient in Belgium, where we will see such sites as Tyne Cot, Langemark and Vancouver Corner. Stop in Passchendaele for an included visit to the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917, where you can see a replica trench. See Essex Farm Cemetery where over 1,200 brave servicemen are buried and where Lt. Col. John McCrea wrote his immortal poem, ‘In Flanders Fields’. Spend the rest of the day on your own, before making your way to Menin Gate to witness the moving Last Post Ceremony to pay tribute to over 100,000 soldiers who laid down their lives in war more than a century ago.

Day 10: Lille – Bruges – Amsterdam

Travel to Bruges and perhaps try the delicious local chocolate and Belgium’s famous frites – the perfect fried chip! Explore the cobblestone streets and medieval façades reflected in the still waters of the canals. Continue to Amsterdam, where we spend the next two nights.

Day 11: Amsterdam Orientation

Gabled townhouses dating back centuries and leafy canals provide a beautiful backdrop for our orientation tour. Enjoy free time afterwards to explore the city on your own. A patchwork of colours provide a beautiful backdrop for our journey through France’s rolling countryside to the Burgundy wine region. We visit the region’s capital, Beaune, renowned for its 15th-century Hôtel-Dieu, to admire its colourful geometrically patterned Burgundy tiled roof. Next, we cross the border to Geneva where we will spend the next two nights.

Explore the City of Peace today – the dramatic Alps and scenic Lake Geneva provide the perfect backdrop for an enjoyable morning of sightseeing. Join your Travel Director on an orientation of this small city to view the Reformation Monument, and see the Old Town, United Nations Building and Red Cross headquarters. Continue along the picturesque shores of Lake Geneva, arriving in the celebrated Chexbres wine region where we will ‘Connect With Locals’ at a Be My Guest lunch. Delve into Vaud traditions and generations of expert winemaking at the 15th-century vineyards of Cave Champ de Clos. Returning to Geneva, the rest of the day is at leisure. Day 5: Geneva – Grasse – Nice

The idyllic playground of southern France takes centre stage over the next two days as we journey to Nice, the jewel of the French Riviera. ‘Dive Into Culture’ and let the heady scents of French perfume infuse your senses during a visit to the Fragonard Perfumery in the village of Grasse. Here you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the art of creating beautiful fragrances.

Day 6: Nice

Soak up the sophistication of Nice, which for long has lured sun-worshipping aristocrats and tourists in search of a quiet seaside sojourn. Against the backdrop of colourful Italian and French façades, we drive along the Promenade des Anglais and see Place Massena during our orientation of the Bay of Angels. Spend the rest of the day discovering the Old Town. Consider a quiet coffee at one of the sidewalk cafés or dip your toes in the warm Mediterranean waters.

Day 7: Nice – Monaco – Pisa – Florence

Travel along the southern coastline of France, stopping at the Principality of Monaco to see the famous Prince’s Palace of Monaco, built as a Genoese fortress and home to the Grimaldi family since the 13th century. Cross the border into Italy and visit Pisa and its Square of Miracles to view the Leaning Tower and Baptistery, said to be the largest in Italy. We arrive in the Cradle of the Renaissance this evening where we will enjoy dinner at our hotel.

Day 8: Florence Sightseeing – Venice

This morning, join a Local Specialist who will reveal the story of the wealthy Medici family who influenced the art and architecture of what became one of the cultural centres of the world. You’ll visit the Piazza della Signoria with its beautiful statues and palazzi and enjoy views of the magnificent marble Duomo and Ponte Vecchio on whose arches were built the shops of successful merchants 400 years ago. Learn about the quality and workmanship of one of this city’s historic industries at a demonstration of Florentine leathercraft. Then, drive across the Veneto plain to Venice, where you’ll spend the next two nights.

Day 9: Venice

Glide through the turquoise waters of the Venetian Lagoon by private launch to Guidecca Island. ‘Dive Into Culture’ and witness the centuries-old Venetian tradition of glassblowing. See the Bridge of Sighs and the ornate Doge’s Palace before spending the afternoon at leisure exploring the city’s labyrinthine alleys and ornate bridges that span almost 200 canals. Enjoy an evening drink at a charming trattoria on the water, shop up a storm in the alleyways of Le Mercerie or consider an Optional Experience to the colourful fishing island of Burano for a delicious meal.

Day 10: Venice – Rome

Today we cross the picturesque Apennine Mountains and journey through the rolling gold and green landscape of Tuscany and past the hilltop towns of Orvieto and Orte, arriving later in Rome, the Eternal City.

Day 11: Rome

Join a Local Specialist to uncover the treasures of a city whose history spans millennia. Venture to St. Peter’s Basilica to view Michelangelo’s Pietà, hewn from the most ‘perfect’ block of Carrara marble, and travel across the Tiber River into Ancient Rome. Here you will see the Circus Maximus, which once played host to exhilarating chariot races, and view the Colosseum where brave gladiators and slaves met their fate. This evening we exchange stories about our epic journey through Europe with newfound friends and our Travel Director at a Farewell Dinner.

Day 12: Depart Rome

For now it’s a fond arrivederci to our Travel Director and travel companions at the end of a memorable holiday together.

European Sampler

As the name implies, this European Sampler tour is a sample of some of the major highlights of Europe. You’ll spend two nights in Amsterdam, Lucerne, and Paris, as well as one night each in Heidelberg and Dijon. In Amsterdam, your guided sightseeing is via a canal cruise, the only way to experience Amsterdam! In both Heidelberg and Lucerne, you’ll discover the must-see sights on a walking tour, including Heidelberg’s Old Town and Lucerne’s Bourbaki Panorama, a circular painting dating to 1881 and depicting memorable scenes from the Franco-Prussian War. And in Beaune you’ll have a Burgundy wine tasting and a visit to the impressive Hôtel Dieu. Your Paris sightseeing includes a Seine cruise, where you’ll be treated to great views of Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower.

Day 1: Arrive In Amsterdam, Holland

Welcome to Amsterdam! At 6 pm, meet your Tour Director and traveling companions for a welcome dinner at your hotel.

Day 2: Amsterdam

Meet your Local Guide and hear about the fascinating history of the 700-year-old capital during a leisurely Canal Cruise. Admire the patrician mansions and the gabled façades, the “Golden Bend,” the most prestigious part of the Herengracht and a monument to the Golden Age, the Stopera, Amsterdam’s proud concert hall, the Hermitage, a branch museum of the Hermitage Museum of St. Petersburg, and much more. Also visit a major Diamond Center. For those who wish to experience Dutch life in the countryside, an optional excursion is available to picture-book Volendam, a fishing village at the former Zuiderzee, including visits to a working windmill, a clogmaker, a cheese farm, plus dinner.

Day 3: Amsterdam – Heidelberg, Germany

Pass the Dutch region near Arnhem, best known as the locale of A Bridge Too Far, and enter Germany. Today’s highlight is a romantic Rhine Cruise. Sit back, relax and enjoy views of centuries-old castles, cozy towns, and vineyards. Continue to Heidelberg for a pleasant walk through the Old Town to the Marktplatz (market square), from where you can take pictures of the famous red-walled ruins of Heidelberg Castle, followed by dinner with beer at Kulturbrauerei Heidelberg restaurant.

Day 4: Heidelberg – Black Forest – Rhine Falls, Switzerland – Lucerne

Enter the lush valleys and pine-clad hills of the Black Forest, famous for cuckoo clocks. Be welcomed by a local woodcarver, and see samples of his work during a Woodcarving Demonstration. Then, enjoy Kaffee und Schwarzwaldkuchen (coffee and the traditional homemade Black Forest Cake). On the Swiss border, take pictures of the thundering Rhine Falls before continuing to Lucerne.

Day 5: Lucerne

During your walking tour, visit the impressive Bourbaki Panorama, Edouard Castres’ circular painting dating back to 1881, depicting scenes of the Franco-Prussian War. Also admire Thorwaldsen’s Lion Monument, dedicated to the fallen Swiss Guards who protected the Royal House of France during the French Revolution. See the ornate patrician houses lining the cobblestone streets of the walled Old Town, and cross the famous covered CHAPEL BRIDGE to the Jesuit Church. Balance of the day is at leisure to shop for Swiss watches, knives, and chocolate. You may wish to join an exciting optional excursion to Mount Pilatus, the “Guard of Lucerne.” Tonight is your chance to yodel or blow an alphorn during an optional folklore dinner party for a first-hand impression of Alpine merrymaking.

Day 6: Lucerne – Beaune, France – Dijon

Leave the Alps behind you and enter the scenic French countryside on your way to the vineyards of Burgundy. Stop in the picturesque town of Beaune, where a Wine Tasting awaits at the renowned Marché aux Vins wine cellar. Also visit the Hôtel Dieu, originally founded in 1443 as a hospital for the poor, before continuing to Dijon for your overnight stay.

Day 7: Dijon – Versailles – Paris

Enjoy views of chateaus on your way to Versailles, where a guided visit of the 17th-century Palace and Gardens has been included. This former hunting château, built by Louis XIII, was transformed into a magnificent palace by the Sun King, Louis XIV, and housed the French kings until the French Revolution. Arrive in Paris, where an optional excursion is available to try out local specialties in one of its lively restaurants, followed by a drive for a first look at the French capital.

Day 8: Paris

Discover the world capital of chic and style with a Local Guide. Admire its major sites: the Opéra, Arc de Triomphe, and Champs-Elysées. Enjoy a relaxing Seine Cruise with spectacular views of Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower. Time to further explore on your own or to join an optional excursion to the impressive Louvre Museum with the Mona Lisa. Tonight, dinner and a lively cabaret show at one of Paris’ nightclubs might just be the ticket!
