Day 2: Milan – Costiglione d’Asti – Benevello retreat

After breakfast, depart for Piedmont, Italy’s picturesque region of mountains and valleys, overrun with vineyards, castles and incredible cuisine. Our regional discovery begins with a thrilling truffle hunt with hunting dog on a family property that has been passed down through generations. Unlock the mystery and allure of the truffle and enjoy the find with a light lunch, paired with local sparkling Asti wine. Afterward, continue through Langhe, a UNESCO World Heritage listed area to check into an amazing rural retreat. Freshen up and relax before embarking on a late afternoon wine appreciation masterclass and tasting with a sommelier. Once the seat of the Savoy Empire, Piedmont is known for Barolo and Barbaresco, the wine of kings and queens made from the Nebbiolo grape, that are among the most coveted wines in the world. Day 3: Benevello retreat – Bra – Barolo – Benevello retreat

Visit a family cheese business established in Bra in the 1920’s and learn the secret of aging to reflect the tradition of the territory. In the afternoon, enjoy time to explore the town of Barolo, the namesake city for the ‘king of wines and the wine of kings’, before returning to the hotel to relax and freshen up before a magnificent 3-course dinner and pairing in Chef Damiano Nigro’s one star Michelin restaurant.

Day 4: Benevello retreat – Alba – Barbaresco – Gavi retreat

EEnjoy a guided tour of Alba, considered the capital of Langhe and formerly known as the city with a hundred towers. The town features the Romanesque Alba Cathedral, dating to the 12th century, and is home to the world-renowned Ferrero confectionery company. Afterward, enjoy time for self-discovery and independent lunch which may include the famed 3 star Michelin restaurant, Piazza Duomo. In the afternoon, venture to a Barbaresco winery for a tasting and an incredible view of the Barbaresco Cru hills, before continuing to Gavi to check into another amazing retreat. In the evening, visit the properties impressive cellar before enjoying a degustation dinner in its fantastic restaurant.

Day 6: Genoa – Milan – Lake Maggiore

Today’s included guided tour is an excellent introduction to Genoa. A maze of squares and alleys, the city grew around the port, a natural inlet, and boasts the largest medieval historical centre in Europe. Next, head north into the plains of Lombardy, and stop in Milan to marvel at its magnificent gothic Duomo. Then, continue to Baveno on Lake Maggiore.

Day 7: Lake Maggiore – Excursion to Lugano, Switzerland

Day 1: Welcome to Italy

After a warm welcome at Milan’s Malpensa Airport, transfers depart for your hotel at 09:30 and 12:30. Meet your Travel Director at 15:30 and join a Local Expert in the heart of Italy’s renowned fashion capital to see the impressive facade of the cathedral and the world famous La Scala Theatre. Linking the two is the elegant glass vaulted shopping arcade of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, lined with luxury boutiques. Mingle and get to know your fellow travellers during your Welcome Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 2: Fair Verona and Trento

Cross the fertile plains of Lombardy to fair Verona, the home of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet, with its maze of elegant squares and well-preserved Roman Arena, which is still used for Opera performances. Join a Local Expert to explore the Piazza delle Erbe or Square of Herbs, a lively market square surrounded by beautiful buildings. View the frescoed Casa Mazzanti and lofty Lamberti Tower and continue to the Piazza dei Signori, the civic and political heart of the city, graced by a statue of Dante and see the Gothic tombs of the Scala family beyond. Continue along the zig-zagging scenic route to Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy’s most exclusive ski resort and a beautiful alpine haven during summer.

Day 4: The Dolomites at Leisure

Enjoy a day at your leisure in this fashionable playground of the rich and famous, surrounded by towering cathedrals of rock. Take in the fresh mountain air as you stroll the pedestrianised Corso Italia, lined with designer stores and backed by the impressive green and white bell tower of the parish church. Why not ascend to the summit of one of the nearby peaks by cable car for magnificent panoramic views of the Dolomites?

Day 5: Through Prosecco Country to Venice

Travel down through more majestic Dolomite scenery to one of the world’s most breathtaking wine regions. Protected by the Alps to the north, and caressed by the warm breezes from the Adriatic, the vineyards around Conegliano Veneto produce Italy’s most prized sparkling wine. Stop at Carmina where meticulous viticulture and manual harvesting produce distinguished proseccos. See how production differs from its more famous French counterpart, Champagne. Be tempted with a taste of the crisp and aromatic flavours and learn how to make the perfect Bellini. Continue on to the unique and remarkable island city of Venice, Queen of the Adriatic and check into your hotel.

Day 6: The Magic of La Serenissima

Visit an arts centre on Giudecca Island to witness the age-old skill of glassblowing. Then, travel along the scenic canals, lined with ornate palaces – memories of a bygone golden. Alight by the Bridge of Sighs, named in the last century by Lord Byron. Turn the corner into St. Mark’s Square, dominated by its magnificently decorated Byzantine basilica, and overlooked by the great clock tower where bronze Moors figurines beat out the hours on a huge bell. No visit to Venice would be complete without a ride on a gondola; delight in being serenaded as you journey through the romantic canals. The rest of the day is at your leisure and there is free time to shop or perhaps cruise out into the Lagoon to try local fish and wine specialties?

Day 7: Sirmione and Como

Bid farewell to this enchanting city and continue past the university town of Padua to the peaceful shores of Lake Garda, the largest of Italy’s lakes. Near the tip of a narrow peninsula, jutting out into the lake, visit the charming resort of Sirmione, clustered around the 13th century Scaligero’s Castle. Follow the southern fringes of the Alps to reach the spectacular Italian Lake District and your hotel on the shores of Lake Como where you will enjoy views on the lake from your room. Later, you have a choice of cuisine and ambience from a hand-picked selection of local restaurants for your Dine-Around Evening.

Day 8: Como at Leisure and Lake Maggiore

Enjoy a relaxed morning in Como, the playground of Europe’s wealthiest people. Nestled in the foothills of the Alps, the lake plays host to the most glamorous social sets and is a great place to people watch. Head on to Lake Maggiore’s Baveno, noted for its narrow cobbled streets and charming 16th century square.

Day 9: Italian Lakes at Leisure

Relish a full day to relax and enjoy this popular resort and beautiful lake. Wander through the sophisticated streets of Milan joining your ‘Local Specialist’ on a tour of the city that will reveal the city’s iconic and unexpected highlights. Consider a visit to the medieval fortress of Sforza Castle to admire the magnificent artistry of da Vinci and Michelangelo, including the famous statue of the Pietà Rondanini.

Day 3: Milan – Lake Maggiore

Italy’s much-admired Lake District and Lake Maggiore, set against the backdrop of the Southern Alps, is the next stop on our northern Italy journey. We ‘Dive Into Culture’ during a visit to the Villa Taranto botanical gardens – scents of azalea, camellia and wisteria linger as we explore its lush gardens filled with rare lilies and 300 varieties of dahlias in bloom. Then it’s on to our home for the next two nights on the quiet shores of Lake Maggiore. Day 4: Lake Maggiore

Lap up gentle lakeside living during a full day spent at leisure in this picture-perfect setting. Spend the day relaxing or take an alpine train journey to see the magnificent panoramic views of the north. This evening, we cross the tranquil waters of Maggiore to secluded Isola Madre where we’ll ‘Connect With Locals’ over a ‘Be My Guest’ dinner.

Day 5: Lake Maggiore – Genoa – Viareggio

The maritime city of Genoa and birthplace of Columbus is our first stop today as we join a ‘Local Specialist’ for a guided walking tour to view the city’s majestic Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Visit Via Garibaldi, the historic centre of Genoa lined by ancient palaces, before continuing to the seaside town of Viareggio this afternoon.

Day 6: Viareggio – Full-Day Cinque Terre Excursion

Today we explore the dramatic coastal setting of UNESCO-listed Cinque Terre on an included full-day excursion. The deep blue Ligurian Sea provides a stunning backdrop for the expanse of pastel pinks, yellows and oranges that cling to the rugged seaside cliffs. We join a ‘Local Specialist’ to visit this remarkable destination.

Day 7: Viareggio – Langhirano – Parma

Today is a feast for the senses. Crossing the scenic Appenine mountains, we venture towards Parma, renowned for its famous Parma ham and cheese. ‘Dive Into Culture’ and savour the gourmet delights of this region during a visit to a working prosciutto factory near the town of Langhirano, with a brief photo stop at Torrechiara. Next we’ll learn how to make parmigiano reggiano cheese at a family run caseificio. This evening, consider an unforgettable Optional Experience featuring delicious local flavours in a historic setting.

Day 8: Parma – Milan

Delight in the gastronomic and architectural splendour of the Emilia-Romagna region during a guided tour of Parma with a ‘Local Specialist’. See the 12th-century Piazzo Duomo with its Romanesque Cathedral and Baptistery, and Garibaldi Square, home to the Palazzo del Governatore with its ornate astronomical clock. We leave the flavours of Parma behind and embark on a scenic drive back to Milan where we’ll enjoy a Farewell Dinner tonight with our travel companions and Travel Director.

Day 1:  Arrive In Milan, Italy

Day 2: Milan – Sirmione – Lake Garda

Start the day with an orientation tour of Milan, stopping to admire the famous gothicstyle Duomo. Travel east through the Po Valley, then catch your first glimpses of Lake Garda as you stop in Sirmione, the picturesque spa town on the south shore of Lake Garda. Stroll among the many shops and ice cream parlours that line the narrow cobblestone streets. Continue to your hotel on Lake Garda.

Join the included Boat Trip to Bellagio and Varenna, which occupies one of the most scenic positions in all of Italy.

Day 6: Lake Como – Lugano, Switzerland – Lake Maggiore, Italy

Depart Lake Como and cross the border into Switzerland. Head towards beautiful Lake Lugano and the stylish city that bears its name. Time to stroll along the lakeside promenade, window shop on refined Via Nassa, or sip an espresso on the Piazza Riforma. Leave Switzerland and cross back into italy, driving to Lake Maggiore.

Day 7: Lake Maggiore

Set between Piedmont, Lombardy, and Switzerland, Lake Maggiore is a paradise of crystal waters, backed by towering mountains and surrounded by lush countryside.
