Day 1: Arrive Amsterdam

What better place to start your jaunt through Holland than Amsterdam? Spend your day strolling through its pretty streets and tree-lined canals, stopping for a coffee and speculaas along the way. Join your Travel Director and fellow travellers this evening on a scenic canal cruise, including a light meal and welcome drinks, admiring the centuries-old façades.

Day 2: Amsterdam Sightseeing

Delve into the Golden Age and its extraordinary art, architecture and history, traversing the city’s inner labyrinth of canals and narrow streets, along which hundreds of sturdy Dutch bicycles rattle day and night. Enjoy a Small Group Sightseeing tour of the Rijksmuseum, featuring the works of great Dutch masters, including Rembrandt’s ‘The Night Watch’.

Day 3: Amsterdam – Aalsmeer/Keukenhof – The Hague – Delft – Rotterdam

We rise with the birds this morning, taking a trip to Aalsmeer to visit the vibrant flower auction and see the vividly hued blooms for which Holland is so famous. Alternatively, during the flowering season (end of March until mid-May), we’ll enjoy an included visit to the tulip fields of Keukenhof – the mesmerising sight of several million flowering bulbs planted across 32 hectares will leave you in absolute awe. This afternoon, we travel through The Hague to the historic town of Delft and ‘Dive Into Culture’ at the Royal Delft Pottery workshop where we’ll gain insights into the manufacturing of this delicate hand-painted blue and white porcelain. We continue to edgy Rotterdam, which was rebuilt from the ground up after being destroyed during World War II. Your orientation tour will reveal an innovative city with architectural treasures worth capturing on camera and a vibrant multicultural scene around every turn.

Day 4: Rotterdam – Arnhem – Oosterbeek

We travel north to Arnhem to see John Frost Bridge, so named to pay tribute to the commander of the British forces that held the bridge for four days with a mere 750 soldiers, during the World War II Battle of Arnhem. We stop for a visit of the Airborne Museum to learn about the Battle of Arnhem. This afternoon, we’ll also visit the Hoge Veluwe Park and the Kröller-Müller Museum, featuring the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world.

Day 5: Oosterbeek – Zwolle – Groningen

We head north to the beautiful Hanseatic city of Zwolle, where we’ll join our ‘Local Specialist’ for a walking tour through its medieval centre. Ending our day in Gronginen, we’ll ‘Connect With Locals’ joining Dignie and Gina on their farm for a hearty ‘Be My Guest dinner’ and meet-and-greet with their neighbour’s cows, just in time to see them being milked.

Day 6: Groningen – Volendam – Amsterdam

‘Dive Into Culture’ and saddle up to explore the university city of Groningen during a guided bicycle tour of its medieval centre. Ramble along the city’s ring of canals like a local, before enjoying a stunning drive through the mesmerising Frisian Lake District en route to Volendam, a former fishing port on the edge of IJsselmeer. ‘Dive Into Culture’ and learn about the craft of wooden clog making and Dutch cheese, followed by a celebratory Farewell Dinner.

Day 7: Depart Amsterdam

For now we say a fond tot ziens to Amsterdam and our newfound friends, closing the door on a memorable Dutch experience.

Day 2: Amsterdam Area

For centuries, this tiny nation of seafaring traders played a leading role in world history. it reclaimed 40% of its territory from the sea, and produces a healthy agricultural surplus in the midst of Europe’s most densely populated area-yet Holland manages to remain quaint and scenic. Your day begins with a Canal Cruise to see Amsterdam from water level. Complete the experience watching skilled craftsmen cut and polish precious stones at a Diamond Centre, and follow a Local Guide who will point out Amsterdam’s highlights on the included city tour. Enjoy time this afternoon to explore on your own or attend an optional traditional Dutch dinner.

Day 3: Amsterdam Area – Aalsmeer / Keukenhof – Delft – Rotterdam

Begin your day with a visit to the fascinating Aalsmeer Flower Auction or, when the tulips bloom, see some of the 7 million flowers planted annually at the world-famous Keukenhof-one of the world’s largest flower gardens (departures 0404-0502 and weather permitting). Continue to historic Delft to visit the famous Royal Delft Pottery Factory. See how this exquisite pottery is made, and marvel at the magnificent collection of hand-painted earthenware. Continue on to Rotterdam, the world’s busiest port, to marvel at the city’s futuristic architecture during your sightseeing with a Local Guide.

Day 4: Rotterdam – Groesbeek – Arnhem Area

Arrive in Gouda, renowned for its cheese! Stroll around the picturesque narrow streets to the medieval Market Square, see the gothic Town Hall with its red and white shutters and the Goudse Waag used for cheese weighing in the 17th-century. Then, enjoy your interactive Cheese Experience. Next, is Arnhem, site of the WWii Battle of Arnhem, where you will see John Frost Bridge, named after the commander of the British forces that held the bridge for four days. Enjoy time on your own to do some independent exploring.

Day 5: Arnhem Area – Giethoorn – Groningen

This morning, head for the quaint village of Giethoorn, built on canals but quainter than cities like Venice or Amsterdam. Spend the night in the provincial capital of Groningen.

Day 6: Groningen – Zaanse Schans – Volendam – Amsterdam Area

Explore Groningen this morning, an important trade centre in the 13th century hailed today as the “World Cycling City.” Cross over the 19-mile Barrier Dam, which is part of an incredible system of 1,200 miles of dikes, dams, and dunes built over the last 900 years to protect the part of Holland that is below sea level. Visit a Wooden Clog Workshop in Zaanse Schans. Continue to the fishing village of Volendam, then arrive back in Amsterdam and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
