Day 1: London – Paris

Bid farewell to England watching the mystical White Cliffs of Dover disappearing in the distance as you travel by ferry across to France in the company of your Travel Director and fellow travellers. Pass the tragic World War I battlefields of northern France bound for Paris, where you’ll join your Travel Director and travel companions for a Welcome Reception, including dinner and drinks, followed by an orientation drive through the dazzling ‘City of Lights’.

Day 2: Paris

Explore the iconic and unexpected sights of Paris with your ‘Local Specialist’, which will take you past the grand Champs Élysées and Arc de Triomphe, where we pay tribute to the brave men and women who fought for France. View Notre Dame Cathedral and enjoy a stroll through the Latin Quarter. Spend the rest of the afternoon on your very own journey of discovery. Stroll along the Seine admiring the work of artists who have set up their easels next to the river, shop in the Marais district or find a cosy bistro with great views of the city. This evening, consider indulging in the colourful nightlife of Paris and attend a famous cabaret show.

Day 3: Paris – Beaune – Geneva

A patchwork of colours provide a beautiful backdrop for our journey through France’s rolling countryside to the Burgundy wine region. We visit the region’s capital, Beaune, renowned for its 15th-century Hôtel-Dieu, to admire its colourful geometrically patterned Burgundy tiled roof. Next, we cross the border to Geneva where we will spend the next two nights.

Day 4: Geneva

Enjoy some free time this morning before continuing along the picturesque shores of Lake Geneva, arriving in the celebrated Chexbres wine region where we will ‘Connect With Locals’ at a ‘Be My Guest’ lunch. Delve into Vaud traditions and generations of expert winemaking at the 15th-century vineyards of Cave Champ de Clos. Upon return to Geneva, explore the ‘City of Peace’ – the dramatic Alps and scenic Lake Geneva provide the perfect backdrop for an enjoyable afternoon of sightseeing. Join your Travel Director on an orientation of this small city to view the Reformation Monument, and see the Old Town, United Nations Building and Red Cross headquarters.

Day 5: Geneva – Grasse – Nice

The idyllic playground of southern France takes centre stage over the next two days as we journey to Nice, the jewel of the French Riviera. ‘Dive Into Culture’ and let the heady scents of French perfume infuse your senses during a visit to the Fragonard Perfumery in the village of Grasse. Here you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the art of creating beautiful fragrances.

Day 6: Nice

Soak up the sophistication of Nice, which for long has lured sun-worshipping aristocrats and tourists in search of a quiet seaside sojourn. Against the backdrop of colourful Italian and French façades, we drive along the Promenade des Anglais and see Place Massena during our orientation of the Bay of Angels. Spend the rest of the day discovering the Old Town. Consider a quiet coffee at one of the sidewalk cafés or dip your toes in the warm Mediterranean waters.

Day 7: Nice – Monaco – Pisa – Florence

Travel along the southern coastline of France, stopping at the Principality of Monaco to see the famous Prince’s Palace of Monaco, built as a Genoese fortress and home to the Grimaldi family since the 13th century. Cross the border into Italy and visit Pisa and its Square of Miracles to view the Leaning Tower and Baptistery, said to be the largest in Italy. We arrive in the ‘Cradle of the Renaissance’ this evening where we will enjoy dinner at our hotel.

Day 8: Florence Sightseeing – Venice

This morning, join a ‘Local Specialist’ who will reveal the story of the wealthy Medici family who influenced the art and architecture of what became one of the cultural centres of the world. You’ll visit the Piazza della Signoria with its beautiful statues and palazzi and enjoy views of the magnificent marble Duomo and Ponte Vecchio on whose arches were built the shops of successful merchants over 670 years ago. Learn about the quality and workmanship of one of this city’s historic industries at a demonstration of Florentine leathercraft. Then, drive across the Veneto plain to Venice, where you’ll spend the next two nights.

Day 9: Venice

Glide through the turquoise waters of the Venetian Lagoon by private launch to Giudecca Island. ‘Dive Into Culture’ and witness the centuries-old Venetian tradition of glassblowing. See the Bridge of Sighs and the ornate Doge’s Palace before spending the afternoon at leisure exploring the city’s labyrinthine alleys and ornate bridges that span almost 150 canals. Enjoy an evening drink at a charming trattoria on the water, shop up a storm in the alleyways of Le Mercerie or consider an Optional Experience to the colourful fishing island of Burano for a delicious meal.

Day 10: Venice – Rome

Today we cross the picturesque Apennine Mountains and journey through the rolling gold and green landscape of Tuscany, past the hilltop towns of Orvieto and Orte, arriving later in Rome, the ‘Eternal City’.

Day 11: Rome

Join a ‘Local Specialist’ to uncover the treasures of a city whose history spans millennia. Venture to St. Peter’s Basilica to view Michelangelo’s Pietà, hewn from the most ‘perfect’ block of Carrara marble, and travel across the Tiber River into Ancient Rome. Here you will see the Circus Maximus, which once played host to exhilarating chariot races, and view the Colosseum where brave gladiators and slaves met their fate. This evening we exchange stories about our epic journey through Europe with newfound friends and our Travel Director at a Farewell Dinner.

Day 12: Depart Rome

For now it’s a fond arrivederci to your Travel Director and travel companions at the end of a memorable holiday together.

Day 1: Geneva, City of Gardens

Welcome to Switzerland! Prepare yourself for varied modes of transport, all of which showcase the majesty of the snow-capped mountains, the glaciers, sparkling lakes, flower-filled meadows and the beauty of the rich, green valleys. Transfers from Geneva airport to your hotel depart at 11:00, 13:00 and 16:00. Meet your Travel Director and travel companions at 18:00, followed by a short stroll to your Welcome Dinner hosted at Au Petit Chalet. The evening is full of Swiss delight as you enjoy the cosy, chalet-style decor while being served typical Swiss specialities including mouthwatering chocolate fondue for dessert! Day 2: Montreux, Chillon and the Matterhorn Village of Zermatt

Start your day with the highlights of Geneva, the City of Gardens, nestled at the end of the lake. See the Jet d’Eau and Floral Clock. Then relax and enjoy the enchanting scenery as we continue to the scenic town of Montreux Situated at the foot of the Alps and boasting beautiful lakeside walks, enjoy free time to explore this pretty town. Journey further around the Lake Geneva arc to the medieval Chillon Castle where a Local Expert will show you through the former home of the Counts of Savoy that was immortalised by Byron’s ‘Prisoner of Chillon.’ Continue through the Rhone Valley, where high summer temperatures support vines and other fruits. The final stage of your journey is by cogwheel train to the traffic-free Alpine resort of Zermatt. During your orientation with your Travel Director, feast your eyes on the distinctive triangular silhouette of the Matterhorn. At night, enjoy a stroll in the clean, mountain air to your chosen restaurant for your Dine-Around Evening.

Day 3: Free Time in Zermatt

Zermatt in summertime offers many leisure possibilities: try swimming or hiking or spend a whole day relaxing in the fresh alpine surrounds. Perhaps take an optional ride on Europe’s highest cable car to the snow-capped roof of the world for a magnificent panorama of the highest peaks in Switzerland, Italy and France?

Day 4: Elegant Baveno

Descend to Täsch and rejoin the coach. Follow in Napoleon’s footsteps as you ascend the Simplon Pass, taking in magnificent views over the Alps from the 2,000-metre summit. Continue along the gentle shores of Lake Maggiore. Perhaps take a delightful boat trip to see the stunning Isola Bella?

Day 5: Grison Alps to Chic St. Moritz

Head north back into the high mountain country of the Grison Alps today. Ascend the Julier Pass to arrive in the sparkling Engadine Valley with an invigorating climate characterised by clear skies and its location high in the Alps. On arrival in the cosmopolitan resort of St. Moritz, a brief orientation with your Travel Director will show you the spa quarter and the brilliantly sparkling glacial lake before there is time to explore further on your own or mingle with the jet set in the elegant boutiques. In the evening, you are treated to a delicious fondue dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 6: Scenic Train Ride, Liechtenstein and Lucerne

Start the day with a scenic train ride along part of the route of the Glacier Express, across the Grison Mountains and through unforgettable scenes of ice-capped mountains, stone-built villages and lush meadows. At Chur, reboard your coach and travel along the valley of the Upper Rhine to spend some time in Vaduz, the tiny capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein, where you explore the area around the castle. Continue to Lucerne alongside the the dramatic Walensee and Lake Zurich. On arrival see the sorrowful sculpture of the wounded lion, commemorating the brave Swiss guards who died defending King Louis XVI during the French Revolution. Your Travel Director will also show you the Jesuit Church and the Chapel Bridge.

Day 7: The Summit of Stanserhorn

Commence the day with a morning stroll along lakeside promenades or shopping for fine watches while enjoying the scenery. Then, from the town of Stans, embark on a scenic journey by funicular railway and open top cable car to the summit of the stunning Mount Stanserhorn. Explore Stanserhorn with Insight Choice. Meet a Swiss Ranger and learn about the local wildlife. Alternatively, walk through the Stanserhorn marmot park and along the Rock-Gipfelweg trail leading to the summit. Celebrate new friends and enjoy a Celebration Dinner at the foot of Mount Stanserhorn with magnificent views over Lake Lucerne at Restaurant Seeblick.

Day 8: Leave Lucerne for Zürich

In the morning, your departure transfer will arrive at Zürich airport at 08:00.

Day 1: Arrive In Zurich, Switzerland

Welcome to Zurich! At 6 pm, meet your Tour Director and travelling companions for a welcome dinner at your hotel.

Day 2: Zurich – Biel/Bienne – Neuchâtel–  Geneva

Discover Zurich’s well-preserved Old Town with its medieval guild houses during your orientation walk. Then, leave Zurich and start your Swiss adventure. You’ll quickly discover that Switzerland isn’t just home to the Alps, but also to some of the most beautiful lakes. First, stop at the foot of the Jura Mountains in the picturesque town of Biel, known as Bienne by French-speaking Swiss and famous for watch making. Explore the Historical centre and take a scenic drive to lakeside Neuchatel, dominated by the medieval cathedral and castle. Time to stroll along the beautiful lake promenade before continuing to stunning Geneva, the second-largest city in Switzerland, with its fantastic lakeside location and breathtaking panoramas of the Alps.

Day 3: Geneva

During your guided sightseeing, see the elegant buildings that house many international organisations, including the headquarters of the International Red Cross and many United Nations agencies. You will also hear about John Calvin, the French theologian who helped reform the church in Geneva in the mid-16th century. Visit Reformation Park, with its International Monument to the Reformation, and walk through the Old Town to see St. Pierre’s Cathedral. Balance of the day is at leisure to further explore this fascinating city. An optional lake cruise is available to make the most of your stay.

Day 4: Geneva – Évian-Les-Bains, France – Gruyère, Switzerland – Broc – Gruyere Area

Enter France and follow Lake Geneva along the southern shore to the famous spa town of Evian-les-Bains, a popular holiday resort renowned for its mineral water. Return to Switzerland, and cross the Rhone River, France’s largest river-originating in the Swiss Alps and, eventually flowing into the Mediterranean Sea. See the vineyards, where some of the best Swiss wines are produced, then leave this “Swiss Riviera” and continue to Gruyeres for a visit to the magnificent castle. Walk through eight centuries of architecture, history, and culture, and afterward enjoy lunch with local specialties and a traditional dessert with meringue and double creme. An extra treat is a stop in Broc for a visit to Maison Cailler chocolate factory to taste this delicious Swiss specialty. Continue to your hotel in nearby Charmey.

Day 5: Gruyère Area – Gstaad – Interlaken – Grindelwald

Leave the Gruyere area and enjoy a scenic drive to Gstaad, one of Switzerland’s most famous ski resorts. After an orientation of this international holiday destination for royalty and celebrities, continue to Interlaken. The town’s unique location, nestled between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz and surrounded by the world-famous Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau mountains, guarantees spectacular views. Later, arrive at your charming hotel in the mountain resort of Grindelwald.

Day 6: Grindelwald – Excursion to the Jungfrau

An unforgettable trip to the Alpine wonderland of ice and snow is the true highlight of a visit to Switzerland. At an amazing 11,332 feet, the Jungfraujoch is Europe’s highest railway station. Jungfrau’s 13,642-foot summit was first ascended in 1811 and, in 1912, the rack railway was opened. There are lots of things to do here: enjoy the Alpine Sensation, the Panorama 360 degree Experience, the Ice Palace, and take the elevator to the Sphinx Observatory. Also receive your Jungfrau Passport as a souvenir to take home with you. The round trip to the “Top of Europe” by Mountain Train will occupy most of the day.

Day 7: Grindelwald – Berne – Lucerne

Arrive in the stately capital of Berne. See the Bear Park, and enjoy the panoramic view of the city from the Rose Garden and the Old Town with the Clock Tower and the ornate, flower-adorned fountains. Leave the Berner Oberland and drive via Langnau in the Emmental Valley to picturesque Lucerne. Tonight is your chance to join an optional dinner excursion to a folklore party with yodeling and alphorn blowing.

Day 8: Lucerne

Follow your Tour Director for a pleasant walk and admire Thorwaldsen’s impressive Lion Monument, dedicated to the Swiss Guards who protected the Royal House of France during the French Revolution. Walk along ornate patrician houses of the walled Old Town, then cross the famous covered Chapel Bridge to the Jesuit Church, the first large baroque church built in Switzerland on the north side of the Alps. Join an optional excursion to Mount Pilatus, and tonight, a farewell dinner awaits at a local restaurant for a proper auf Wiedersehen.

Day 9: Lucerne – Zurich Airport

Morning transfer to Zurich Airport in time for homebound flights leaving no earlier than 10 am.

Day 1: Arrive In Zurich, Switzerland

Welcome to Zurich! At 6 pm, meet your Tour Director and travelling companions for a welcome dinner at your hotel.

Day 2: Zurich – Vaduz, Liechtenstein – St. Moritz, Switzerland

DisDiscover Zurich’s well-preserved Old Town with its medieval guild houses during your orientation walk, and stop at the famous Sprungli Confectionery to taste the traditional Chocolate Pralines. A scenic drive following Lake Zurich and Lake Walen into the high Alps leads you to the tiny Principality of Liechtenstein, clutched between Switzerland and Austria, with a surface of just 62 square miles. Stop in the capital, Vaduz, and take pictures of the castle, the official residence of the prince, overlooking the town. Return to Switzerland, and ascend the Rhine Valley into the mountainous Grisons, a canton where three of the country’s four languages are spoken. The 7,504-foot Julier Pass, an important Alpine road since Roman times, leads to the Engadine. This valley is considered by many as the most beautiful mountain area in the world, with deepblue lakes, airy larch forests that turn golden in the fall, mountain peaks exceeding 12,000 feet, and quaint villages with massive white stone houses in the characteristic Grisons style. This afternoon, arrive in St. Moritz, the elegant resort that hosted the two Winter Olympics.

Day 3: St. Moritz – Lake Como, Italy – Lugano, Switzerland

Take in a gradual change of scenery as you descend towards the enchanting shores of Italy’s Lake Como and on to the southern tip of Switzerland. The vegetation south of the Alps is Mediterranean: chestnut groves, vineyards, and olive and fig trees are a stark contrast to earlier today as you were within walking distance of glaciers. Afternoon arrival in the popular town of Lugano allows time for shopping under the arcades of Via Nassa or sipping an espresso on flower-festooned Piazza Riforma. To truly appreciate splendid Lake Lugano, an optional boat ride is available, followed by dinner at a traditional “grotto” restaurant.

Day 4: Lugano – Stresa, Italy – Täsch, Switzerland – Zermatt

Depart from Lake Lugano to the Italian shore of Lake Maggiore for a break in Stresa, the “Pearl of the Lake.” An optional boat ride to enchanting Isola Bella can be arranged. Continue over lofty Simplon Pass into the Swiss Valais, an area renowned for its excellent wines and great mountain resorts. To reach the most famous of them, leave the coach behind in Tasch and board a Mountain Train to climb the last few miles up to car-free Zermatt, a picturesque cluster of rustic chalets beneath the Matterhorn.

Day 5: Zermatt – Lake Geneva

This morning, you can join an optional excursion to Klein Matterhorn for spectacular views of the surrounding Alps. Later, drive through the vineyards and apricot groves of the lower Rhone Valley, and arrive at beautiful Lake Geneva.

Day 6: Lake Geneva – Berne – Lucerne

In the stately capital of Berne, your guided tour starts at the Bear Park, followed by a panoramic view of the city from the Rose Garden. Next, enjoy a walking tour through the beautifully preserved medieval Old Town. Witness the hourly parade of painted figures at the Clock Tower and take pictures of ornate, floweradorned fountains. See life in rural Switzerland and look forward to a special lunch at a traditional Swiss Working Farm. Cross the Brunig Pass that connects the Bernese Oberland to central Switzerland and arrive in picturesque Lucerne. An optional dinner excursion to a folklore party is complete with yodeling for classic Alpine merrymaking.

Day 7: Lucerne

Follow your Tour Director for a pleasant walk and admire Thorwaldsen’s impressive Lion Monument, dedicated to the Swiss Guards who protected the Royal House of France during the French Revolution. Day 1: Arrive Zurich

Welcome to the sophisticated Swiss city of Zurich – a flawless blend of fascinating heritage and modern spirit. Meet your Travel Director and fellow travellers for a Welcome Reception and orientation in this beautiful lakeside setting.

Day 2: Zurich – Berne – Lake Geneva (Montreux)

We leave the bright lights of Zurich behind and stop in Bern with its Old Town, admiring its medieval streets, ornate fountains and arcaded walkways. Journeying to Lake Geneva, we arrive in the resort town of Montreux, set against the pristine backdrop of snow-covered peaks and vineyards. After lunch, consider joining an Optional Experience to cruise Lake Geneva, including a visit to the Charlie Chaplin museum in his former estate, Manoir de Ban.

Day 3: Lake Geneva (Montreux) – Chillon – Zermatt

This morning, we visit Chillon Castle, immortalised by Lord Byron’s ‘Prisoner of Chillon’. For nearly four centuries, this water fortress was the residence of the Counts of Savoy and an important stop for traders. Our next stop is the 15th-century vineyards of Cave Champ de Clos in Chexbres, a UNESCO world heritage site where we’ll ‘Connect With Locals’ over a ‘Be My Guest’ lunch. Continue your journey to the resort town of Zermatt, set against the backdrop of the snow-capped Matterhorn.

Day 4: Zermatt Free Day

Spend the day soaking up the crisp mountain air and panoramic alpine vistas. You have a full day on your own to explore the town, or simply relax in beautiful surrounds. Consider an Optional Experience to the Klein Matterhorn for the most spectacular mountain views or explore the heritage of what was once a remote mountain village.

Day 5: Zermatt – Baveno Free Time

Departing Switzerland, we travel to the lakeside town of Baveno on Italy’s Lake Maggiore. Spend the rest of the day indulging in the laid-back lakeside atmosphere or consider joining an Optional Experience to Isola Bella, one of the lake’s Borromean islands, with its palazzo and exquisite gardens.

Day 6: Baveno – St. Moritz

We travel through the scenic Italian countryside, crossing the Swiss border into the scenic Upper Engadine Valley. We stop in the fortified town of Tirano, where we will board our train and wind our way through scenic landscapes en route to the stylish resort town of St. Moritz. This evening, enjoy dinner with your fellow travellers.

Day 7: St. Moritz – Lucerne Orientation and Free Time

Journeying through lush green landscapes, past Lake Zurich, we arrive in lakeside Lucerne. Pay tribute to the brave Swiss Guards, who lost their lives defending King Louis XVI at the Lion Monument, and cross the iconic wooden Chapel Bridge before strolling past the city’s colourful façades. Consider joining a cruise on the tranquil lake waters and then ride the world’s first CabriO cable car to the top of Mount Stanserhorn.

Day 8: Brienz and Interlaken Excursion

We travel to Interlaken at the heart of Switzerland, which lies in the shadow of the Jungfrau Mountain. Stopping in the village of Brienz en route, we’ll ‘Dive Into Culture’ and gain insights into the centuries-old tradition of wood carving for which this village is so famous. Spend some time on your own and enjoy superb views of the peaks of the Bernese Oberland. This evening, we enjoy a Farewell Dinner with our fellow travellers and Travel Director toasting the highlights of Switzerland we’ve enjoyed along the way.

Day 9: Lucerne – Depart Zurich

As our journey through the Best of Switzerland comes to an end, we bid our newfound friends a fond farewell.
