Day 1: Welcome to Wellington

After settling into your hotel, you’ll have time to explore Wellington independently. This evening, meet your Travel Director and fellow travellers for a Welcome Reception at your hotel.

This morning, join a local guide for a walking tour to discover Wellington’s vibrant culture and food scene. The afternoon is free for you to spend as you please.

Day 3: Wellington – Blenheim

Board the Interislander for a cruise across the Cook Strait, to the seaside village of Picton. Later it’s on to Blenheim for an orientation tour before heading to your accommodation. Later, visit one of the Marlborough region’s famous wineries, Hans Herzog Estate, for a tasting and 3-course Highlight Dinner.

Day 4: Blenheim Included Choice

Choose from either land or sea sightseeing experiences: indulge in a half-day winery tour, or take the Greenshell Mussel Cruise into magnificent Marlborough Sounds, where you will learn about local history of the area and visit a mussel farm.

Day 5: Blenheim – Christchurch

Travel to Kaikoura, where sperm whales can often be seen not far from shore. Travel along the Pacific Ocean coast and across the colourful Canterbury Plains to Christchurch. See how Christchurch is rebuilding after the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, and pop into the incredible Transitional Cathedral in Latimer Square, the world’s only cathedral made substantially of cardboard.

Day 6: Christchurch – Mt Cook

Enjoy some warm Kiwi hospitality at Morelea, the home of Angie and Stan Taylor, indulge in a Be My Guest barbecue lunch and hear about a lifetime spent farming in New Zealand. You’ll also get to witness Angie preparing her famous dessert pavlova. From here it’s on towards the spectacular Southern Alps and then alongside majestic Lake Pukaki, before arriving in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park to see Mt. Cook, the highest mountain in Australasia. Tonight, enjoy dinner with a breathtaking mountain view.

Day 7: Mt Cook

First up, you’ll experience the melting ice face and icebergs of eerie, magical Tasman Glacier, New Zealand’s largest, on a gently paced one-hour cruise guided by a local expert, against an awesome backdrop of New Zealand’s highest and most spectacular mountains. Later, you will have time to enjoy your surroundings back at the Hermitage. A stargazing optional experience is available after dinner.

Day 8: Mt Cook – Te Anau

Today is another scenic day, travelling over the Lindis Pass through Central Otago. Visit Cromwell, next to pristine Lake Dunstan, and taste delicious stone fruit at a local orchard, then stop at the perfectly restored gold-mining settlement of Arrowtown. The town’s beautiful tree-lined avenues and 19thcentury wooden buildings feel like a movie set. Afterwards, make your way to Te Anau, gateway to Fiordland National Park. This afternoon, you’ll have the opportunity to try jet boating down the majestic Waiau River, to the serene Lake Manapouri, stepping into ancient beech forests and learning all about this unique location.

Day 9: Te Anau – Queenstown

Leaving Te Anau, you will take the scenic journey through the forests, flats and meadows of Fiordland National Park and out to Milford Sound. You will stop at Mirror Lakes where the stunning mountain scenery is perfectly reflected in the waters, then on to rough-hewn Homer Tunnel, and after, to one of the world’s most dramatic alpine drives, down through the Cleddau Valley and its impressive Chasm. Then it’s on to cruise the waters of the unmissable Milford Sound. Your cruise will take in the Bowen and Stirling Falls plummeting from glacial hanging valleys sharply into the sea, and sheer Mitre Peak, rising from the fiord’s depths. Finally, you will travel on to the adventure capital, Queenstown. An orientation tour around Lake Wakatipu takes you into the city before arriving at your hotel.

This afternoon, we continue to the urban eco-sanctuary of Zealandia, admiring the extraordinary efforts of conservationists who have reintroduced 18 species of native wildlife that were absent from mainland New Zealand for over a century.

Day 7: Wellington – Queenstown

It’s time to prime yourselves for a few days of adventure, flying to Queenstown, New Zealand’s adventure-capital. On arrival, journey to the goldrush village of Arrowtown. Enjoy a tour of Queenstown, and gaze at the natural splendour in its midst – from the peaks of the Remarkables to beautiful Lake Wakatipu.

Day 9: Queenstown at Leisure

Explore exciting Queenstown your way! You could enjoy a guided walk through a native beech forest or embark on a minibus tour through the scenic gorge of Skippers Canyon. For a more sedate encounter with the adrenalin capital, visit one of the nearby wineries on a wine tour. Your Journey Director will assist you in booking all of your chosen optional experiences. As your final day ends enjoy a Celebration Dinner at one of the local restaurants with your Journey Director and new-found friends.

Day 10: Farewell from Queenstown

Day 2: Christchurch – TranzAlpine – Franz Josef

It’s all aboard the TranzAlpine train. Rated as one of the world’s great scenic railway journeys, you’ll travel in comfort across the Canterbury Plains through the Southern Alps. From Arthur’s Pass, visit the small town of Hokitika, the heritage and cultural centre of the West Coast, and meet a local greenstone (jade) carver for a jewellery demonstration. Later we continue to Franz Josef. Your eco-friendly accommodation is set amid native bush, with an emphasis on relaxation and rejuvenation. This evening, why not enjoy Franz Josef’s local geothermal hot pools or perhaps a massage.

After a relaxed start we explore this area, where a local guide explains the history behind the mighty Franz Josef Glacier. Later, you may want to get up close and personal with the glaciers on an optional helicopter flight. Your flight will hover over the snow face and may land high up in the valley so that you can walk across the ice fall – subject to weather conditions.

Day 4: Franz Josef – Queenstown

This morning it’s time for an adventure as we travel in a purpose-built fully enclosed river jet boat and journey down the Haast River. After a lunch stop at Makarora we head to Queenstown, taking time to stop to explore the historic gold-mining village of Arrowtown on the Arrow River. The adventure-capital awaits you for your extended 3 night stay, and you’ll have the opportunity to explore it during an orientation tour when you arrive.

Make the most of your extended stay in Queenstown. Why not sit back and enjoy a peaceful cruise across Lake Wakatipu aboard New Zealand’s oldest steamship, the TSS Earnslaw, to Walter Peak Station. Day 7: Queenstown – Te Anau – Milford Sound

Travel south along the shores of Lake Wakatipu to Te Anau on the shores of the South Island’s largest lake. Later you’ll travel through the rainforest of World Heritage Fiordland National Park, sighting glaciers and mountain ranges before driving through the hand-hewn Homer Tunnel to the amazing Mirror Lake. Afterwards, walk to see the Chasm on your way into Milford Sound. Tonight, stay at the magical Milford Sound Lodge, with views of the Cleddau Valley.

Day 8: Milford Sound

Wake up to the breathtaking beauty of Milford Sound. Learn more about breathtaking Fiordland National Park with an informative talk by a local expert. Later, board the Southern Discoveries vessel for a half day exploration of Milford Sound, often called the ‘eighth natural wonder of the world’. Sail out to the Tasman Sea, looking for wildlife along the way, for a visit to the Underwater Observatory and the opportunity to go sea kayaking in Harrison Cove.

Day 9: Milford Sound – Gore – Dunedin

We leave the majestic Fiordland National Park for the fertile sheep-dotted pastures of South Otago. Travel through Te Anau known for its beautiful lake and on to the country musical town of Gore at lunchtime, before arriving in Dunedin, New Zealand’s southernmost city. Enjoy dinner tonight at Parcels Restaurant at your hotel.

Day 8: Queenstown – Franz Josef

Your destination today is the wild west coast of the South Island. Stop to visit the goldmining settlement of Arrowtown, where more than 70 original buildings from the gold-rush era are faithfully preserved. Sample luscious stone fruit in Cromwell and enjoy the serenity of the region’s vivid blue lakes, the most famous of which is tranquil Lake Wanaka. Drive over spectacular Haast Pass, passing the 96-metre Thunder Creek Falls and stopping for a leisurely rainforest walk on your way to the extraordinary Franz Josef Glacier.

Day 9: Franz Josef – Punakaiki
