Holy Altai Inspiring Trail

On this adventure of a lifetime we explore the mountainous regions of Western Mongolia. Enjoy breathtaking scenery, discover ancient archeological sites, walk on a glacier and mix with the locals. Climb to the top of Malchin Mountain which rises to 4051m above sea level, then to ancient rock art gallery’s, a UNESCO World heritage site with thousands of petroglyphs spanning the past 8 to 10,000 years. Also learn the unique traditions of ancient Golden Eagle training for hunting.

Day 1: Ulaanbaatar

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia then transfer to your hotel. After a refreshment break, start a sightseeing tour to visit Central Square of Ulaanbaatar and the National Museum. Enjoy a traditional art performance and Welcome dinner.

Day 2: Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

In the morning transfer to the airport for a 2 hour flight to Ulgii town, the center of Bayan-Ulgii, the westernmost province of Mongolia. Here meet with your driver and local service team before heading towards Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, today travelling for approx. 100kms

Day 3: Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

This morning continue our drive to Altai Tavan Bogd for another 140kms. On the way we see ancient deer stone statues and archaeological burial sites. After reaching our camping spot nearby to Tuvan ethnic nomads, enjoy a short hike to a neighboring “mountain”. This evening meet with your local assistants who move the entire luggage, camping equipment and food provisions ready for transporting by pack camels, rented from the local people. No vehicle will be supporting our trip for the next seven days.

Day 4: Altai Tavan Bogd National Park – Potanin’s Glacier

After a hearty breakfast, we trek to the Tavan Bogd Holy Mountains. Enjoy extraordinary views of the Mongolian highest mountains and glaciers while trekking about 4-5hours for 16kms of moderate walk through slightly sloping passes. We reach the base camp spot on the edge of the Potaniin glacier (altitude app. 3100m above sea level).

Day 5: Altai Tavan Bogd National Park – Potanin’s Glacier

Today we climb up to the peak of Malchin Mountain, that rises to 4051m above sea level, the lowest peak of Tavan Bogd Mountains. This mountain lies along the borderline of Mongolia and Russia and offers a spectacular view over the Potanin glacier and the snow peaked summits of Altai Mountain Range. Trek back to the base camp.

Day 6: Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain

Trekking for 18kms along the Tsagaan River through stunning valley we reach the Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain, sacred to local people and boasts many herds of wild goats (ibex). Then visit a Tuvan nomad family. Altitude app. 2500m above sea level.

Day 7: Khar Salaa Valley

Trekking today for 20kms along the mountain valley of Khar Salaa. Most interestingly explore deer statues and thousands of petroglyphs spanning the past 8 to 10,000 years, holding the secrets of ancient civilizations of nomadic people. On the way you will also enjoy beautiful small lakes, home to many different species of water birds. Altitude approx. 2450m above sea level.

Day 8: Bear Valley

Trekking to mountain pass Takhilt about 7-8kms. Crossing over the pass will require quite a lot of effort when it is covered with snow. Continue the trek for about 10kms through a beautiful valley called Baavgait (Bear). Altitude app. 3300m above sea level.

Day 9: Small Lakes

Trek for 16-18kms to your next camping spot where you will take in fabulous views of the lakes. Altitude app. 2200m above sea level.

Day 10: Khoton Lake

On the last day of our trek we cover about 25kms, reaching to the most beautiful Lake Khoton. Enjoy a miraculous view of the reflection of surrounding snow peaked mountains in the lake. Here you will be registered at the Border military base of Aral Tolgoi. Altitude app. 2200m above sea level.

Day 11: Khoton Lake

Today we will explore another cultural site with hundreds of petroglyphs. Visit to a Kazakh nomad family to learn more about their lifestyle and unique tradition of Golden Eagle training for hunting. In the afternoon we rest at the campsite while enjoying the breathtaking scenery, you will have an opportunity to learn how to make Mongolian dish and playing traditional game.

Day 12: Ulgii Town

Morning we will say goodbye to our local mountain guide, camp assistants and pack camels. Continue on travel by car to drive about 230kms to Ulgii town.

Day 13: Ulaanbaatar

Transfer to local airport for the flight to Ulaanbaatar. On transfer to your hotel. Time for shopping for souvenirs and cashmere before your Farewell Dinner.

Day 14: Depart Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast at leisure until transfer to airport for your departure flight.
