Day 1: Kota Kinabalu – Mount Kinabalu

Your guide will collect you from your hotel or downtown Kota Kinabalu and drive the 2-2.5 hours up to Kinabalu park. You will be required to give the leader your travel insurance details and next of kin contact details (insurance policy number, name of insurer, 24 emergency number, and next of kin contact details) please make sure you have checked the kit requirements as once we leave Kota Kinabalu it will be difficult to find any missing items. Upon arrival at the Kinabalu Park your leader will help assist with checking in to your accommodation (if ready), provide a safety briefing about the climb and help with any last minute questions. (Please note usual check in time is 2.00pm so if we are unable to check in as soon as we arrive you can store your bags at reception until your room is ready.) They will also provide you with your trekking permit and show you to your meeting point for the following morning to start your climb with your guide. Kinabalu park was designated as one of the first national parks in Malaysia back in 1964. Its recognized as one of the most important biological sites in the world due to its rich variety of flora and fauna with more than 4500 species. Later your guide will take you on a guided walk along some of the lower trails around the park and visit the Botanical gardens.

Day 3: Mount Kinabalu

After breakfast you will be met by your climbing guide at reception. Please ensure you have stowed your large luggage at the storage and have packed your overnight bag for the climb. To start the climb we will take a short minibus ride to the start of the trail at Timpohon gate from where we commence our climb. The first 4 Kilometres are quite moderate we will be mainly climbing steps of varying sizes. There are rest huts along the way every Kilometre or so and plenty of toilets. There is no rush what so ever so take your time and enjoy the magnificent temperate rainforest. Our destination is Laban Rata where we will be overnighting for the night. At 3273 Meters on a clear day you can enjoy a beautiful sunset from here. After dinner it’s time to settle in for the night as you will be up early to start your summit climb.

Hotel: Laban Rata Guesthouse

Day 3: Mount Kinabalu – Kota Kinabalu

We rise around 2.00am in order to catch the sunrise on the summit. Its not an easy walk but you will feel a huge sense of achievement. Depending on your fitness the walk will take between 2-4 hours. Even if you are very fit you will start to feel the altitude and become short of breath. The first part is through scrub and vegetation on steps dug into the mountain side. You will then need to ascend a series of wooden steps to the final check point at Sayat Sayat. You will need to reach Sayat Sayat by 6.00am to continue to the summit. Make sure you have your climbing permit with you. After this you will need to follow a white rope all the way to the summit. The last part of the trek is a scramble over large boulders to reach the summit at 4095 M. We follow the same trail down over granite towards Laban Rata. After a well earned breakfast we hit the trail and start our descent. It is often difficult on your knee’s so take your time. We should arrive back at Kinabalu park mid afternoon where you can get a simple lunch from the Balsam cafe. Before saying goodbye your guide will arrange your transfer back to Kota Kinabalu. Your trip ends at a downtown hotel or the airport. Depending on how fast you walk down we estimate you will arrive back at Kota Kinabalu between 5.00pm-6.00pm.
