On your 13 Day Southern Madagascar Tour, discover a variety of highland landscapes, National Parks, lemurs and ethnic groups. All the population are extremely welcoming. At first, cross the road N7, to meet the locals in villages, in the fields and while hiking in Ranomafana. Head southwards to see lemurs in the reserve of Anja and the landscapes of the National Park of Isalo, ending with a relaxing stay at the edge of a lagoon, in Vezo Country.

Day 1: Arrive Antananarivo

Arrival in Antananarivo your guide will welcome you at the airport before transferring to your hotel. Depending on the arrival time, relax for a few hours before walking towards the town to discover the old town around the Queen’s Palace with our guide.

Day 2: Antananarivo – Antsirabe

This morning meet with our guide then enjoy breakfast in the hotel before heading south, passing through Antananarivo. Rice fields and typical villages of the Highlands represent the landscape directly after Antananarivo. Stop in Ambatolampy to discover the rather amazing work of aluminum for the making of cooking pots which are distributed throughout the country. Have lunch in town then continue towards Antsirabe in the afternoon. Enjoy a city tour and experience “pousse-pousse” (rickshaw) riding for those who want to try; it is the main transport for locals.

Day 3: Walking in the Highlands

Why the Highlands? Simply because it has the emblematic scenery of Madagascar, a unique landscape composed of different hills with crest lines, villages on the slope, houses made of bricks and thatch roof, colorful valley with rice fields: green, ochre, red and beige. These magnificent hikes take us to the countryside world with authentic colors, meeting local people who enjoy discussions with their visitors. See women carrying buckets of water on their heads as in Africa, farmers working in their rice fields and sometimes you will meet blacksmiths working the same process for ages. The walk is organized by a local association, a partnership with young guides from the area so to contribute partly to the development of the region.

Day 4: Antsirabe – Ranomafana

We stay on road N7 and progress towards the south. Shop around in Ambositra and visit Zafimaniry artisans workshop, look for carved wood or a piece of marquetery box made with care. Stroll around in town before continueing to Ranomafana. Now in the heart of Betsileo tribe area and are at the highest point of Madagascar Highlands and the road is more and more winding. Turn off to the east and arrive in the rainforest in the late afternoon.

Day 5: Ranomafana – Fianarantsoa

We arrive at Ranomafana National Park office after our morning drive. This is one of the most beautiful sites of the primary forest and rain forest that Madagascar can offer. Walk into the park with a local guide, a very humid environment. Find many species of lemurs including the Golden bamboo lemur (Hapalemur aureus), the red-fronted brown lemur (Eulemur fulvus), red-bellied lemur (Eulemur rubriventer) and also meet some rare and endangered species such as the Greater bamboo lemur (Hapalemur simus). In botanical terms, the park is the a genetic reservoir of some rare and endemic plant species, but also many medicinal plants. Drive back to the main road N7 after to reach Fianarantsoa town.

Day 6: Fianarantsoa – Tsaranoro

We take a short break at Ambalavao to see the hand-made Antemoro paper workshop. Arab people introduced this variety of mulberry bark-based paper to Madagascar in the fifteenth century and it is still made the same way at this little workshop at Ambalavao. Visit the small Anja reserve and meeting with the lemurs Catta. Take an off road track which is difficult sometimes but the landscape is beautiful, drive to Tsaranoro Valley, ending the route with a 2 km walk is recommended. Facing this huge mountain mass, and its granitic crests hide the horizon.

Day 7: Discovery of Tsaranoro Valley

Just amazing! From your hotel, stroll in the forest close to the foothills. Huge granite domes make these mountains with narrow valleys, an amazing spot, especially at sunrise and sunset. Your guide will lead you through the forest to meet ring-tailed lemur, he will explain also about local beliefs. If you want more sportive hikes, we invite you to climb onto the “chameleon”, a small mountain not far from the hotel, or walk around the Tsaranoro cliff by the south. These are hikes which do not present any technical difficulties and offer magnificent views.

Day 8: Tsaranoro – Ranohira

Departure for Ranohira after breakfast and today we are heading southwards for the wide open spaces. After breakfast in the hotel we drive back on the same track to reach the main road, pass by the South gates to Ihosy town before passing through the Ihorombe plateau and from one mountain to another. The Isalo is in front of us, the day comes to its end and the sunset should be great!

Day 9: Isalo National Park

A short drive to join the Isalo National Park foothills. We start the walk quietly with a small rucksack, through impressive landscape, canyons, natural pool and magic rock erosions.
Isalo is a continental sandstone plateau dating from Jurassic era. There are many rock formations with different shapes here. The nature has adapted to a dry climate. This park has a different ecosystem, endemic rupicolous flora such as Aloe, Euphorbia, Pachypodium and Kalanchoe. We picnic in the Tapia forest. Some walks are possible around or going up to summits gives us splendid views.

Day 10: Ranohira – Ifaty

Today progress to the South West towards the Mozambique Channel, Driving 245 km from Ranohira to Tuléar via a variety of botanical settings in the morning. We stop on the way to se e Mahafaly tribe typical tombs which are nicely painted and decorated, on which are erected some amazing wooden sculptures. The sea can be seen far away before we reach Tuléar. Visit of the Arboretum Antsokay, an interesting botanic garden where we enjoy lunch on the terrace. A road along the coast leads us to Ifaty. Installation to the hotel, almost feet in the water.

Day 11 & 12: Ifaty

Free at leisure to discover Ifaty on your own

Day 13: Ifaty – Tulear – Antananarivo

Morning at leisure after breakfast at the hotel. Depending on flight schedules, transfer to the airport for your flight from Tulear to Antananarivo. In the evening, transfer to the airport for your international flight.
