Day 1: Arrive Entebbe

On arrival, transfer to your stylish new boutique hotel nestled in the leafy suburbs.

Day 2: Entebbe – Kibale National Park

Much of today is spent on the road to Kibale National Park in the far west of the country (approx 6 hours). Set against the backdrop of Lake Kyaninga and the mystical Rwenzori Mountains, Kibale has one of the highest diversities and concentration of primates of any park in Africa. It is home to a large number of endangered chimpanzees, as well as the red colobus monkey and the rare L’Hoest’s monkey. Arrive at elegant Kyaninga Lodge, where the great Rift Valley meets the might Congo basin. Set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Kyaninga and the Rwenzori Mountains, there are just nine spacious cottages on stilts made from hand-carved logs. A terrace leads down to a swimming pool overlooking the lake.

Day 3: Kibale National Park

Kibale is one of Africa’s premier destinations for chimpanzee tracking. Today you head out with your tracker in search of these engaging creatures. The forest is also home to over 300 species of birds, with six endemic to the park, and other mammals including leopard, rare forest elephants, buffalo, giant forest hog and half a dozen species of antelope.

Day 4: Kibale National Park – Queen Elizabeth National Park

Drive south (4 hours) to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The game density here is high and it supports some of the largest herds of elephant in Uganda. There is prolific plains game and a good number of predators.

Hotel: Ishasha Wilderness Camp, 2 nights

Day 5: Queen Elizabeth National Park

At Ishasha, game drives through the park by day and night are included. Resident wildlife includes Spotted hyena, leopard, hippo, elephant, buffalo, waterbuck and a population of tree climbing lions.

Day 6: Queen Elizabeth National Park – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

This morning continue south to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Arrive at your luxurious Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, with eight private comfortable, canvas tents situated uniquely inside the national park, meaning you are only minutes away from the start of your gorilla tracking adventure.

Days 7 & 8: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is home to many primates including colobus monkeys and chimpanzees, but is most notable for its population of the critically endangered mountain gorilla. Spend the next two days trekking through the forest to locate one of the habituated gorilla families. The walk is demanding, up and down steep forested slopes and through thick jungle vegetation, however sighting the gorillas in the undergrowth is an inspiring moment! Spend time observing the family as they interact with each other, play and forage.

Day 9: Bwindi – Depart Entebbe

Transfer to the airstrip for your flight to Entebbe and onward connections..

Gorilla Trekking – Gorilla Mountain View Lodge

The Gorilla Mountain View Lodge is a friendly and simple lodge located approximately 10 minutes from the park offices, at the base of Sabyinyo Volcano in Rwanda, with exceptional views. The 25 individual spacious stone and thatched cottages are comfortable with en-suite shower, sitting area and a fire place. The lodge is set in well maintained gardens, the main area houses a bar and restaurant serving buffet style home cooked food and local entertainment is offered in the evenings.

Day 1: Gorilla Country

On arrival at Kigali Airport you will be met and driven the short distance to Gisozi Genocide Memorial. Visit the moving and emotional memorial of the one million people killed in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. After lunch drive to Gorilla Mountain View Lodge in Parc National Des Volcans, a journey of approximately three hours. This friendly and simple lodge is located approximately 10 minutes from the park offices, at the base of Sabyinyo Volcano, with exceptional views. After spending an hour with the gorillas return to Gorilla Mountain View Lodge. After lunch return to Kigali where you will overnight.

Day 3: Bwindi National Park

Today set off on your Uganda gorilla tracking adventure in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Forest Reserve – home to half of the world’s total mountain gorilla population. While trekking through the dense forest you’ll have the opportunity to view the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Looking deep into the expressive brown eyes of the Gentle Giants of the park surely is the most exciting and poignant wildlife encounter that Africa has to offer. After this captivating and unforgettable experience, you will head back to your lodge.

GORILLA TRACKING: Gorilla trekking in Uganda can be strenuous. The journey, through dense foliage and up steep climbs, is abundantly rewarded with the once in a lifetime experience of viewing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. You will have an opportunity to be within metres of these magnificent Uganda gorillas, sharing in their daily lives and experiencing their day-to-day activities. Mountain gorillas are extremely rare with only an estimated 850 remaining in the wild and gorilla trekking in Uganda is an experience you won’t easily forget!

Day 4: Bwindi National Park

Today you will have the option to do a forest walk, community walk or a second trek with pre-purchased permits.

Day 5: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Today you drive to the southern Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park – Uganda’s oldest park. On arrival enjoy an afternoon game drive, hoping to spot tree climbing lion, plus a myriad of other species in this beautiful park.

On arrival at Kigali Airport you will be met and driven the short distance to Gisozi Genocide Memorial. Visit the moving and emotional memorial of the one million people killed in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

Afterwards you will be transferred by road to your lodge, perched high on a ridge with stunning views of the Virunga Volcanoes and the twin lakes Bulera and Ruhonda. This is a road journey of approximately three hours over rolling hills on a comfortable paved road. Relax and take in the beautiful mountain views.

Gorillas of Rwanda

On your 5 Day Gorillas of Rwanda Tour track and observe, at close quarters, a family of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas is simply unforgettable. The mountains and volcanoes of Rwanda’s Parc National des Volcans, world famous for the work conducted there by Dian Fossey, are home to some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas and you’ll have two days tracking included in the programme. Tracking is conducted in small groups of no more than eight and a good level of general fitness is recommended.

Day 1: Arrive Kigali

Arrive into the Rwandan capital, where you are met and transferred to your hotel.

Day 2: Kigali – Volcanoes National Park

This morning enjoy a short Kigali City tour. See the craft centre, the Kandt House Museum of Natural History and the memorial for victims of the genocide of 1994, a moving experience. Make a short stop for refreshments and a briefing before driving to your new luxury lodge in the Parc National des Volcans, positioned in an eroded volcanic cone with extraordinary views of surrounding peaks and forest.

Day 3: Volcanoes National Park

The park protects the Rwandan side of the Virunga volcanoes, a range of six extinct and three live volcanoes which shelter some of the last remaining mountain gorillas in the world. This park gained world notoriety for the work Dian Fossey conducted here. After an early breakfast, drive to the Volcanoes National Park Headquarters where you are allocated a gorilla tracking group. After a briefing by your gorilla tracker/guide, the adventure begins. Today’s hike may take anything from one to five hours to reach the gorillas depending on the location of the family. You’ll walk through farmland, bamboo forests and rainforest. Upon sighting the gorillas, stay with them for a magical hour as they go about their daily habits, feeding, foraging, playing, resting and attending the young. Afterwards, return to base where your driver awaits. Lunch is back at the lodge and this afternoon enjoy a scenic drive to view the twin lakes, Ruhondo and Burera, with the spectacular backdrop of the Virunga Volcanoes.

Day 4: Volcanoes National Park – Kigali

Today is another opportunity to head into the park in search of the mountain gorillas. You will most likely be allocated a different group, the terrain may vary but the experience will certainly be unforgettable. After lunch, return to Kigali and later enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
